BackGround Story  June 18, 2006 Atlanta, Georgia. USA

A Night To Remember,
(DIVINE NIGHT)

My Daughter Sara, who is now 21, suffers from a type of Autism called Asperger's Syndrome. It is rare for a female to have Autism, but not impossible.

Sara had never been able to handle loud noices or crowds before, so when she started showing interest in the musical group IL DIVO, I began to research the group and their music, and found to my suprise they were an opera group, something Sara had shown no interest in before, so I began to look up the tour dates to find out the closest venue to where I live, and that was in Atlanta, a 4 hour drive from where I live.

I knew the risk of taking Sara on such a long drive was a big one, and also the huge crowd of people, and the contact of others, but I knew for IL DIVO my daughter could withstand it.

I started to look up phone numbers of people I could get in contact with to have a meeting arranged between IL DIVO and Sara and myself, and ended up speaking to a man named David Fogelson.

I explained to him about Sara's condition and her interest in IL DIVO, to which he replied he would like me to fax him my information about Sara, which I did immediately.

Mr Fogelson felt it was beneficial for Sara to meet IL DIVO.
We made the trip to Atlanta, Georgia and found our  seats....So far Sara was fine she had listen to the group on cd's all the way to the concert...

During the opening act of the concert, a lady tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I was Laura. When I had replied that I was, to my delight and Sara's, we were told that we would be meeting IL DIVO.

We met her at the door next to the stage after the opening act was finished, and she escorted us to the room where we would be meeting them.

We walked into a room where others were waiting also and then the lady who had brought us in ask if we had something for them to sign, we told her no...
She left us for a few moments and came back with a 2006 Tour book and Silver marker..

Sara began to get very nervous and a Lady standing near by told her to just Breathe.. Turns out it was OktoberSky (Cathy) from the Il Divo Forum...
Sara and I Spotted a couch and sat down talking and holding hands when we looked up to see ......
Carlos Marin was the first to enter.......

We shook hands with Carlos as I told Sara who each one was and said Hello to them and he signed the book they had given Sara....
Next was Urs Buhler who also shook hands but he walked away before we could get him to sign Sara's book....

Next was David Miller who came over and shook hands with us as we were sitting on the couch and he knelt down and talk for a few minutes with us and then signed Sara's book and I took her picture with them together .......

Next came Sebastien Izambard who was very kind and we shook hands and talk for a few minutes and he signed the book too but not before asking her what her name was and signed it TO SARA....

Then we turned to get the whole group into a picture with her but most were already gone and we turned back to Sebastien who thought we didn't want him in the picture but we convinced him we did and it came out beautiful and it is still my favorite of the 2 of them.........

IL DIVO HONORED BY USA & AUTISM SOCIETY SARAANDCRICKET003

After that we went back to our seats and enjoyed a wonderful concert.......
Thanks for everything Guys your Amazing...........

On the evening of May 8, 2009, in Fairfax Virginia, Il Divo was honored for their humanity in a private ceremony, held moments before their first US concert since 2006.

When they entered the area for the ceremony, we were greeted by each of them with a “Good Evening Ladies” as each Divo entered from their Meet & Greet with fans. David appeared first, Sebastien second, Carlos third, and Urs fourth.

As they stood together, we could see smiles grow on their faces as they saw the honors they were about to receive. LG began the ceremony by telling them they were being honored tonight, about Sara, and each asked how she was doing now.

The gentlemen of Il Divo were given the following honors:

Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition that states: in recognition of outstanding and invaluable service to the community. From U.S. Congressman Heath Schuler.

4 Plaques From Sara and Family Thanking them for her "Divine Night" with the American Autism Logo also included with special Permission From the AAS.....

From the North Carolina Autism Society, a Certificate of Appreciation for each of them in recognition for their contribution and support of the persons with Autism and their families.

Letter of Appreciation from US Senator Richard Burr for the kindness expressed to Sara Staton.

An American flag flown over the US Capitol in their honor and certificate indicating the flag was flown at the request of US Senator Elizabeth Dole.

There were blushes appearing here and there as they received the awards and honors. You could see in their faces that they were humbled and appreciative of this ceremony. At one point, I wasn’t sure if David and Carlos could keep it together.

LG then introduced me to present the flag to David. I did so with a very brief thank you on behalf of the US. As I handed him the flag in the case, I also reached out to shake his hand. I could feel a slight tremble from him as our hands met and our eyes met. The look on his face was so touching I all but started to cry myself. I then told them that the flag case and the frame for the certificate that accompanied it were custom made in the US for this special occasion. Carlos took the flag from David so he could take the framed certificate. After that, we chatted briefly with them and we took a few pictures as LG was interviewed for the OF/Divo Diary. Thanks to Sony and Nunnie, the only other people permitted to attend the ceremony, we have pictures of the Guys during this event.

I had casually mentioned that we had speeches prepared, but wouldn’t use them because of the short amount of time. David politely asked if he could read them, so I handed him the typed copies. I tried to make my way to Urs and Sebastien, but security needed to get them to the stage. I was able to give each of them a hug before they left and whispered my own thank you.

Here is a copy of LG’s speech had she been able to say it:

Each fan has come to Il Divo with their discovery story. The words may vary like the notes in a song, but regardless of the poetic license taken, the message rings loud and clear. Il Divo is more than music; it’s a journey of life - a path of exploration to known’s and unknown’s, passions and sorrow, victory and concession, solos and harmonies. Il Divo may translate to the ultimate male performer, but we have learned Performer goes beyond the proper execution of a melody.
Any well trained musician can use a basic skill or attribute to deliver a melody and pronounce the words correctly. It is the artist that takes the melody to our heart and waits patiently as we embrace it before we return their gift. Il Divo has taken this to a higher level to make it intimate, passionate and magical. One many of us still struggle to put words to other than to say, the gift you have so graciously given stays within us, embraced individually and yet still shared with others, others that have experienced their own unique gift.
This gift also doesn’t stay within a venue, packed up with the stage gear, or stuffed into a box or scrapbook; it lingers, welcomed by each of us, reflected in our very being. Starting with amazing talent and grace, you have harmonized yourselves to acts beyond simple performance; inviting and accepting the personal side as an active player into all you do; easily embrace your fans and comfortably interact with them. This isn’t a new concept; entertainers have done this through the ages. The key ingredient is, you don’t do this for press or fame, but out of genuine humanity - A gift we cherish as much as your musical talent.
Whether we’ve had the live experience or listened to the CDs and DVDs, there is an Il Divo aura that surrounds each of us. This aura has common elements, kindness, humanity, grace, and passion. While everyone’s passion may differ slightly, Il Divo’s lasting aura seems to appear and be recognized by those that aren’t necessarily music fans. Instead, they are recognized by leaders and those that guide others through every day life. I am speaking of those that are hands, minds, interpreters, shoulders, and voices. Voices that may not be as musical, but they still have a message. These messages are a heart-felt thank you for the gifts of kindness, humanity, and passion each of you has so generously shared with those that may not be able to express their thanks alone. I am here tonight, representing these leaders and caregivers to deliver their message.
Carlos Marin, David Miller, Sebastien Izambard, and Urs Buhler I would like to present this Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition that states: in recognition of outstanding and invaluable service to the community.
I also have a Letter of Appreciation from US Senator Richard Burr for the kindness expressed to Sara Stanton. State Representative Carolyn Justus of Henderson Country North Carolina has also sent her thanks in a separate letter.
Finally, on behalf of the American Autism Society and the North Carolina Autism Society, a Certificate of Appreciation for each of you in recognition for your contribution and support of the persons with Autism and their families.
Gentleman, what you did that very special night in Atlanta Georgia on June 18, 2006 was most likely not out of the ordinary to you, but it will live in many hearts and souls for a lifetime. On behalf of myself, and my family, thank you for being the ultimate performer that you are.

And mine:

Gentlemen of Il Divo,

This day marks yet another victory beyond what the world celebrates today as VE Day, a day we celebrate the uniting of the countries of Europe and the US in plans for a more peaceful world. While you have shown the world many of your own victories in all you represent or been a part of, uniting more than four different countries with your talented voices, it is not just the music that is cause for your celebration tonight. Instead, it is the breaking of barriers by simple conversation and kindness that has achieved a stronger bond between those that can speak for themselves and those that cannot in the traditional sense. On June 18, 2006 before entertaining a sell out crowd in Atlanta, Georgia, you spent a few precious moments with an Autistic Individual that is a fan of yours. Autism comes in many degrees, but it seems you didn’t consider any of that with this special fan. You spoke to her as an individual, a fan, not an Autistic individual or Autistic Fan.
What you also may not realize is that your conversation, though brief and one of millions, it was also the catalyst for a stronger bond between mother and child that has bloomed into an ever growing passion that can be felt around the world. That mother is not me, but one of my forum sisters, who stands here today. A sister that has stretched her love and passion beyond mere biology to embrace other Il Divo fans as daughters, nieces, and sisters; a larger family united without border or boundary, to celebrate you. So you, Carlos, David, Sebastien and Urs have quiet a victory to celebrate. Today, the barrier broken goes beyond the harmonious music you have made. It has grown to so much more…an exploration of talents that embrace all arts, culture, language, and the traditional meaning of family, to echo what you have so graciously shown us can and will happen, if we simply believe in a very special promise.
This barrier was broken in the United States, a country founded by citizens from many countries, much like Il Divo itself. Its flag is a symbol that combines the colors of many other countries, including France, Spain and Switzerland. Therefore, as a small token of thanks for the victories I’ve mentioned, I would like to present you with an American flag flown in your honor over the Capital. May it be a symbol of thanks from a grateful nation for the priceless gifts you have so generously given in yourselves and talents. You have truly put the art back in Heart. Thank you.

Laura Thank you for letting me be apart of that night. I could see all the emotions on their faces and in their eyes when they found out why they were there. David and Carlos were especially emotional. For a moment I thought they were going to cry. Their eyes were glistening. But, they held it together and so did I. I got to shake each ones hand and thank them for the kindness they showed Sara and in return received a hug from each of them. So thank you Carlos, David, Sebestien and Urs, and a special Thank You to Laura for letting me be a part of a very special night. :thank You: LOL

Rep. Shuler Honored to have His Letter of Appreciation Presented to Musical Group by Western North Carolina Mother and Daughter

Fairfax, VA: On May 8, 2009, U.S. Representative Heath Shuler (D-Waynesville) was honored to have Sara Staton of Western North Carolina present the famous musical group, Il Divo, with his letter of appreciation commending their contribution to the autistic community.
Sara, 21, has been diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, a milder form of autism. Although previous exposure to loud music had been uncomfortable for her, Sara finds listening to Il Divo engaging and calming.
She and her mother, Laura Staton, attended an Il Divo concert in Fairfax, VA, where they had an opportunity to meet with the operatic quartet before their performance and present them with the letter.
“Promoting education and public awareness of this issue is a priority. Sara is obviously a brave young woman, and her journey will serve as an inspiration to all young people living with autism. As we work together to strengthen the treatments and early diagnosis of autism, we make gains in our understanding of its causes of and cures.” said Rep. Shuler.
Rep. Shuler’s letter was presented to Il Divo along with a letter from Senator Burr and awards of recognition from the North Carolina Autism Society.

Just a quick note for those that don't have quicktime for the video, or would like to try VLC as their media player. VLC plays just about any format, including MOV (which is MAC based). To download a free version of VLC media player, go to
www.videolan.org
You will need to select the computer type you are using - i.e. Windows XP, Vista, MAC, etc. You can also get VLC player for your other electronics such as mp2s, etc. Again, it is a free download, unless you want PRO, then, there is a charge.

If you are unable to get to videolan.org, you can also get it thru
www.download.com
They will supply you with a hyperlink for a free download as well.

Remember, this is only a player, you can't burn or copy from VLC media player.

Enjoy the video!
