DESTRUCTION/RESURRECTION

PROLOGUE

Stop all the clocks…
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever:
I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;

Stop All The Clocks
W. H. Auden

Death ends a life, but not a relationship—the survivor struggles on toward resolution that it never finds. She could not accept that, if she did then there needs be a second death.

A relationship can be put to death without ending a life—the survivor struggles on toward resolution that it never finds. He knew if he accepted that then life must end also.

Their paths that had crossed in casual friendship were soon to collide head on in a fight for survival.

CHAPTER ONE
Urs bounded up the steps two at a time. The tour, while professionally satisfying beyond their wildest dreams had left Il Divo physically spent. It had taken its toll emotionally as well. Performing for the fans was an indescribable high but being away from family, friends and lovers with no sense of normalcy had left them feeling drained. Seb and Urs were heading to Paris, Carlos to Madrid and David to London. They had not even waited for morning to rush to the airport.

He was home a day early. That would not be his only surprise for Laura. The engagement ring in his pocket would soon be on her finger. He was not given to hasty decisions. They had been together for two years and he felt the relationship that had developed slowly was forever. He loved her and wanted to spend his life with her—have children with her. The decision had been made with logic as well as his heart.

He let himself into the apartment and called to her but there was no answer. He heard muffled sounds as he went toward the bedroom—she must have the television on. Having opened the door and stepped inside, he froze. The scene was branded into his mind. Her back was to him but she was naked and leaning over someone on the bed. Whether the sound of the door opening or some noise he made attracted her attention, she looked over her shoulder and saw him. Surprise registered first in her eyes, then she narrowed them and turned toward him. Glancing back toward her partner she said, “Sorry, Karl, we seem to have company.”

Karl, his friend of many years, started to speak but Laura held out her hand to quiet him. She stood and turned to Urs, her nakedness obscene. She walked close to him and began her verbal destruction. The face he had found so beautiful was now twisted and ugly as hate suffused her countenance and venom spewed from the lips he had often devoured in passion or brushed in tenderness. Her presence invaded his space with such force he was pushed backward. Caught completely off-guard, he had no time in which to mount a defense to the onslaught.

Words, words, words, they rain down in torrents, present in the speaking and then when they are gone, leave a gaping hole where a heart used to be.

Her barrage of words beat staccato in his brain. As the attack continued he crossed his arms in front of his face trying to ward off blows that could not be deflected; the voice pierces or circumvents barriers. It screams past them to lacerate and tear at the mind, at the heart, at the soul. It lays waste and leaves no more than a battered shell where once was a living, breathing man. Her scorched earth warfare left nothing alive of feeling, love, or trust.

Reeling, he stumbled out of the door and staggered down the flight of stairs to the street. He ran blindly until his lungs burned and his legs refused to continue the punishing pace. Without having considered a destination he beat on a familiar door. When it opened he fell to his knees inside then collapsed onto the floor.

CHAPTER TWO

Overcoming his momentary shock, Sebastien knelt beside Urs and lifted his upper body. Cradling him, he began checking for injuries as he spoke with great urgency, “Are you injured? Are you wounded? What has happened? I will call a doctor!”

“No doctor!” Sebastien fell back as Urs sat up and spoke vehemently. “No doctor.” He said quietly.

“What has happened to you?” Seb was more frightened by this quiet spoken, devoid of emotion, voice than he had been by the harsh one. He was frightened by the look of his friend—a look that was as empty as the voice.

“Do not tell anyone I am here. Promise!” Urs’ eyes bore into his. Seb nodded, stunned into agreement by the appearance of his friend. Urs lay down on the couch, facing its back. His body shook with violent chills. Sebastien walked over, removed his shoes and covered him with a blanket. He wondered if he should call David and Carlos but decided it best to honor his promise, at least until he knew something to tell the others. Whatever had happened to Urs had been a terrible thing.

Seb had known there was some sort of emergency when the frantic pounding had started at his door. The sight of Urs stumbling inside then falling to the floor had terrified him. Having ascertained that his friend was not wounded in any physical sense was a great relief. That relief had been short lived when he had realized the mental anguish his comrade was experiencing. His body was not injured but his mind had sustained horrible wounds. Wherever this battle had been fought, Urs was not the victor. Intuitively, Seb knew he must not mention Laura. This was the only thing that could have brought such complete devastation to this man who had more self-control than anyone he knew.

The man on the couch awoke, but Seb’s friend was gone. He did not communicate. He kept to himself or slept during the day. In the evening he went out but would return early smelling of alcohol and his mood darker than before.

Seb watched his friend deteriorate before his eyes. When he tried to talk to Urs, he was told that if David, Carlos or anyone tried to see him, he would simply disappear—perhaps forever. Seb only told the others that Urs was visiting and spending a lot of time resting; the tour had taken its toll on all of them. David and Carlos were concerned, but something in Seb’s voice convinced them to leave things to his care. They knew he would call if he needed them.

Urs was killing himself. He did not eat. Restful sleep eluded him. He returned from his evening expeditions with despairing eyes until he finally gave up going out. Somewhere, in the edge of reason, he tried to understand why he was stripped of control, the ability to think logically, to deal with the situation. He only knew that he was tired, a tiredness that seeped into his bones, robbing him of strength and will. And the vortex that held the voice of a woman he had loved, a woman who was the instrument of his destruction sucked him into its spiral and down into an abyss from which he could not escape and he was filled with loathing for his weakness.

Seb knew he had to do something and if he chose the wrong path, his friend would die. It was not that Urs was feeling sorry for himself. That would not have been within his nature. This was something he could not understand—what could have been so terrible that Urs could not cope.

A chance meeting provided an avenue. He had stopped at a small coffee shop for a drink when he noticed a familiar figure at one of the tables. He paid for the coffee, walked to the table and said, “Hello, Madeleine.”

CHAPTER THREE

She looked up and smiled, “Seb, how good to see you. Do you have time to sit?” They had met several times over the past two years. Madeleine was a regular participant on the Forum and then had started attending their promotional appearances. She had been to number of their concerts on the tour, even traveling abroad. As a free-lance writer, she wrote pieces about the places she traveled for the concerts and glowing articles about the concerts and Il Divo. Her articles had appeared in newspapers and magazines in several countries. Over time, there had been opportunities to chat and she and Urs had become friends. They knew she had faced tragedies in her life, the most recent being an automobile accident that had left her in need of several surgeries and physical therapy. The men had sent wishes for her recovery and a huge bouquet of flowers.

“And are you well, Maddie?” Seb smiled, calling her by her Forum identity.

“I will be. I have finished my physical therapy treatments and the doctor tells me they have been completely successful. The only problem is that they have left me so tired and I haven’t regained muscle strength. I’ve taken a cottage in the country in England and plan to spend time there recuperating. You are a dear to ask.” Madeleine smiled at the young man of whom she had become quite fond.

“So what are you doing in Paris?” He was concerned because she was thinner than he remembered and she looked quite pale.

“Just a quick trip over, actually. I met with the editor of a magazine who is quite interested in having me do articles on a semi-regular basis. I think it may actually work out quite nicely for me. I’m headed home today—well, not home—to the cottage”

A seed had been planted and bore fruit. “Maddie, take Urs with you.” She gave him a startled look as he hurried to explain. Not that he knew much to explain; only that something devastating had happened to Urs a month ago and it was killing him—literally. He was sure that it had to do with Laura but when he had mentioned her name, Urs had begun to tremble violently, rushed from the flat and did not return for hours.

He had tried to reach Laura but she had proved elusive and did not return his calls. When he had stopped by their flat, no trace was left that she had ever been in residence there. The apartment had been left in sterile order—a stark contrast to the chaos left in the mind of its other occupant.

“Oh Seb, what on earth could it be?” Alarm showed on her face. Seb quickly made the decision not to tell her specific details of Urs’ stay with him.

Surely, she thought, it wasn’t as desperate as Seb indicated.
********

When she looked at Urs, she realized that it was much worse.

He acknowledged her greeting but there was no warmth in his voice. He was gaunt and unkempt. The beautiful Urs she knew was not this bereft, scarecrow standing before her. Seb hurried to explain the chance meeting, as Urs appeared ready to bolt. Finally he sat but seemed poised, ready for flight.

“Urs,” Madeleine began, “I desperately need your help. I have finished my therapy and am going to the country to recuperate but my doctor has said I must not go alone.” A small lie, but it was obvious that drastic measures were needed. “I was at a loss for someone to accompany me but then fortunately I saw Seb and he said you might be available for a short while.” She let every emotion she could think might sway him play on her face. Wistful, vulnerable, needy, pitiful! He sat immobile and impassive. “Urs, I hate to impose but I really need help.” Perhaps the idea that he could help someone would appeal to him—anything to reach him.

She touched his arm and he jumped as though hot coals had been placed there. He turned his eyes to her—there was nothing in their depths. Slowly he gave a slight affirmative nod. Seb quickly packed a small bag for him. Neither Seb nor Madeleine had thought it would be that easy. It was a further indication of the loss of will and direction in a man who had been so sure of himself and kept his life in such precise order. An Urs without precision, without purpose was unimaginable and frightening. Neither could fathom what could have brought him to this state of despair.

He was quiet on the trip on the Eurostar. Madeleine had taken care of all the arrangements and he followed her quietly. The only indication that he was doing more than moving by rote was when he reached for her bag and slung it over his shoulder. She smiled and thanked him but was given only a barely perceptible nod. When they picked up her car from the car park he moved directly to the passenger side after stowing their bags.

As she drove through the countryside he either slept or gazed out the window in stony silence. Madeleine drove the winding roads with care but scarcely noticed the scenery of the beautiful West Country she and her husband had loved, had even considered for their retirement. Then he was gone; there would be no years to share and grow old together. She had wandered through lonely days into lonelier night. If love were a choice, why would anyone choose such exquisite pain? How could anyone not? It had to be worth the risk!

No thinking about that now. “Someday you will find your light again, don’t you know, don’t let go—be strong!” Urs’ solo line; it had become her mantra. She had held on, now she wanted to claim that promise for herself and for this unique and precious man with her.

And so they came to the cottage at the edge of Dartmoor; the shadow of a man to do battle for his existence, and the woman who had survived hell and needed strength for life.

CHAPTER FOUR

The cottage sat at the edge of Dartmoor; away from the area frequented by tourists to the area. Once a mighty tin-producing area it had never been heavily populated. Now farmhouses were long since abandoned with only an occasional one having been restored as rental property for visitors. Madeleine and her husband had located this one on one of their jaunts to the area.

The cottage was small but comfortable. There was a cozy sitting room and a small kitchen. A bathroom had been added for each of the two bedrooms by building a small addition on one end of the structure. This had been done with such skill by local craftsmen that it was not apparent that the add-on had been completed later than the original building.

Exposed granite hilltops, known as tors dotted the plateau. There were numerous tall standing stones, menhirs, visible from the cottage windows. There was beauty in the wildness and starkness of the area.

The days quickly formed a pattern. He was often up early and gone before she awoke. The first morning she had panicked and dressed quickly to set out to look for him. Cresting a small hill, she saw him on the moor far below. Sitting on an outcropping, she watched as he wandered without purpose, the wind whipping his hair around his face. The solitary longstone seemed a grim symbol for the man who walked through its shadow. There was a nip in the air and clouds scudded overhead.

Curious sheep wandered by, some with red, some with blue swatches on their fleece. This was the manner of identification in the area. A small herd of the famous ponies were grazing in the distance. Having ascertained his location, she went back to the cottage.

He returned mid-afternoon. He went through the motions of small tasks outside the cottage. There was not much to be done except carry in wood for the fire.

She had prepared a tea tray with simple but inviting food to tempt him to eat. He drank the steaming tea but only nibbled at a small sandwich. She had no better luck with the items she left in the larder for him to have should he regain a desire for food. There was always a delicious smell in the cottage at dinnertime and he sat at table but most often just pushed bits of food around his plate with, “I’m sorry, Madeleine, I’m just not hungry tonight.” Nor the next, nor the next. She smiled and did not press the issue—all in good time!

After dinner they would sit before the crackling fire, Madeleine reading or working on her writing and Urs staring into the flame. She had learned that if she talked he would give only perfunctory replies then excuse himself and go to his room. Sustaining a conversation would have taken too much effort and listening to someone else talk only served to remind him of the last words hurled at him; arrows into his heart. Bits of that scene would flash into his mind and send his senses reeling once more, plunging him further into the depths of despair. Healing had not yet begun because the extent of his wounds had not been acknowledged. When he allowed full knowledge into his being, then healing could begin—if the process had not killed him.

He tossed and turned through sleepless nights and in morning light, his demons followed him from the bed. Sometimes they trailed in stalking packs as he walked for miles across the moors. At other times they danced with fiendish glee in circles around him. They were in the wasteland that was his mind, his heart, his soul. No vestige of his existence could be found. There was no truth beyond the vast void filled with torment by night and emptiness and doubt by day.

So their days wound down the path into weeks. Madeleine often followed him out but did not invade the solitude he sought. She sat quietly surveying the wild countryside. The moors had to be one of the most compelling landscapes on earth, the colors more vivid, the elements more extreme. In her solitude, she began to find solace, which had eluded her for so long. Her own demons did not follow so closely now and she could hold them at bay for hours at a stretch.

He began to take notice of Madeleine when she was unaware. She was an anchor in this storm. Knowing someone cared this much for him struck a chord somewhere deep within. He had come to realize that she had not needed a companion; he did not take offence that it was a ploy to get him here. He had seen her great sorrow and her progress in facing it. The great irony was that two years before her devastating accident, a similar one had taken the life of her husband. In both cases, drunken drivers had crashed into them head-on. She had survived—Ian had not. Her loss was final—so was Urs’ though not through death. They were kindred spirits. He was not yet ready to share any part of his experience and he was grateful that she recognized that and did not force a confrontation.

He knew that she sat and watched him on many of his aimless hikes. Both of them were beginning to look healthier due to spending the days in the sun and fresh air. His appetite picked up a bit but he was still painfully thin. Her concern remained deep, but she could sense a change in him that gave her hope for his recovery. It was though she had been holding her breath waiting for some signal that he would survive.

Scenes from the night he had fled his apartment no longer swam in bits and pieces in his mind but had come together into a reality that he could begin to deal with. Alone on the moor he roared his rage and pain to the heavens. He lay on the tufted grass and shed cleansing tears. He lifted his face and felt the warmth of the sun. He had faced the demons and survived. He could now enter the battle for his sanity and life.
********

He sat on the front step watching the sunrise. He heard the door open quietly; she sat beside him in the stillness. In the quiet, her presence was reassuring, not intrusive. He clasped his hands between his knees and his head was lowered.

“She was going to leave me but then I became a Divo. She no longer wanted me but she wanted to be with a celebrity. But then she hated that I had become that celebrity. She said she never loved me! It was all pretense. How could I have been so stupid?” Unable to continue, he sprang up and began his daily trek.
*********************

Laura snapped her mobile shut. Sebastien again—no chance she was answering that. She thought that whole thing would have blown over by now. Urs was a struggling singer when they had met. She immediately loved him madly. He was more cautious but their relationship had grown. She had loved him, she truly had but it was not in her nature or upbringing to be able to sustain a relationship. Though not an actress by trade, she was accomplished in the art. With him gone so much of the time it had been rather easy to keep up the charade without him becoming suspicious. She had thought to let him down rather gently but then the Divo phenomenon had exploded into their lives. Avarice had replaced love and she saw her ticket to the lifestyle she wanted. And besides, it didn’t have to be forever—divorce from a wealthy man could be quite lucrative.

And then, in an interview, he had made the comment about love being enough and marriage not necessary to him. She had already taken a lover but still held onto the hope that she could convince Urs to marry her. Then he came home early.

When she had seen him standing in the bedroom doorway, she knew it was over. Her dreams for herself were shattered—why should he be able to just walk away? She had given him two years of her time and what was she going to have to show for it? With words as her weapons, she destroyed love and trust. She held every nuance of their relationship up to ridicule. She stripped bare their tender, most private moments. She derided his character and his manhood. She pushed every button on the control panel until on overload then her laughter followed him as he plunged into the night. She hadn’t heard from him again—well, no surprise there. But Seb kept calling—she was curious but not enough to risk his questions or possible berating. Shrugging her shoulders, she voiced the comment she used to conclude most situations, “Oh well…….”

CHAPTER FIVE

Madeleine sat and watched the morning complete its arrival in rosy color. Finally there was a chink in the armor! She knew she must only be patient and he would eventually reveal all that had happened. There was obviously more than just Laura not loving him.

But she could wait. She had waited. She had felt that there would never be room for another in her heart after her beloved husband, but unawares, this young man had brought light into the center of her world. She could never let him know exactly what he did mean to her. She didn’t know when love had crept in so silently. It wasn’t logical. It wasn’t practical. It wasn’t possible. But there it was. It was not for acting upon. It was enough just to love him and now to be there for him.

When she went into the kitchen she was glad to see that he had made tea and taken some biscuits from the cupboard. At least he had not left having had nothing to eat.

When he returned in the afternoon he gave her a smile, the first she had seen since their arrival. It was a very small smile, but it was a beginning!

Sitting before the fire that evening he began the conversation where he had left off that morning. “She had been having an affair with Karl for over a year. She said I disgusted her, that to even make love with me she had to pretend it was Karl she was with. She said I wasn’t much of a man and less of a lover.” His voice was very quiet and recounting those words brought new torment to his eyes.

Madeleine could only imagine the actual taunts that had been thrown so unexpectedly at the physically exhausted man who thought he was returning to the arms of his beloved but instead found a harridan who stripped him of love and dignity.

The demons danced in the firelight. “She said it was all she could do not to cringe when I touched her. I never satisfied her—it was always an act.” The emotions playing across his face gave evidence of details his words had omitted.

Madeleine took a deep breath. Her words must be few and exactly right. “She must have felt terribly inadequate within herself and very angry with herself to feel the need to say such things to you. It was her lack of worth, not yours.” She watched his face carefully.

Her words had the effect she had hoped. It registered that it might not be all truth Laura had flung at him. He might not be the nothing she had painted him, had driven home with her flurry of vile accusations. Her fury had been so quick and so complete it had not left room for questioning. His body was tired. His mind had been so inundated it had not been open to reason.

“Maybe.” Simple acquiescence. He rose slowly, still thinking, “Good-night.” He was gone but hope lingered behind him.

Madeleine had kept her face serene, but she seethed inside. She wanted to kill the woman—literally. She wanted to do it personally and painfully—place her hands around her throat and squeeze until those eyes which had crucified him were dulled and the light of life gone out of them. She knew what hatred was. She had met Laura only once and had found her cloying sweetness did not ring true. Laura had put on a front of congeniality but Madeleine felt she had kept a distance, knowing the other woman was not taken in by her façade. But Urs had loved her—knowing that, Madeleine had hoped she was wrong about the woman—hoped she would give Urs the happiness he deserved—the life Madeleine wished for him. But her worst fears had come true—and beyond. The flames in her eyes rivaled those at the hearth.

She took a deep breath. Let Laura live—that would be punishment in itself. To treat another person the way she had treated Urs would eventually be repaid.

She had one more thought; how could anyone not value Urs?
“Good night, sweet one,” she whispered into the empty room.

CHAPTER SIX

When he emerged from his room in the morning, he had showered, shaved and pulled his clean hair neatly back. His face was still all pointy angles and his clothing hung loosely but there was light in his eyes and the drawn look he had worn for so long had vanished. He seemed eager for the steaming tea and eggs and toast she placed before him.

Having finished his meal, he did not seem eager to leave the table. She sat opposite him, comfortable in the quiet knowledge that he would once again continue sharing his story when he was ready.

“She said Il Divo was a fluke—we were a passing fancy—not really any talent there, especially me. She had laughed behind my back when I sang for her.” He paused, a look of bewilderment on his face. “She left me nothing, Maddie. Why? Was that necessary? Did she hate me that much? Why? How could I have been so blind about her?” His last question was cried out in self-accusation, bewilderment and pain.

“It is never easy to understand why one human being will do such a thing to another. She was obviously quite an actress. It may be better to just acknowledge that evil exists and not try to understand its reason because perhaps there is none. Can you accept that you fell in love with a persona she presented and reject the need to understand the why of it all? It is very likely that she could not explain with any sanity what her motives were.”
She spoke quietly, but her heart had begun racing when he had used the diminutive of her name. She allowed herself one moment then willed the unbidden thoughts into submission.

He had to get past asking why. If he did not there could be no end to it because that was the one question she felt certain would never be answered.

He reached over and patted her hand, “Maddie, I know that you didn’t really need someone to come with you. I know this was all for my benefit. Thank you.” He stood and went outside.

“That’s where you’re wrong, my dear. I did need someone with me. I needed you.” Again she had spoken to an empty room.

CHAPTER SEVEN

Today he walked with purpose. The ramblings in his mind began to sort themselves into manageable compartments. It was though he was sorting things into folders, stamping them “closed,” and filing them away. There did not need to be explanations or recriminations—just closure.

Laura was the past—closed. And Karl—his best friend…. Remembering now things Laura had said about him and how she had sometimes behaved around him left Urs relatively certain that Karl, too, had fallen prey to her calculated seduction. He wondered if his former friend had yet discovered what she really was. That deserved no further thought—the file labeled “Karl” was stamped closed with only momentary sadness for the friendship betrayed and lost.

Laura was a sham that he had tried but failed to bring into reality. The music was reality. The two years of whirlwind career were reality. His family was reality. His Divo brothers were reality. And now, Madeleine was reality.

There was one glaring and tormenting area that he was not ready to invade. He could not bring it to focus in his mind—it was still too devastating. He did not yet have the skills with which to face that lurking dragon. Yet, until he did, he would never be whole. If he tried to think of it, his mind would be prickled and poked and the fire would scorch his progress until he gave up for the time being. It remained from the dark days while staying with Seb—those evening forays. Better to leave that for another time. His mind pushed it away.

He sat for a while—truly resting—seeing for the first time the beauty around him. He did not realize how much time had passed but suddenly he was aware that it was late in the afternoon—he had been gone all day. Maddie would be worried.

Maddie. How lucky to have such an intuitive friend in his time of dire need. How lucky to know a woman of such caring and compassion. How lucky just to have Maddie in his life. She had endured so much and had come through a stronger person. She had married very young, had children almost immediately, and now, at only ten years his senior, was a widow with children who were young adults. It occurred to him that he admired and cared deeply about this woman. She was lovely and strong and witty and talented and giving. He mustn’t give her more cause for worry by being out any later.

He rose and walked in the direction from which he had come. He glanced with concern at the quickly setting sun. He sensed the need to hurry but he had waited too long. Dusk fell and with it came a peril of which he had only heard stories.

The mists had rolled across the moors so quickly he had not had time to reach the cottage before he was enveloped in a world of white. He stood quietly trying to get his bearings but knew he could be pointed in any direction. Staying here in the open was not an option. The mists would quickly saturate his clothing and with the temperature dropping, he could die of exposure. He moved slowly; he could not afford to go falling down some tor.

He had walked for what had seemed a long time without reassurance of being any nearer the cottage. Skeletal trees would loom through the mist but he saw nothing familiar to reassure him of his direction. He knew he could not afford to panic, but real desperation was beginning to set in.

Stopping, he listened intently in the eerie stillness. He thought he heard something. Sounding as though it were at a great distance, he heard his name called.

Maddie. He would be safe with Maddie. He walked toward that voice that promised safety. No, now it seemed to come from another direction. He stood still, closed his eyes and tried to fix on the direction of the voice, but it was faint, far away and simply hung in the mist, giving no hint of its source.

"Don't give up on me, Maddie," he whispered

CHAPTER EIGHT

He had been gone all day but she felt as though he was mentally in a much better place than he had been at any time since they had arrived. She hoped it had been a day of progress. Her own progress in coming to grips with the fact that her husband was gone and she was left to carry on had been a small victory. Her body had healed and she was gaining strength daily. She would settle for that much right now. She smiled as she thought of her children—out on their own now, but still her greatest comfort.

She was concerned as the sun sank lower and he had not returned. As dusk set in, the mists rolled quickly across the moor as they were wont to do. Fear seized her; he would never be able to find his way back! Trying to hunt for him would be foolhardy; they would both be lost. The temperature would drop dangerously low; he could not survive the night in the open and there would be no shelter.

She walked a few feet from the cottage, making sure to keep it in sight. Landmarks could disappear with only a few steps taken. She began to call his name. She wanted to scream it into the white blanket but knew she must not become hoarse or unable to call out. The tone must be right, the volume steady if he was to have any chance of following the sound.

She called his name—"Urs"—it was a beacon. "Urs"—it was a prayer. "Urs"—it was a lifeline.

After what seemed hours she was sure she heard a faint reply. She kept calling, her voice filled with hope, faith—love. His replies were coming closer—no—he had made a wrong turn! Her heart stopped. Oh, God, please don’t take him from me too. She kept calling—the replies came closer again.

He was very close now—the curtain parted and he stumbled through the dampness. Hurriedly she clutched his arm and drew him to safety.

CHAPTER NINE

They stood just inside the door, clasped together and shaking, whether from cold or emotion they could not tell. Both were soaked to the skin. “We have to get into dry clothes,” she turned him in the direction of his room then went to her own. She peeled off the sodden garments, pulled on a fleece robe and cinched it around her. Its soft warmth was comforting yet she was still chilled.

Returning to the living room, she glanced toward his door and was dismayed to find it open and Urs standing in the middle of the room still in his wet clothing. He remained immobile, head bowed, his hair curling in wet tendrils around his face and his arms hanging limply at his sides. Uttering a small cry she moved toward him. He gave no recognition of her presence as she stood before him. Worried that he might be going into shock she knew she must act quickly.

She started to unbutton his jacket but he grasped her hands. Startled, she looked at him and said softy, “We’ve got to get out of these wet things and get warm.” She returned to her task with the buttons but he caught her arm. He looked deeply into her eyes and found his soul reflected there. She looked into his and saw a hunger long denied. Pulling her to him, he bent his head and tasted her lips, tasted the tears that had begun to fall down her cheeks, tasted his own tears that mingled with them. He was a man starving.
“Maddie…”
“Yes.” It was not a question. It was the answer to the one she had not allowed him time to finish.

He began kissing her again, ravaging her mouth, kissing the hollow of her neck. There was urgency in his mouth, his hands, and his body, which moved against her.

With cold numbed fingers she began again with his buttons and helped pull the jacket from him. He slid his hands inside her robe, fingers spread across her back to clasp her to him. Reaching down, she untied the belt and he slid the garment from her shoulders. Released, it fell to the floor. He paused only once to look into her eyes again, needing reassurance of her agreement. She pulled him back, reluctant to give up his lips and exploring hands even momentarily. Her naked body pressed to his wet clothing, she shivered.

With hands at her waist, he held her from him again and looked at her. She stood still as his hands and eyes caressed her then arched against him as his mouth moved on her skin sending ripples of desire through her.

Breaking contact, he pulled his shirt over his head. She ran her hands up his chest then around his neck to pull his lips to hers, hesitant to forego the taste of him for even an instant. Her hands slid downward where she maneuvered the button and zipper on her quest. Placing her palms on his muscular abdomen, she slid her fingers downward. There was a sharp intake of breath and with a groan, he stepped back and divested himself of his remaining clothing.

He lifted her onto the bed and pulled the quilts over them before covering her with the full length of his frame. Bodies that had been unable to warm themselves gave comforting warmth to each other as the fire mounted within them. The feel of the other’s skin touching every inch of their own sent electricity coursing through nerves.

Pent up feelings, which had begun to invade the edges of his consciousness had been held at bay too long. They had built to a frenzy that could no longer be denied. She was moving beneath him with a fervor that matched his own; lifting her body to meet his, searching for him, her urgency driving him past reason.

He could not kiss her deeply enough. He could not move his hands over her enough. Only when their bodies joined was it enough and then there was a momentary stillness. She was his dwelling place and he was home. They lay quietly savoring this complete touching, marveling at the perfection of it, reveling in the sensation of it. She made a small shift beneath him and they began a voyage of wonder and discovery.

They made love with a mutual need and hunger. Taking what was offered and giving in return. There was passion and tenderness; greed and selflessness; longing and satisfaction. Urgency brought quick completion, but as they lay clasping each other close, desire built into a night of slow ecstasy. Each time she clung to him shuddering, the sensation was as though it was the very first time. Their only words were the other’s name, breathed, entreated, sighed, whispered, implored, adored. Others would have been superfluous.

Entwined, they spiraled downward into warm waters, baptized in a sea of healing, then rose to the surface, reborn together. Rebirth—restoration—resurrection. Hours later, in the darkness they lay spent, satiated, at peace. They slept holding each other closely; even in slumber fingers were laced or caressed hair, shoulder, thigh. Breaths mingled; lips touched. They had willed the improbable into reality. They slept the sleep of the innocent, the unharmed.

CHAPTER TEN

As morning crept through the window, Madeleine opened her eyes slowly. Her head rested on his shoulder, one arm cradled her and the other was draped over her. Her right hand was pressed against his chest and her left tangled in his hair. She lay quietly breathing in the smell of him, watching his deep breathing in untormented sleep, soothed by the touch of skin on skin. She marveled in the essence of him. She was awed by the gift of him. Her skin tingled at every point of contact with his. A feeling of overwhelming tenderness caused her eyes to fill. The unity of the night lingered in this moment. She willed time to stand still—it does not.

Making very small movements she left his embrace, his bed, the warmth of his body, and stepped into the new day. The sun turned the dew into diamonds as she sat wrapped in a blanket on the front step to view her world. Yesterday’s frightening landscape was today’s new promise. Presently she went inside, dressed, brewed tea and began to prepare breakfast. He would be ravenous when he woke.

Her long journey had ended at this place. The years of dark existence and scarcely numbed pain were finished. She had found strength to survive the dark days but had not been whole since the loss of her husband, her soul-mate. Her children had been her reason for living but there had been a void deep within that none could fill. Il Divo and their music had been a godsend. She had felt the need for more than survival once more. There must be more for her. She had never imagined that the road would lead here. She knew that he too had climbed from the abyss. As the phoenix rises from the ashes, he would rise with renewed faith and trust; they had given life to each other. What privilege to give and receive such gifts.

Now they must deal with each other. She took a deep breath and with a resolute look in her eyes, continued her tasks.

CHAPTER ELEVEN

He walked into the kitchen, the ease and natural grace once again present in his gait. Only a small glint of uncertainty shone in his eyes. He came to the table as she set a mug of tea and indicated he should sit. Placing a cup for herself at the place opposite, she sat and looked directly into his eyes.

“I think,” Madeleine began, “that this will go more smoothly if I speak first.” He gave her a quizzical look, but nodded consent. “Last night was a gift offered, received, reciprocated.” She took a deep breath. “Forgive me if the right phrasing is difficult to find.” Both smiled; he took her hands in his. She was such a prolific writer it was strange to think of her not having exactly the right words at the fingertips of her mind. “Last night was not wrong—in fact it was very right. It was a man and a woman sharing love for that moment. It was human beings giving reassurance and comfort. It was friends sharing compassion. It was a need for healing. It was the continuance and deepening of a friendship that will continue forever.

It was not the beginning of a romantic relationship. I know it is never to be repeated but neither is it to be hidden in a dark corner as though it doesn’t exist. It is what it is and no more. It was magic I could only have dreamed.” She paused to take a breath.

“Are you going to give me a chance to speak at all?” His eyes twinkled as he teased her. “I owe you my life, Maddie. In every sense of the word. Making love with you was amazing; … it restored my confidence.” He lowered his head and did not meet her eyes. His voice was very quiet. “I had not told you that I had become impotent. To be told I was inadequate in bed after all of the other things that had been said, she made me believe it. Foolishly, I thought I needed to prove that untrue so when I was staying with Seb, I would meet someone in a bar and try going somewhere to be with her—I wanted to wipe the thoughts of Laura from my mind—prove that I could be a lover. Night after night I failed to….to…” That was the last of it—the final terror and humiliation he had faced. He had shared everything with her. She had released him from the doubt and shame.

“Well, you had no credibility problem last night!” She smiled and was sure she detected a grin in return. “Just to prove something—it’s not in your nature—for you there must be feeling, caring. And you are a most amazing lover, passionate, tender—skillful! I won’t lie; I would give anything to be ten years younger.” She squeezed his hands, lowered her head to look into his downcast eyes and held his gaze until he returned it.

He lifted his head, and looked at her with a playful smile, “If you were ten years younger, you would have killed me last night, Maddie!” They laughed together.

“It was pretty phenomenal, wasn’t it?” Madeleine even blushed a bit. “Now, it’s time I feed you. I know I’m starving. Why don’t you shower while I get this all heated and served up?”

This conversation was finished; its moment had passed. They would be forever joined in its memory. There were no more secrets between them; nothing to be borne alone; neither would ever be alone again.
*******

He returned minutes later and ate with relish the food set before him. Pondering the earlier conversation, he stared intently at her, “I want only to be the man I see when I look into your eyes.” He rose, kissed her gently and left for his morning walk.

Too often in life, meaningful moments are over before they start. Ian was gone, irrevocably. She could never be Urs’ lover again. She found comfort in the realization that she had not lost either forever. Her memories of Ian were the good ones—his faults forgotten and he lived on in their beloved children. While she and Urs would not be lovers, they were forever joined in a relationship too deep for complete understanding. The Chinese believe that if you save a life, you become responsible for that life. They were now responsible for each other.

Madeleine sighed and smiled. Her face shone with a contented glow. The cares, burdens, sorrows no longer furrowed her brow. Her winter had melted into glorious spring. Life was good and her smile widened as she heard a lyric tenor voice soaring in the distance.

CHAPTER TWELVE

Another week of days passed into memory. They walked together and talked, or were silent as the mood suited them. They held hands and touched. In the evenings they nestled close together by the fire.

They did not make love again and neither could have explained why. It was during one of these evenings they started to speak at the same time, did the, “You first,” “No, you first,” routine, laughed and said together, “It’s time to go.” They could not go to bed together, but neither could they bring themselves to part so they slept in front of the fire, cradling each other close.

They woke together, smiled at each other, kissed lightly and rose to pack their things.

This time, when there was silence in the car was not ominous or awkward. They rode, thoughts in tune and savoring memories.

Madeleine was ready to resume life with her family and open to all possibilities she knew would come her way.

Urs, the contained, confident Swiss Divo would retain a slight darkness in his eyes that would only add to his mystique and fuel fantasies of divas worldwide.

They shared another smile; he reached over and took her hand. And so they left the cottage at the edge of Dartmoor.

EPILOGUE

At any given moment in our lives, each of us can be vulnerable to devastation beyond what we would have believed possible. Our inner strength on which we rely can be cut from us when we least expect it and from a source never suspected.

Interludes in our lives can be brief or extended. They can be chosen or forced upon us. They can be times of serene happiness or fraught with anguish. But they are interludes, a ‘time out’ that, while affecting our lives, are not the continuum in which we live. They can be quickly forgotten or indelibly stamped into our reality. They can bring resolution and peace, provide respite but no answers or introduce new elements that carry their own dilemmas. But they are interludes, never to be repeated in their original format. If fate is kind, we are given someone special with whom to share that time.

For Madeleine and Urs, their shared interlude was a time of closeness that only human beings can share, a touching of each other’s souls, a laying to rest of spirit-killing events. Their acceptance that their time together was an interlude was reckoned without pondering the deep emotions stirred within each.

Urs was able to cleanse the sham of his past relationship and his never quite understood reaction to it from his mind. But there was an uneasiness within each time Maddie’s name entered his thoughts or her face appeared in his dreams or the memory of her body made his own stir.

Madeleine had internalized “what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.” But the busy life she now enjoyed seemed to always have an empty corner. She often thought of Urs but forced those thoughts into categories that were safe from self-determined improprieties.

Their interlude was past, never to be repeated. But we do not choose love; love chooses us. Love will not be denied.
