Chapter 145
Here Comes the Bride

“There, that’s all of you men finished.” Maria Schnieder the florist stood back to survey her handiwork: palest pink rose boutonnieres for the groomsmen and a white one with the barest touch of pink at the edges for the rather fidgety bridegroom.

“Urs, yours is fine. If you keep fiddling with it you’ll be wearing a stem by the time you get out there.” she fussed as Urs stuffed the offending hands into his pockets and quickly yanked them out again.

“Felix, I need the rings so I can tie them on the pillow for Luca. They will just be in a simple bow so all you need to do is pull the end. Both of them will be together. Hand them to Father Mike to bless and he’ll do the rest.” Felix nodded as his younger brother watched him like a hawk, making sure he was paying attention, ready to quiz him as soon as Maria was out of earshot.

Urs had just opened his mouth to speak when there was a knock on the door and Gerry came in. “Susanna is just leaving the hotel. It’s time for us Carlos.” She could almost hear Urs exhale at her words and she patted his arm sympathetically. “You will be fine, Urs, just like when you go onstage.”

Urs smiled weakly, “Ja, I know.”

“Well, buddy we’d better get seated ourselves before Gerry and Carlos do their song. It won’t be long now. Hang in there.” David said with a slap on the back.

“See you onstage.” Seb added as he followed David and closed the door on Urs and Felix.

*******************************

Gerry and Carlos stood on the right side of the altar in front of the string quartet. David and Seb sat behind the musicians since they would add their voices to Carlos for the special songs during the ceremony. They gave a little wave of recognition to Juliana and Sandy as they sat down. Susanna’s girlfriends filled the third pew. Marissa took her seat on the aisle, Carlos nodded to the musicians and they began.

The Prayer

http://rapidshare.com/files/215378598/The_Prayer.mp3

As they finished and sat down, Gerry whispered to Carlos, “I think Susanna just arrived.” and the message was passed to the other Divos. They could only see occasional flashes of white, but after a minute or two the string quartet began Wachet Auf. Mami, wearing a lovely, coffee colored shantung dress, started down the aisle on an usher’s arm with Papa walking behind her. She made her smiling, dignified way up the steps, took the lighted taper from the usher and lit the candle representing the Buhler family. The usher led her to the second pew on the right where Papa stood waiting for her.

The music changed to Pachabel’s Canon and Muz, in a gold two piece slipdress with a beaded jacket, was escorted, smiling, past the pews decorated with white roses and tulle. She lit the candle for the Nelson family and sat down in the second pew on the left.

**************************

“Now Luca, remember to hold the pillow up like this. Let Aunt Susanna see you do it. Good job!” Susanna passed him off to mommy Pia for a minute. Next it was Leonie’s lesson, Dropping Silk Rose Petals 101. She got an A on the practice test and was handed off to her mommy Irma.

“Is my wreath on straight?” Her nervous fingers patted all around it.

~*~ Urs & The Kissing Hand~*~ BY: Sue - Page 7 Swisstraditionwreath

“Here Susanna. Hold your bouquet and leave your hands off your wreath or we’ll have two flower girls going down the aisle.” Maria warned.

~*~ Urs & The Kissing Hand~*~ BY: Sue - Page 7 Bouquet

A suitably chastised Susanna licked her lips and did as she was told. I could really use a drink of water, even just one swallow. My throat is so dry. Urs will probably think he’s marrying a frog when I say ‘I do’. Just wait till I get my hands on Marissa.

The couples lined up: Pia/Willem, Eva/Franz, and Irma/Hans. Dar gave Susanna a kiss on the cheek and a hug and took her place next. Maria stood Luca and Leonie behind her and signaled they were ready. The harpist nodded in acknowledgment, Seb picked up his guitar and they began playing Canon in D.

In the room to the left, Father Ludwig and Father Mike gave Urs a reassuring pat on the shoulder and smiled. “It’s time, Urs.”

Urs almost readjusted his boutonniere, squared his shoulders, and returned their smile. As they walked out and took their places he thought how right they had been. It was like being onstage, the thrilling excitement of feeling the energy, the happiness of his friends and family who were here to share this special day and the pride and love he saw in Mami and Papa’s face. Standing even straighter, smiling even wider, he focused his attention, every sense, to prepare his heart for what came next, the first glimpse of his bride Susanna walking down the aisle to marry him.

*********************************

“Punkin, you are beautiful. I’ve never seen you so contented. I thank God that you’ve found such a wonderful man to love you and take care of you. Don’t be so busy being happy ever after that you forget your old man now!” he teased.

“Not a chance, daddy. Who else would you take fishing? Muz will never change that much!”

Daddy held out his arm for his little Princess and they began walking down the aisle to begin the happy ever after.

**************************

There she is. Urs could feel his heart skip as his eyes momentarily grew larger.
What could be more beautiful than his bride coming to meet him?

She came to him in an aura of whiteness that clung to her as dew clings to a rose with diamonds that glistened in her eyes. A blush of love pinked her cheeks and she carried a bouquet of promises.

His bride, Susanna: a commitment robed in elegance. Susanna: tomorrow bringing hope today. Susanna: promised fidelity, faithfully delivered.

Daddy lifted the veil from her face, tenderly bestowed his kiss of blessing and gave her hand to Urs. They exchanged excited, shy smiles, turned to face the altar and the marriage ceremony began.

During the Mass they stood and knelt at the prie-dieu, a portable kneeler at the bottom of the altar. Father Ludwig motioned and Urs took Susanna’s arm as they walked up the stairs to the unity candle.

Each one lit a taper from their family candle and together they lit the larger one in the middle.

Susana spoke first. “This day I will marry my Foxhole friend, the one I laugh with, live for, and dream with. The one I love.”

Urs replied, “Two lives, two hearts joined together in friendship, united forever in love.”

They then snuffed their family candle, signifying the union of the two families into the new family, Urs and Susanna.

They returned to their places while Mr. Nelson did the first reading in English and Mr. Buhler did his in German. Guests could follow along easily since the wedding program was in both languages.

Then the wedding party reassembled on both sides of the altar as Urs and Susanna stepped up to stand in front of Father Mike. Felix handed him the rings to bless, Susanna and Urs said their vows, exchanged rings, beamed, and squinched.

They all returned to their places, Father Mike looked over at the musicians and began to sing. It seemed Urs and Susanna were already becoming of one mind as he passed her his handkerchief before she even asked…..after he used it himself.

Irish Wedding Song

http://rapidshare.com/files/215205952/Irish_Wedding_Song.mp3

Mass continued, Seb, David , and Carlos sang “Panis Angelicus” and near the end Dar handed Susanna a bouquet of red roses. Urs took her arm and together they placed them on a side altar as the Divos sang “Ave Maria” with Seb’s new arrangement. Susanna and Urs traded a smile as they held hands tightly, and let the emotions of the day wash over them as Seb began to sing Urs’ solo. With his reworked harmonies and Carlos singing some of Seb’s parts it became a amazing tribute to the grateful couple.

They stood for the blessing and Urs was given permission by the two smiling Fathers to kiss the bride. And a very thorough kiss it was too, considering it was the first one he’d done onstage and in front of two priests, four parents, and a churchful of friends and relatives.

Chapter 146
The Reception

“We would like to introduce Mr. and Mrs. Urs Buhler.” said Father Ludwig and Father Mike in unison as even they had a tear in their eyes.

A beaming Urs tucked Susanna’s arm possessively in his and covered her hand. Dar gave her the bouquet and arranged her dress. The Recessional music, the Finale from Handel’s Water Music accompanied the joyous couple down the aisle as they smiled at their loving friends, relatives and each other.

While their wedding guests visited outside or went on ahead to meet them at the reception, they returned to sign the wedding certificate, meet the photographer in the church with the wedding party for a few photos, and last but not least confirm their good luck. Susanna’s wreath had not been a dud!

“Did you know?” Susanna asked as they stood at the top step of the church looking down.

“No honestly, I didn’t, but then after the Zurich concert…” Urs chuckled as they stepped down between a glittering pathway of loving family and Divos waving sparklers.

************************

Urs and Susanna leaned back in the privacy of the limo and clinked champagne flutes.

“I love you Mr. Buhler.”

“I love you Mrs. Buhler.”

Susanna took a huge sip and closed her eyes in relief. Finally I can have something to drink!

“I’ve been waiting all day to give you a proper kiss. You about drove me wild during the ceremony licking your lips like that. Were you trying to kill me?” Urs asked as he leaned over and set his glass down.

He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her hungrily as his tongue slipped between her parted lips he murmured his approval.

“I didn’t mean to, but I was so thirsty.” Susanna answered a little breathlessly. “They wouldn’t let me drink anything after I got dressed because it would be too much trouble to use the bathroom.” she explained as she finished her glass of champagne in one gulp and handed it to Urs.

He recaptured her mouth with a hungry urgency as his tongue mated with hers.

“Mmmmmm that was definitely an improper kiss there, Mr. Buhler.” Susanna gasped as his busy fingers headed for the top of her dress.

“It’s alright, we’re married.” he smiled into her collarbone. “Exactly how does this stay up again?”

“You’ll find out later. Now behave. We can’t arrive at the reception looking all messy.” Susanna attempted to hold his fingers still.

“Disheveled,…..the word is disheveled,” Urs blinky winked as he sat up and smoothed his hair behind his ears.

“Do I look alright?” Susanna fussed as she adjusted her dress and reached for her purse.

“You look perfect, Mrs. Buhler.” Urs said as he kissed her gently.

“Why thank you, Mr. Buhler.” she replied, loving the sound of her new name almost as much as she loved her new husband.

Some of the guests spilled out onto the sunny terrace in the still pleasant temperature of late afternoon, enjoying drinks and hor d’oeurves. Others milled around the lounge area or found their seats at the round guest tables.

Susanna put her hand on Urs’ arm as they looked around the room. “Isn’t it breathtaking? Just like we planned. Let’s go see the cake.” Susanna pulled Urs’ arm toward the wedding cake sitting on a table off to the side.

~*~ Urs & The Kissing Hand~*~ BY: Sue - Page 7 Weddingcake

“See I told you it would be chocolate.” Susanna pointed to the rich, dark, German chocolate cake sitting on the silver platter.

~*~ Urs & The Kissing Hand~*~ BY: Sue - Page 7 Groomscake

Urs sidled over to his cake and looked around. The coast was clear. Susanna recognized the look a second too late. It was the same one he’d had when he’d spotted the H toilet. Before she could say a word, his right index finger was swiping over the icing and into his mouth as he entered chocolate heaven.

“You’d better not let Mami catch you or I’ll be a widow before the wedding night.” she laughed. Urs guessed one swipe would have to suffice.

As they mingled with their guests, they were pleased to see Rosemary and Marissa at a small table near the door chatting and handing out the handkerchiefs. From the looks of the basket they’d also garnered a lot of support for the International Red Cross.

PostSubject: Chapter 146 * The Reception * Part 2   ~*~ Urs & The Kissing Hand~*~ BY: Sue - Page 7 EmptyThu Jul 09, 2009 8:38 pm

Urs noticed David off to the side, informally video taping guests who wished to give their congratulations on camera. Seb came over with a question about the band so Susanna took this opportunity to find Dar and attempt a trip to the bathroom.

Felix, the official time keeper, found them just as Urs was introducing Susanna to some of his school friends. It was time for dinner so the bridal party along with the two priests, the Buhlers, and the Nelsons took their places at the head table. Father Ludwig gave the blessing, Father Mike added “and bless the cook”, Urs looked at Susanna and smiled an ‘aha’, and they sat down to eat.

At each guest’s place they found a wedding favor waiting. It was a white tented card with a cutout heart revealing a heart-shaped cookie cutter tied with white organza ribbon -- and a yummy sugar cookie recipe with the message, "Enjoy -- while remembering the sweetness of our wedding day!"

~*~ Urs & The Kissing Hand~*~ BY: Sue - Page 7 Cookiecutterfavors

Susanna was still floating so the only thing she remembered eating was Chogalipaschtetli , a large puff-pastry shell filled with creamy diced veal. She had fallen in love with the totally unpronounceable name the first time Urs had mentioned it. Later when he ordered it for her she’d also fallen in love with the taste and it had been her choice for the reception. Of course Urs could not refuse her.

As their plates were removed, Felix, as best man, rose to give the first toast to the bride and groom:
My greatest wish for the two of you is that through the years your love for each other will so deepen and grow, that years from now you will look back on this day, your wedding day, as the day you loved each other the least. To Susanna and Urs….

Susanna was slightly taken aback as Muz rose next, but Daddy and the Buhlers didn’t seem to be surprised at all. She turned to Urs and saluted him with her glass:
To the man who has conquered the bride's heart, and her mother's. To Urs….

Then Papa stood and raised his glass to Susanna:
There is no greater happiness for a man than approaching a door at the end of a day, knowing someone on the other side of that door is waiting for the sound of his footsteps. To Susanna…….

Not to be outdone, Father Ludwig and Father Mike rose as one. Father Ludwig was first:
Marriage is a feast where the grace is sometimes better than the dinner.
then Father Mike:
To love is to receive a glimpse of heaven. To Susanna and Urs…..

Urs noticed some chair shuffling at the round table nearest to them. Inga and Pia went over to help Urs’ Great Aunt Therese up from her chair. Urs smiled as he tried to remember just how old she was now, certainly the oldest one here. How long had she been a widow now? Great Uncle Peter must have been gone at least ten years. She smiled lovingly at the newlyweds and began speaking. Urs translated for Susanna:
The man or woman you really love will never grow old to you. Through the wrinkles of time, through the bowed frame of years, you will always see the dear face and feel the warm heart union of your eternal love. To Urs and Susanna…..

As the remainder of the tables were cleared, Urs and Susanna went from table to table visiting and thanking everyone for helping them celebrate.

By the time they’d made the rounds, Urs sounded like a broken record with his whispered, “Is it time yet?” She was about to say, “No, not yet, Urs.” for the fifth time when she saw the signal from Joanne and Leslie.

“Alright, Urs. It’s time to cut the cake now.” She’d almost needed a seatbelt as he propelled her toward the table. With one longing glance at the groom’s cake he focused on the photographer’s directions for holding Susanna’s hand as together they made the first cut into the towering wedding cake with a Houdini bride and Bag Boy groom near the top.

As they fed each other cake, Susanna could guarantee he’d be on his best behavior and not smush cake in her face. He knew what would happen if he did. The photographer was delighted, especially when he’d leaned over to gently kiss away some frosting on her mouth, fortunately his camera didn’t capture his tongue.

Then it was time for the groom’s cake. Oh happy day! No small token piece of chocolate cake for our Urs; he needed a man-sized one. Susanna stood back a little, not wanting any chocolate crumbs to get on her dress. She needn’t have worried. The morsel Urs fed her would hardly qualify as a crumb to begin with. As luck would have it though, there were several samples to taste in the vicinity of his mouth. He was finally persuaded to return to the head table to finish his cake.

**************************

“Seb, that arrangement was absolutely amazing. I kept telling you that you had an easier top than mine. Now will you believe me?” Urs gave Seb a heartfelt thank you and hugged his shoulder.

Susanna’s thank you hug almost tested his stuffing.
“It truly touched my heart, Seb. Thank you, all of you, Gerry, Carlos, Sandy, David for helping to make this day even more special. Then of course we owe Juli special thanks, for getting us all together here on time. You know how Urs appreciated that!”

“You might want to save your thanks, Sus. You haven’t heard us yet!” David quipped as Sandy elbowed him in the ribs.

“I think it’s about time for that right now.” Urs said noticing Felix across the room twirling his finger in the air.

“Mrs. Buhler may I have the honor of the first dance with my wife?” Urs did a little half bow, kissed her hand and led her to the center of the dance floor. Herr Elmayer I hope you’re watching.

David and Sandy went to stand near the band as the music started and they began to sing.

http://rapidshare.com/files/215205951/In_This_Life.mp3

Herr Elmayer would not have approved of their closeness, however their grace and footwork were impeccable as Urs sang softly for only Susanna.

In This Life
For all I’ve been blessed with in this life,
There was emptiness in me.
I was imprisoned by the power of gold.
With one honest touch, you set me free.

Let the world stop turning,
Let the sun stop burning,
Let them tell me love’s not worth going through.
If it all falls apart, I will know deep in my heart
The only dream that matters has come true;
In this life, I was loved by you.

For every mountain I have climbed,
Every raging river crossed,
You were the treasure that I longed to find.
Without your love I would be lost.

Let the world stop turning,
Let the sun stop burning,
Let them tell me love’s not worth going through.
If it all falls apart, I will know deep in my heart
The only dream that matters has come true;
In this life, I was loved by you.

The guests applauded the bride and groom as the band continued. Mami and Daddy claimed their partners and as they danced everyone could see in their eyes the immutable bond between parent and child as they remembered and thanked each other for life gifts they had received.

Susanna and Urs were returned to each other’s arms as the other guests joined them and the cake was served.

“When Houdini?” Urs whispered as expertly twirled her off the dance floor and steered them toward a quiet corner.

“When what Bag Boy?” Here we go again. I hope it’s not going to be one of those conversations again.

“When can we leave? I can’t wait to be alone with you…to make love with you” Urs nipped her ear and began trailing butterfly kisses down her neck.

“MMmmmm Bag Boy. That sounds wonderful. How long will it take to get to the hotel?” Susanna said with a sigh as she turned her head to make it easier for Urs lips to stay on the trail.

“Only about an hour, Houdini.” Urs breathed, not faltering a step on his journey toward the top on her dress.

Susanna jerked her head up suddenly and Urs’ lips tumbled off the trail as she squeaked, “An hour! Where are you taking me? Timbuktu?”

“No, of course not. We’re only going to Zurich. I just thought it would be a good idea in case….well with all the guys staying here and a lot of my relatives…….I just didn’t want us to be disturbed, that’s all.” explained Urs the King of the Overthinkers.

Susanna grabbed Urs hand and began searching for Dar. “And…” Urs began but she shushed him.

“We need to find Dar and get my throwaway bouquet. Why don’t you do that and I’ll start spreading the word to the unmarried girls?”
Susanna let go of him but he grabbed her hand again.

“Couldn’t we skip that part and just leave now?” he pleaded.

“Well if you REALLY want to Bag Boy I guess we could,” she said slyly, “the garter toss thing is pretty silly I guess.”

“Wait. You’re right. It would be a shame to disappoint the guys. We could leave right after that.” Urs you are so easy.

“I can hardly wait, Bag Boy. Oh, I’m wearing the garter on my right leg.” Susanna winked and hurried off in search of her bouquet. Urs had no trouble letting her hand go this time.

“One, two, three.” Susanna leaned forward for momentum and tossed the bouquet over her head into the crowd of jumping women. “Mine! I’ve got it!” squealed an excited Juliana who emerged victorious from the bottom of the pile with the slightly shedding bouquet held aloft in triumph. As the girls gathered around to congratulate her, Susanna looked over at Urs and saw the wheels turning. She certainly hoped Seb would be paying attention.

Susanna sat on the chair and grew pinker and sillier by the moment. There was Urs on his knees, playing to the crowd, looking around nonchalantly as his hand delved under Susanna’s dress and slip. He would put on his puzzled look occasionally as if he’d almost found it but then….no.

“Urs, the right leg, you looli.” Susanna laughed, then it suddenly died on her lips as his seductive fingers traced ever higher circles up her leg.

“Urs Buhler that is not a good idea. Take the garter off NOW.” Susanna ordered as she smiled through her gritted teeth.

Urs the Relentless ignored her with a cheeky grin and let his fingers do the walking….past the top of her stocking, along the satin garter, then smooth skin, then….. Urs fingers jumped back as if scalded, hopped over to the gartered leg, pulled it off and held the prize up with trembling fingers. Was it suddenly very hot in here? Urs put two fingers under his collar to help cool his warm face as he stood on rather unsteady legs and threw the garter, all thoughts of aiming for Seb having flown from his brain.

Fortunately, David was there to save the day. With his reach he was able to capture the garter. Then David, butterfingers that he is, accidentally dropped it onto an unsuspecting Seb. Imagine that!

“Why didn’t you tell me you aren’t wearing any underwear?” a still shook-up Urs asked a still grinning Susanna.

“I did say it wasn’t a good idea, Bag Boy.” she reminded him.

“Yes, but…..Do you have any other surprises you’d like to show me?”

“Only for the next hundred years or so. Can we start our honeymoon now Mr. Buhler?”

“That sounds like a wonderful idea Mrs. Buhler.”

Chapter 147
Felix was Right

Susanna was about to ask, “What took you so long?” as she waited for Urs to bring his rental car around to pick her up. Then she heard why. The Divos had been decorating.

Urs got out muttering something about, “Where was a Swiss knife when you needed one?” There were still a few noisy tin cans tied to the rear bumper and several long strings that had obviously held more noise makers which now lay in the back seat. While he was helping Susanna into the car, the doorman came to his aid and removed all but one of the cans. After all you can’t completely fly in the face of tradition now can you? Urs decided they’d best be on their way before they attracted more of a smiling crowd. He’d clean the windows later.

“You see now why I didn’t want to stay in Lucerne tonight?” he chuckled and pointed to the back seat.

“I think the cow bell is rather cute myself and it is romantic don’t you think?” Susanna asked as she leaned over to look in the back seat.

“I should have known you’d like that! You and your cowbells. What am I going to do with you Mrs. Buhler? No don’t answer that. I have more than enough ideas going through my mind already.”

**************************

“So that’s what keeps your dress up.” Urs observed as he unzipped her dress and helped her step out of it.

“Now the rest please.” Susanna instructed. “Oh that feels so good. Now I can finally breathe. You should just be thankful you aren’t a woman, Urs, and have to wear all this stuff.” said Susanna in her tell-it-like-it-is voice.

“Oh believe me, I am, especially now.” Urs crooned as he pulled her closer to him and his ten explorers.

Susanna sought his mouth with hers, enjoying its silky touch. She gently probed the seam of his lips until his tongue found hers and their kiss deepened.

Urs broke their kiss with a ragged sigh. “Susanna, you’re not helping here.” he said as he ran his hands through his hair.

“I thought I was doing pretty good.” she grinned as she lowered her eyes and reached for him again.

“Susanna, please. I want this to be a special memory for us tonight. I want you so badly right now but you’re not making it easy for me.” Urs said in a husky voice as he rubbed her cheek.

“I need you too Urs, but I promise to be good until we get to Zurich. I want our wedding night to be special too.” she sighed as she nipped his chin and soothed it with a kiss. Why don’t you take my suitcase down while I get changed” Maybe you can take some water to clean off the windows too. I’ll meet you downstairs.

“I love you, Houdini.” Urs said with a kiss.

“I love you too, Bag Boy. Oh and just so you know, all bets are off if we find a Handicapped toilet.” she grinned as she disappeared into the bathroom and shut the door.

************************

They arrived at the Baur au Lac in Zurich abut 10:00. Susanna knew she would never forget seeing their names on the register for the first time in public, Mr. and Mrs. Urs Buhler. She almost choked as she swallowed a huge ‘Yipee!’.

The hotel was magnificent, their suite was magnificent, Urs was magnificent and the champagne was magnificent. Urs made her switch to water after two quick glasses of champagne.

“Come, look here.” Urs beckoned as he stepped out onto the balcony overlooking Lake Zurich. The lights near the water were reflected across the dark expanse. “Tomorrow we can eat breakfast out here if you’d like.” He smiled into her hair as drew her closer to stand in front of him as he pointed out the buildings along the lake.

“That would be perfect.” she agreed turning her head up to meet his kiss. “I know we have to be in New York on Wednesday for the start of Barbra rehearsals so are we staying here until then?”

“I have another place in mind. Would you like to hear about it?” Urs teased.

“Of course, you silly wombat. Where? Tell me.”

Urs wrapped his arms around her as she leaned into him and closed her eyes, ready to picture their destination.

“It’s very private, secluded, beautiful gardens, excellent food, quiet, the rooms are quite spacious and I think they might even have a handicapped shower…..or two…..or three……or “

“FOUR! We’re going home, please tell me we’re going home to our own married home. Right? Please Urs?”

“Yes, Mrs. Buhler we’re going to our new home. It’s about time I saw where we and our less than 20 children will be living for the next hundred years or so!” Urs was prepared this time for the flying hug as he picked her up and carried her over to her suitcase.

“Now Mrs. Buhler can we please start our honeymoon? I want to see you in my gift for at least a few minutes.”

*************************

They had both unpacked just what they needed for tonight and tomorrow and Susanna had disappeared into the bathroom after making Urs promise to leave something for her to ‘unwrap’.

Susanna eyed the huge marble tub and mentally thought maybe ‘tomorrow’, but tonight she would come to Urs in his pink dreamy cloud with one tiny surprise to unwrap. After all she had promised him a hundred years of surprises.

~*~ Urs & The Kissing Hand~*~ BY: Sue - Page 7 Honeymoonbathroom

Urs had put on soft romantic music and dimmed the lights. She almost forgot to breathe when he turned and opened his arms to her and she floated into them, into him. It was as if she was out of her body, looking at this perfect romantic scene with eyes filled with happy tears. He had unbuttoned his shirt partway and she smiled at his shoes and socks neatly lined up beside the chair.

His fingers caressed her shoulders through the silky robe as her fingers undid his shirt buttons and pulled it free from his trousers. Their hands lifted shirt and peignoir to fall to the floor.

“Susanna, I have something else for you to unwrap. Just a minute. I have it here in my pocket. ” Urs murmured into her hair.

“Yes, I know, Urs. I want you too. I love you so much.” Susanna answered as she kissed his chest.

“No, you silly wombat woman…..I mean yes but that’s not it. Happy Birthday, Susanna.” Urs reached into his pocket and brought out a long jewelry box.

“I’d completely forgotten. Thank you Urs. What a wonderful surprise! All I could think about was the wedding. I didn’t even think of the date.” she said excitedly as she reached up to give him a quick kiss as he handed her the box.

She opened the box and shook her head in amazement. “It’s perfect, so perfect.”’

“Now it’s very easy to take off and you don’t need to wear it all the time, just when you….”

“Will you please stop running on because you’re nervous, Urs. I love it and I love you. And I’ll wear it all the time if I want to so there.” she said with finality as she turned around for him to fasten it.

Susanna watched in the mirror as Urs closed the clasp and bent his head to kiss her neck as the diamond sparkled. As she watched, a flood of emotions washed over her as she became lost in the sight and the feelings of Urs’ mouth on her skin.

Susanna turned and wrapped her arms around the warm skin-on-skin feel of his chest as she pressed her face into his neck. How she loved the smell of him, his masculine blend of woodsy cologne and another scent that was exclusive Urs that made her want to melt and be absorbed by him.

His warm mouth did incredible things to the sensitive hollow beneath her ear. He brushed his lips over her hair. “I love you.”

“Say it again.” she whispered.

“I love you, my Susanna, my wife. I love you so much my bones ache.”

Susanna’s hands made short work of his belt, buttons and zip as he stepped out of his trousers. Yes! He had on her favorite red undies.

Urs tenderly kissed her gown off as it fell with a soft sigh. Then he leaned back and laughed at the perfectness of her, his surprising wife, his magical Houdini. She was sexily enchanting. It was at that precise moment he knew she would never let him tire of her, never become bored or complacent. She was unique and he thanked God she was his. She too had left him one last surprise to remove, a white lacy thong with ‘I do’ written in crystal along the side.

“I hoped” she said.

“Your first surprise.” he said, as they removed the last barriers.

“Kiss me, Urs.”

He needed no encouragement. Framing her face with his hands, he kissed her deeply. He drew out the kiss, stroking her tongue, sucking it, plundering, moving and thrusting in imitation of what they craved.

As her body softened with desire he lifted her, carrying her across the room to the bed. She sank lower on the bed as Urs lay down beside her.

How he wanted to express all the feeling welling inside him, caring, cherishing, loving…

Her lips opened and her breath caught in her throat as their tongues touched. For a moment they held there, motionless save for the breath that wafted between them as if their life forces were uniting, creating a unique oneness, free at last to share their very being as man and wife.

**********************

“Mmmm.” Susanna snuggled into Urs and closed her eyes. What a delicious day they’d had starting with waking up in Urs’ arms…..her husband’s arms! How she loved to say that, think that! Then their leisurely lovemaking in the bath, a slow, sensual awakening, a foretaste of what was to come tonight in their house, soon to be a home as they entered it as man and wife.

Urs looked down at his wife in loving amazement as he read the latest motorcycle magazine. She hadn’t been out of his sight. How did she…. No use raking his brain. She was simply Susanna. And just how did she know he was waiting to sneak another of those sinfully rich champagne truffles she’d made him buy in Zurich?

Urs thought back to Felix’s toast. Was it only yesterday? He smiled. Felix was right. He could honestly say he loved her more today than yesterday, their wedding day, and in a few hours he would carry his wife over the threshold of their home.

Chapter 148
Home and Away

“I like what you’ve done with the shrubs in the front, Susanna. Much neater.” Urs head was on a swivel as he took in the front entrance of their house. He pulled their suitcases as Susanna led the way.

She waited at the door for him to get out his key. The look they shared as the lock clicked and he pushed open the door said, ‘The moment we cross the threshold of this house, it will become a home, our home.’ Urs picked her up and carried her into the foyer, gently setting her on her feet.

“Welcome home, Mrs. Buhler.” How proud I feel, how protective and strong, to think I am able to provide this beautiful place to bring my wife. A place for our love to grow, where our children will play, where we will grow old together.

“I’ve been waiting so long for this day. Welcome home Mr. Buhler. Welcome to the start of our wonderful life together.” How happy I am to make our home a place where Urs can feel my presence with the little touches that are uniquely mine. It will be a welcoming retreat: a place apart from the everyday activity and confusion around him, a place where he can relax and feel peaceful and content knowing he will be cared for.

Wrapped in each other’s arms, their kisses were slow, welcoming greetings, searching and sighing-- as full of sweet surprises as their love today, as deeply promising as forever.

Susanna was almost as excited to show Urs what she’d done to the house as he was to see it. Pictures had just not done it justice. The suitcases practically levitated upstairs and into the master suite. Then the grand tour began.

“Urs will you come out of there you silly Swiss wombat? I want to show you the rest.” Susanna pleaded as Urs sat on the shower bench in their shower like a grinning king on his throne, claiming he was just testing it. “We’ll use it later, promise. Now come on.”

He held out for all of two minutes and then of course he had to tour every room upstairs and down, practically bouncing with excitement, testing the furniture, looking out the windows, and talking a mile a minute in a language thick with “wery’s”. Susanna couldn’t have been happier if she’d been twins.

While a casserole warmed up, they toured the patio and gardens and Urs staked a claim on the shed for his bike. After supper he quickly established his spot in the pecking order by persuading Susanna that having milk and cookies upstairs in their bedroom was a wonderful tradition. She did not take a whole lot of persuading though, in fact they almost didn’t make it upstairs. But eventually they christened the new handicapped shower in their suite-- one down, three to go.

***********************

They didn’t manage to visit them all before they left on Tuesday to rehearse for the Barbra Tour, but then it gave them something to look forward to, as if they needed an excuse!

They loved the Tour, not only for the exposure and experience they gained from working with such a legendary entertainer, but also for giving them such a memorable seven week honeymoon. There was no frantic traveling night after night and several of the venues were like visiting old friends again only with more time to get acquainted this time.

One of their highlights was being able to spend a week in Chicago. Of course they visited Dar and Bob but Susanna was thrilled she could show Urs where she grew up, went to school and yes, even the park where she and Daddy had skated so many years ago.

Even the holidays seemed to smile on them favorably. The Tour ended a few days before Thanksgiving so they spent that weekend in Florida with Muz and Dad. Since they’d be traveling as usual the day after Christmas, Urs and Susanna would be free to celebrate with Mami and Papa. Urs could hardly wait for Susanna to experience her first Buhler Christmas. He’d even been doing extra workouts in preparation for carrying her suitcase full of books.

********************

“Luca! Jakob! Stop fighting.” Mami scolded as the two boys jostled each other trying to climb over her to sit beside Susanna in the pew. “You’ll have to excuse them, Susanna. I told Pia they were still too young for midnight Mass, but Urs insisted. I think he’s forgotten how hard it was for him to sit still when he was their age.” she whispered confidentially.

“They’re fine, Mami. They remind me of my class. I really miss them sometimes.” Susanna smiled as she gave both boys a little wave.

“Look! There’s Urs.” Mami pointed discreetly as the choir began filing in and taking their place on the right side. Urs looked over as he stood waiting for the rest to fill the row so they could sit down in unison. He smiled and blinky-winked when his eyes found Susanna and she smiled back. He looked so handsome in his dark blue robe and she could hardly wait for his Silent Night solo. For some reason, even as a little girl she had wanted to hear it sung in German at midnight Mass.

Tonight her dream would come true and then some ---the song sung by Urs, the best Christmas present ever. And it was. She didn’t even try to hide the tears streaming down her face as his pure, sweet voice rang out. This must surely be what heavenly angels sounded like on that first Christmas.

Her eyes still glistened in the frosty snowflaked night as they walked to the car, mitten in glove. “Urs, it was….”

“I know. It takes you back there doesn’t it.” he said softly as they looked up at the falling flakes. All Susanna could manage was a nod as their arms slipped around each other tightly and they walked on.

********************************

“I see you got the twin memo.” Urs commented drily with a smile when he saw what she was wearing.

“Urs, do you think Mami was trying to tell us something?” Susanna giggled, softly however, since they were staying in Urs’ old room. She had just come out of the bathroom wearing a long flannel gown covering her feet and her hands, all but the last knuckle. Urs was already in bed, but wearing only the bottoms of his flannel Christmas present they’d opened before going to church.

“She was either trying to make sure we stayed warm or reminding us that sometimes you have to search for things you want.” he said with a crinkly grin as he held the covers open for her to slide in beside him.

“And am I worth searching for?” Susanna asked.

Urs got a devilish grin on his face, held up his hands and started wiggling his fingers making Susanna dissolve in giggles as they came closer and closer and…. then he suddenly reached under her pillow and pulled out an envelope.

“What this? Why it has your name on it! Those silly-nosed elves must have delivered it while we were gone. After all it is officially Christmas now you know.” Urs consulted his watch on the nightstand just to be sure.

“Urs what did you do? I thought we’d given out all the gifts already.”

“Well if you don’t want it I’ll just take it back then.” he pretended to grab for it and missed conveniently as his hand fell over her chest and he found something just the right size.

“Oh no you don’t”, Susanna held the envelope out of his reach, “and stop trying to distract me.” she added without much conviction.

“Well open it then. Let’s see what your loving husband, that’s me, gave his lovely, amazing wife, that’s you, on their first married Christmas morning.” Urs smugged.

Susanna opened it, completely bypassed the squealing, flying hug stage and went straight into puppy dog attack mode, complete with happy tears, thank you’s and other endearments too numerous to mention. She was very careful, however, not to lose her grip on the two airplane tickets and their intinerary. Urs the Unforgetting had lived up to his name. They would celebrate New Years’ in Vienna in their same room at the Sacher.

“A….Urs? I think Mami was right about the flannel. I think I just found something I want.” Susanna whispered as she kissed Urs’ ear.

“So have I.” growled Urs as he lifted the hem of Susanna’s flannel gown. “Wery much.”

Chapter 149
Vienna and More

“Oh what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh!” Susanna sang at the top of her lungs as Urs turned the sleigh around and headed back toward Dieter’s barn.

Urs watched her catching snowflakes on her tongue and laughed. Then of course he had to copy her. Her enthusiasm was infectious.

“Urs this has been the most glorious trip. It means so much to me. There’s no way I can thank you enough.” She gave him a frosty kiss as the snow fell and melted on their lips.

“I’m sure I’ll think of some little reward you might give me when we get back to the hotel.” He grinned with a last kiss as he turned the horses in the direction of the barn.

“Urs, I’m being serious here. Dar once told me there were no do-overs in life but this has been so close it’s scary. I mean staying in the same room at the the hotel, going to coffeehouse, the museums, the concerts and now the sleigh ride.”

“Well I hope we don’t have a do-over where I get a cold and you try to kill me with your cures,” he laughed, “and we’re having a quiet romantic dinner alone tomorrow night instead of going to the Ball. You don’t mind do you? I know you said you didn’t but…”

“Urs, if I wanted to go to the Ball I’d have said so. A very caring and loving person taught me to do that. Besides, our Ball was so perfect I wouldn’t want to tempt fate again. It was beautiful enough to last a lifetime, especially since the Princess did marry the Prince and live happily ever after.” she declared, testing his stuffing as he helped her out of the sleigh.

**************************

“Are you sure you don’t want me to come shopping with you?” Urs asked as they finished breakfast in their sitting room.

“No, thanks. I’m just going to pick up a few things for us to celebrate with in the room tonight, streamers, maybe some balloons.” Susanna said as she headed back to the bedroom to get her purse.

“No sparklers!” Urs called into the bedroom.

“Yes, Bag Boy, I know. Besides, we’ll have our own fireworks tonight, especially when I get done with my chocolate treatment!” she said with a wink as she kissed him goodbye.

************************************

They dressed formally for dinner even though they were dining in their room. Tonight they only wanted to be with each other, no raucous crowds, no sumptious banquet, no lively bands. And after their romantic, candlelit dinner, they had danced, not the flowing Viennese waltz, although they had practiced their footwork for a few circuits around the room a few days ago. The music was decidedly slow, with sensual vocals, and perfectly timed to bring them to the point where they looked at each other, smiled, and said, “Why dance?”

They had slowly undressed each other, drawing out the sensations, then moved on to the shower awakening responses as slippery hands glided over each other, and then rubbed and patted and blotted each other dry with their bodies.

Just as that long ago New Year’s Eve, Susanna had taken Urs hand, but this year it was with the awakened confidence and sure love of a wife for her husband.

He settled her back on the bed and followed her down in one lithe motion. His wide, sensual mouth drifted down on hers like a caress. As their kiss deepened, the hot, hungry taste of him intoxicated her. Suddenly she wanted him more than she thought possible as her passionate response swept them away to another place.

Urs lifted her limp fingers to his mouth and kissed them. “That was magical.” Susanna’s heart still raced as she lay back on the pillows smiling, watching him. A dreamy weakness had invaded her entire body.

“Yes, Bag Boy, it was. So special to end the old year….and begin the new! Are those St. Stephens bells? What time is it? That must be Pummerin starting to ring in the New Year. Hurry Urs let’s go look!” Susanna, suddenly revived, snatched the duvet and hurried to the window to look out at the fireworks that had just started as the bell continued to toll.

Urs hurried to join her and wrapped them both snugly as they stood with their arms around each other, watching the old year explode in a glorious send-off and the New Year begin in a blaze of light.

“Isn’t it beautiful, Urs?” Susanna exclaimed as the fireworks illuminated the faces of the two lovers as they kissed hello to the New Year.

“You are beautiful, my Susanna. Happy New Year. Welcome to the beginning of our first whole year of being married. I promise to love you more each day.” His fingers and eyes traced her face as if seeing it for the very first time.

“Urs, you are my life. Happy New Year. I have never loved you more than tonight, on this special night, the beginning of a new year as your wife. I promise to give you more surprises every day.” Susanna smiled smugly.

“Why don’t you go back to bed and I’ll be there in a minute. I just need to get a little something I have for you.” Susanna urged as she uncurled herself from the duvet and put on her robe.

“Susanna I don’t need any more presents. We’ve just had Christmas…….unless it’s somethings delicious like chocolate?” he hinted hopefully.

“I think you just might like this even more than chocolate.” she called confidently from the other room.

Susanna returned carrying her black hat, minus the magic wand and knelt on the bed facing him.

Urs smiled as he thought of all the countless times she’d passed him the hat with goodies in it, Boozy Worcester Apples, brownies, cookies, one time even taffy apples.
Yes! I bet it’s something from that wonderful shop where we watched them make all those delicious confections.

“Where did you get that, Houdini? I know you didn’t bring it from home. Is that what you went shopping for?”

“Well, not exactly. It’s a spare one I borrowed from the doorman. I need to return it first thing tomorrow morning. I don’t have a magic wand so you’ll just have to use your imagination. Here goes. Abracadabra!” she said as she moved her hand in a circle over the hat three times.

Then she held it out to Urs. He took it and set it in his lap. When he reached in, his hands took out three sealed plastic bags, each with a home pregnancy test, each with two pink lines in the window.

He gulped, looked at the bags, then looked again at Susanna and let out a whoop of joy. “Houdini, we’re pregnant? Really? Are you sure?” Then hat and bags disappeared as Urs performed his first flying hug ever and tested Susanna’s stuffing to boot. Her face was attacked by Urs’ hungry litter of puppy kisses, ending with a full grown St. Bernard who thought she just might need the kiss of life.

The bouncing hugs and teary kisses lasted several minutes, then the enormity of it began to sink in, as Urs overthought again.

He pulled Susanna in tightly to snuggle, retreived the hat from the floor where it had been tossed and looked at the three bags sitting on his lap. After another look at Susanna in wonder he said in a weak voice, “But Susanna, triplets?”

“No you silly Swiss wombat! I did the test three times to be sure. It still could be wrong but I don’t think so. When we get home I’ll go to the doctor to see for sure. But if we are won’t this be the best New Year ever?” she squealed as she threw her arms around his neck.

“The very best, Houdini. It will be a magical.”

*******************************

And it was a most magical year for sure. Susanna was indeed pregnant and the baby was due around September 1st, just in time for their first anniversary.

If Susanna thought Urs with a computer bookmarked with WebMD was bad, Urs with a baby book was a terror. Finally just like the wood rasps he was limited to only two. In true Susanna form she did not have morning sickness, that would have been way too early for her. No, she had evening sickness, well not really sickness. It was just that she couldn’t stand the smell of any meat cooking in the evening. Fortunately as we know, Urs was great at cooking breakfast so that’s what they had when he was around. That worked out well, also, because the second tour was over and he was able to be home during her last month.

******************************

To his personal chagrin, their baby decided to make a tardy appearance on September 8th, a week past Susanna’s due date. Now if Susanna had been Swiss….His private embarrassment was somewhat lessened, however, by the fact that the baby was born just after 7 in the morning. At least Urs’ early morning gene had been passed on, or so Susanna let him believe.

Susanna’s labor was well advanced when they arrived around 5:30am and as soon as Urs joined her he turned on the special music they’d selected and continued the breathing and focusing methods they’d practiced together. There was only one brief hitch when Susanna’s was in the transition stage. Urs decided to add the soothing sound of his voice by reading to her.

To his credit Urs had blanched only once when Susanna asked him rather forcefully to go to……well to leave, which he did without a word, tucking his hair behind his ear and his book under his arm. The next few minutes in the hall allowed him the opportunity to rethink his choice of reading matter to help her maintain an aura of calmness during labor. Susanna nearing the end of transition most certainly had not been receptive to Having a Baby Can Be Fun. He would not make that mistake a second time…..if there was a second time that is.

Just then the nurse arrived. It was time. With a cautious smile and a brave face he squared his shoulders and returned from the maternity equivalent of Australia. Today his wife was the one onstage, leaning on him, concentrating on his breathing instructions, grasping his strong shoulders, hearing his words of praise and encouragement whispered in a calm, singsong cadence. He was the audience of one, giving the applause, the bravos, the kisses, as Susanna gave the most magical performance of all, giving birth to their child.

Urs barely had time to position himself behind her when they saw the head…shoulders…and out into the world with a loud protesting cry slipped their child, the creation of their love, Gabriel Christian Buhler, their son.

“Thank you Houdini. He’s beautiful. It’s a boy! Woo hoo!” Urs beamed and squinched happy tears as he kissed Susanna.

“He’s so perfect. He’s got your hair for sure. Just look at all of it. He practically needs a haircut. Happy Birthday, Gabriel. I’m your mommy.” Susanna said in awe as the doctor held him up.

His airways were suctioned and as he was plopped onto his mother’s chest, Urs noticed with a grin that his squirming little mouth already seemed to be seeking his mother’s breast. Susanna mentally commented, ‘Like father, like son.’ Then Urs cut the cord, and their son physically became his own separate being as his amazed parents gazed in thankful wonder at this miracle of life they had created with their love.

“And those lungs. Have you ever heard such a wonderful sound?” Susanna sighed through happy tears as she caressed her newborn.

“Countertenor I think.” Urs said proudly after an especially loud protest.

Gabriel was taken away to be weighed, foot printed, cleaned, swaddled and then given back into the loving arms of his parents. To her dying day Susanna would always remember the ecstatic look on Urs’ face as he held his son for the first time.

“Hello there Gabriel. I’m your Papa.” he crooned in his soft, lilting voice. Urs knew if it were possible to die of happiness, then he would have, as he caressed the newborn softness of his little hand and felt his son grasp his finger.

“You needed only three pushes. Excellent job, Susanna, no scratches, no tears. You should have 10 children.” Dr. Ziegler beamed his encouragement.

“Did you hear that Urs? It’s not all in the wandwork.” Susanna grinned as she cuddled her son in the crook of her arm and watched Urs blush.

“I need to call Mami and Muz and tell them we have a son…..a beautiful son. I’ll be back soon. I love you…both.”

“And tell them we’re a family now….the Urs Buhler family….and we love you, Papa.

PostSubject: **EPILOGUE** TWO YEARS LATER   ~*~ Urs & The Kissing Hand~*~ BY: Sue - Page 7 EmptyThu Jul 09, 2009 8:48 pm

Epilogue
Two years later

“Vroom! Vroom!” Two dark curly-headed boys lay on the living room floor playing motorcycles. The grown-up boy’s hair was still slightly damp from a recent shower, his bare feet stuck out from snug-fitting button fly jeans, and his long-sleeved well worn red Harley shirt hugged his body.

The small boy was a replica, save for his dark brown eyes and white stockinged feet. Hazel-green eyes twinkled with love and wonder as the smaller boy laughed and copied the moves and sounds of the grown-up one, climbing on him to receive hugs, kisses, and tickles as Gabriel and his Papa fell deeper in love with each other.

Urs left his son happily riding over, under, and between the road he’d made from building blocks and prowled out to the kitchen to wrap his arms around Susanna, three months pregnant with the second of their less than 20 children.

“Mmmm it feels so good to be home. I feel almost human again after my shower, but I was lonely. I think maybe I missed a few spots. I’ll probably need another one later tonight. Are you interested?” Susanna could feel him smiling into her ear.

“Always, Bag Boy. Which one did you use?” she turned around for a kiss after she stirred the onions she was frying.

“Ours of course! The other ones are just for emergencies.” Urs explained as if this were common knowledge in the Buhler household.

“Speaking of emergencies, I’ve missed your hugs so much. It really seemed long this time you know.” Susanna wrapped her arms around Urs’ back as far as they would go, considering her bump, as he did the same.

“My Houdini, I’m impressed. You seem a lot ‘bumpier’ than when I left.” Urs stepped back a bit and gently outlined her bump with his hands.

“I know. I think this pregnancy will be really different from the last one. Just look at me already.” Susanna sighed as she looked up at Urs.

“Maybe this little one will just be wery …..how do you say it….robust.” replied Urs the Tactful.

“You mean like trying out for the rugby team? Well I guess that’s one way to impress the boys….beat them at arm wrestling.” Susanna laughed with an eye roll/head shake.

“And just how do you know it will be a girl?”

“First because Urslette sounds like a girl and second I need at least one to be a girl so I don’t keep getting outvoted around here.” Susanna said matter-of-factly.

“I really wish you wouldn’t keep calling her….I mean the baby an Urslette. It sounds like she’s from outer space or something. What if Gabriel goes to preschool and tells everyone his mother is having an Urslette?”

“Urs, Gabriel is not even two years old. If I’m pregnant when he goes to preschool, it had better be with a different Urslette. Even elephants aren’t pregnant that long. Give me a break. Besides, Urslette sounds cute, like a little baby Urs.”

When you know you can’t win you do the next best thing, change the subject, which Urs did.

“So what’s for breakfast tonight, Houdini?” Urs’ litter of puppy dog kisses began attacking Susanna’s neck.

“I’m sorry I just can’t manage a proper supper yet, Bag Boy. I thought for sure the morning sickness would be getting better by now, like with Gabriel, but it hasn’t. I’m getting very creative though. I’ve discovered that if I cook the meat in the morning I can add it to the rest of the meal at night and it doesn’t bother me. Good huh? So tonight it’s Rosti with sausage!”

“You know that’s one of my favorites. You haven’t grated the cheese yet have you?”

Susanna gave him ‘the look’ as he headed to the drawer for his favorite rasp.

***********************

“I think we need a dog, Susanna.” Urs decided as he took in the fall out of Rosti, peas and tiny cubes of carrots under Gabriel’s high chair.

“Sorry Urs, but I refuse to potty train more than one living creature at a time and Gabriel and I are just about there now. I’m not going to have him picking up bad habits from puppies. Once he’s got his act together we can talk puppies or rather puppy, singular,” Susanna declared as she showed she hadn’t lost her teacher voice.

Urs lifted the highchair off of the sheet of plastic and cleaned up the spilled food while Susanna cleaned up the food spiller.

“Here let me take him for a while. C’mon Gabriel, let’s get out of Mommy’s kitchen. Maybe when she’s finished she’ll give us a nice treat.” Urs set Gabriel down as both boys chattered away in search of their toys.

******************************

Susana had taken to keeping her camera handy, not only to send the latest pictures to Urs when they were apart, but also to record the almost daily changes in Gabriel. Well, maybe she was exaggerating just a bit, but mothers were entitled after all.

As she finished up in the kitchen, she peeked in to see what her boys were up to and quietly picked up the camera. Gabriel was winding down. Urs held him in the comfortable, secure nest of his lap. The two curly heads almost touched as Gabriel leaned back against Urs shoulder and Urs bent his head to read to him.

His Papa’s soft, singsong cadence had almost lulled him to sleep, but his droopy eyes still looked at the pictures. Occasionally a pudgy little finger would shoot out to point and comment in what Urs had come to call Gabrielese, a language of real, unreal, and soon to be real words.

Then Urs took his little hand. Gabriel held his palm open as far as possible the way little children do and brought it up to Urs’ face. His eyes followed his Papa as he placed a kiss on his palm and sealed his fingers shut. Then Urs opened his palm and moved it closer to Gabriel. Again in childlike fashion, Gabriel bent his body over to kiss the larger palm.

Susanna set the camera down and looked at Urs with eyes that took a picture of that moment and stored it in her heart. How much my life has changed because of you. You are as much a part of me now as the air I breathe and the dreams I nurture for our children, born and unborn and yet to be. I look into your eyes and see my future there.

Urs caught her glistening eyes and held them with his own. When things are changing all around me and my world seems to move too fast I know you’ll be right beside me, loving me. I feel your love, deep, total, and enduring, a love I can count on without ever having to wonder. Your love is the one thing I know will never change.

Urs shifted Gabriel into one arm and opened the other to her as they walked upstairs. He leaned over and kissed her temple. “I’ll take care of him. I’ll be there soon.”

“I’ll be waiting.” Susanna smiled and tiptoed up to kiss him.

Susanna wore her white robe, as she padded into Gabriel’s room. She had heard the both of them jabbering and talking as they brushed their teeth and Urs changed him into his jammies. Now only Urs’ voice could be heard as he crooned the final words of a lullaby in German to his sleeping son. Then Urs and Susanna kissed their little boy goodnight and tiptoed out.

Urs sat down on the bed, pulled HIM off, and undid his top button. “Come here little mother. I need you close.”

Susanna smiled at her name as Urs slowly opened her robe and laid his cheek on her bump. “Goodnight little Urslette. Sleep well.” he said softly with a kiss, then looked up to meet Susanna’s smile.

“Urs, let’s not tell our children how to live. Let’s just live and let them watch us.”

“I think that is a wonderful idea, my Susanna.” Urs agreed as he lowered her onto the bed for his waiting kiss. If any children had been watching they’d have known immediately how deeply these two people loved each other.

*****************************

“Bag Boy?”

“Um, Houdini.”

“I think we forgot something.”

“Like how to breathe?” Urs grinned and held his hand over his still pounding heart.

“No, you silly Swiss wombat, like our shower…..” Susanna began,

“….Houdini, I know you’re magical bu…” Urs cut in.

“……that can wait until morning but what about dessert?” she finished.

“Oh…….well I think I could manage some of that.” Urs suddenly found he wasn’t too breathless to scoot himself up to a semi-sitting position against the headboard.

“I really hope so, Bag Boy. I’ll be right back.” Susanna slipped out of bed, drew on her robe and padded downstairs.

Let’s see now. I can’t remember any baking smells when I came in, but then all I could think about was seeing Susanna and Gabriel. Probably something chocolate though especially since it’s my first night back.

Just then Susanna came in carrying the magician’s hat. Urs looked at her tenderly as he remembered the New Years Eve the hat had carried the news that she was pregnant. How special that was!

“Bag Boy, I have a little surprise for you.” Now I don’t want you to worry a bit, everything’s fine but……”

Urs looked at the hat she held and then back at Susanna. WORRY! BUT! Where was a baby book when you needed one?

“Whatever it is you can tell me. We’ll get a specialist. Everything will be fine Houdini. I’ll….”

“BAG BOY HUSH!” Susanna smacked her magic wand against the rim of the hat causing Urs to jump and close his mouth.

”Abracadabra” Susanna handed Urs the hat. He looked in and pulled out a soft, white stuffed bunny and set it on the bed. Then he pulled out another soft, white stuffed bunny. Then he looked at Susanna’s bump and had his ‘aha’ moment.
“BABIES!!!! Two babies! We’re having twins?” Urs looked at the teacher just to be sure he’d answered correctly. The teacher nodded. Give the student a gold star!

“Houdini, I love you so wery much. I don’t know how you do it.” Urs smiled in dazed wonder as their hands met and gently covered her bump. Then he folded her into his arms and just held her.

“I’m so excited, Bag Boy and I love you and our babies more than I can say.” Susanna bubbled as she leaned back to meet his kiss.

Urs’ tender gaze was filled with love as he smoothed her hair back and became serious. “What we have together is something wonderful and precious and rare. You’re magical Houdini.”

“No Bag Boy. Together WE’RE magical, and they were.
