*****CHAPTER 1 *****

JANUARY 2000

“Krissy, you home?” David shouted, as he closed the door to the apartment that he shared with Kristina. He dropped his bags on the floor, kicked off his shoes and collapsed on the couch.

David and Kristina had been seeing each other for 8 months. They met after David had been looking for a new booking agent and a friend had recommended Kristina to him. They arranged to meet and discuss what sort of work David was looking for, but they had got on so well that by the end of the evening Kristina was David’s new booking agent and David had asked her out on a date. Kristina had always made it a rule never to see clients outside work but there was something about David that had made her break her rule. She couldn’t resist his boyish charms, his big grin and his ability to make her laugh no matter how tired or low she was feeling.

As soon as Kristina heard David’s voice she closed her laptop and got up from her desk. She smiled as she walked in to the lounge and could see his spiked hair over the top of the couch. She quietly walked up behind him and slid her hands down over his chest.

“Hi hun, how was the flight?” she asked, kissing him on the cheek.

“Don’t ask,” he replied, looking up at her and sliding a hand around the back of her neck. “The food was the same as always; inedible. I had some annoying little kid sitting behind me who wouldn’t stop kicking the back of my seat. The guy next to me insisted on talking throughout the whole flight. I was so tired all I wanted to do was sleep.”

“Oh I’m sorry David,” she said, leaning further over the couch as she hugged him, pleased at having him home again. “But apart from that how was your trip? How was the audition? Did they say when they‘d be in touch?”

David had spent the last three days in Milan, Italy after Kristina had managed to get him an audition with the Australian Opera for the role of Tony in West Side Story. If he got the part he would be performing at the world famous ‘La Scala‘. Both of them were nervous; if he got this part it could mean big things for both their careers. David would be able to chose the roles he wanted rather than just take whatever work was available and Kristina would be able to expand her business.

“The audition went perfectly! I don‘t think I‘ve ever performed that well in my whole career.” David replied, with a huge smile on his face. “But I couldn’t eat a thing when I first got up, I was that nervous.”

“That’s not like you,” Kristina said, playfully rubbing her hand on his tummy. “You usually eat twice as much when you’re doing auditions.”

“Yes, but this one’s different.” David said, quietly. “If I get this role it could really do things for my career.”

“I know, I know.” Kristina replied, kissing his neck. “I’ve got everything crossed for you. I know how much this means to you. So come on, when will you know if you‘re going to be the next Tony?”

“They said they’d be in touch as soon as they’d made a decision.” he replied, leaning his head back on the couch. “But I’m guessing they’ll call you before they call me, seeing as you‘re my agent. And the trip was fine.” David added, looking up at Kristina. “But I missed you.”

“And I missed you too.” she replied, as she walked around to the front of the couch to sit down next to David. “I can’t believe you were only gone three days. It felt a lot longer. Hey!” Kristina screamed, as David grabbed her by the waist and pulled her on to his lap. “Watch it mister or I’ll have to show you some new moves I’ve learnt.”

“Oh really?” David said, pulling her closer to him. “And what moves are these? Can we use them in the bedroom?” he asked with a sly grin on his face.

“Mr Miller!” Kristina said, acting surprised. “I’m shocked you could think such a thing. I’m not that kind of woman.”

“Since when?” David asked, looking at Kristina. “That’s the only reason I’m with you. Ouch that hurt!” David said, laughing as Kristina slapped him on the arm.

“The only reason?” Kristina asked, pouting at David.

“Well, that and the fact that I love you,” David replied, before he gently kissed her.

“And I love you too.” Kristina said, caressing his cheek. “So are you still tired?” Kristina asked, her eyes sparkling. “Or did you want to do something?”

“Yes I’m tired.” he said, as he stretched and put his hands behind his head. “But what exactly did you have in mind?” David asked, grinning when he noticed the look on Kristina’s face.

“Oh not much.” she said, innocently. “I thought maybe we could play on the Playstation for a couple of hours, I could show you some of those new moves I was talking about. Then I could whoop your butt at every single game. Now that’s something I’ve missed doing.” she said, giggling.

“Not every single game.” David exclaimed. “I can still beat you at Streetfighter. And besides, that’s yours and my little secret.” David said, as he gently pushed Kristina off his lap and stood up. “I can’t have the rest of the guys knowing that a woman, my own girlfriend, can beat me on the Playstation. I‘d never hear the end of it.”

“Don’t worry honey.” Kristina said, running her fingers through his hair. “I know how you like to play the big computer whiz in front of your friends. I’m not going to spoil your fun.”

“How about we have some fun of our own?” David asked, as he picked her up and carried her towards the bedroom.

“I thought you were tired.” Kristina said, as she leant down and opened the bedroom door for David.

“I’m not that tired.” David said, as he entered the bedroom and kicked the door shut.

***** CHAPTER 2 *****

It was almost midnight and Sebastien was staring out of his hotel window, looking down in to the deserted streets of Paris. He had only 9 hours left until he had to be at the offices of Liberty Rock Studios and he was no where near ready for the meeting. He had been asked to write several songs for a well known pop artist, Danny Mitchell, who was hoping to release a solo album after splitting up from his band. The two men had been introduced to each other and had a long meeting about the style of music and what Danny’s hopes for the album were. To say he was surprised when Danny had specifically asked for him to write the songs was putting it mildly. But he gladly accepted the offer and started writing the songs immediately. That was 6 weeks ago but now he was stuck on this last song. If he couldn’t write this last song it might mean delaying the release of the album or they might even decide to use a song from another song writer. They were expecting all the songs to be completed by tomorrow morning as Danny was only in Paris for a week; and in that time Danny wanted to be able to listen to all the songs and make any necessary changes before he returned to Paris the following month to record them.

Sebastien had written songs for lots of artists, some famous and some not so well known. But it wasn’t the fact that Danny was an extremely famous American artist that was stopping him from writing. His best friend had called him earlier that morning and told him something which he couldn’t quite believe. He wouldn’t be able to do anything about it until he was back home, but he knew that he had to finish his work here first. Which meant staying in Paris for another day or two, depending on how things went tomorrow morning. Somehow he had to put it to the back of his mind and concentrate on writing. But it was impossible. He decided to take a break and headed downstairs to the hotel bar.

Sebastien stepped out of the elevator and made his way across the lobby, hearing the faint sound of a piano being played. As he approached the doorway he heard a female voice, singing. Sebastien approached the bar, sat down on one of the stools and asked the barman for a drink. While he was waiting, Sebastien looked around the bar noticing that there was only him and one other gentleman sitting in the far corner. Sebastien couldn’t see a piano and so when the barman returned with his beer, he asked where the noise was coming from.

“Just through there, Sir.” he replied, pointing to the far end of the bar. Sebastien paid for his drink, thanked the barman and made his way round to where the barman had pointed. There was a small archway which led in to a larger room filled with tables and chairs, with a piano placed in the centre. And that’s when Sebastien saw her; a young woman with long dark hair dressed in a red sweater and a black knee length skirt. Sebastien stood there for several minutes, listening to the young woman before slowly walking toward her and standing beside her.

The woman sensed someone standing next to her and looked round at Sebastien

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to disturb you,” Sebastien said, as he noticed her staring up at him. “I wondered where the music was coming from. Please, don’t stop on my account.”

“Don’t worry,” she replied, blushing slightly. “I should be leaving now anyway, it must be getting late.”

Sebastien looked at his watch, saying “It’s a little after midnight. Was that a Celine Dion song you were singing?”

“Yes, ‘Je Chanterai’. she answered, bending down to pick up her bag from the floor, “It’s one of my favourites.”

“The accent, are you American?” Sebastien asked, before taking a sip of his beer.

“Yes.” she replied. “And am I right in saying you’re French?”

“Oui.” Sebastien said, giving her a huge grin as he sat down next to her on the piano stool. “But can I ask, why are you down here on your own at this time of night? Or are you here with someone?”

The young woman looked back at the piano and carefully closed the lid.

“I’m sorry, but I really need to go.” she said, avoiding his gaze and getting up from the stool. “It was nice to meet you.”

“But wait.” Sebastien said, gently taking hold of her arm. “I don’t even know your name.”

“Do you need to know my name?” she asked, wincing as Sebastien held her arm.

“I don’t need to.” Sebastien replied, loosening his grip on her arm as soon when he noticed the expression on her face. “But I was hoping to buy you a drink.”

“Why would you want to do that?” the young woman asked warily. “You don’t even know me.”

“I’m sorry, I was trying to be polite.” Sebastien replied, puzzled by the woman’s evasiveness. “I thought you might like some company. It seems a shame that a lovely looking lady like yourself should be here on your own.”

“You‘re probably safer if you keep away from me.” she said, turning away from Sebastien. “Excuse me, I really should go now.”

Sebastien was growing more and more intrigued by this woman, who was constantly avoiding his questions and now had him thinking about her last statement. How on earth could this woman possibly be dangerous? She seemed like such a kind and fragile woman, albeit somewhat scared. He couldn‘t possibly imagine why she would say such a thing. “My name is Sebastien,” he said, quickly following her to the doorway. “Won’t you please just tell me your name?” he added. “What harm can it do?”

She paused for a second before answering. “My name is Katy. Katy Flynn.”

Sebastien held his hand out, and smiled. “Goodnight Katy.”

“Goodnight Sebastien,” she replied, taking his hand, before turning and walking away.

Sebastien took another sip of his beer and watched her walk across the lobby. He had just turned around and was about to head back to the bar when he heard the receptionist call out.

“Miss Sanders!”

Sebastien looked back to see Katy walking over to the reception desk.

Sanders? What happened to Flynn? Sebastien thought to himself. He didn’t hear what was said, but they exchanged a few words before the receptionist handed her an envelope. Katy took the envelope and made her way to the elevator. Sebastien sat back down at the bar and finished his beer, before making his way back up to his room a short time later. He was beginning to wish he’d stayed up in his room. His mind was no longer distracted by the phone call from his friend earlier, but also by the fact that Katy, if that was her real name, had lied to him. What was she hiding?

***** CHAPTER 3 *****

Abigail looked out from the elevator doors to check no one was about, before stepping out and walking the short distance to her hotel room. When Sebastien had started asking her questions she was worried that Brian, or one of his so called friends, had found her. But she hadn’t told anyone where she was going. Actually that wasn’t strictly true; there was one person she had told, but she trusted him with her life, literally. Abigail took out the key card from her bag and opened the door. As soon as she was inside and had closed the door, she breathed a sigh of relief. She still wasn’t used to having to socialise and deal with people again. She put her bag down on the table, before sitting down at the desk and switching on her laptop. She had to let Carlos know what had just happened in the bar. While she was waiting for the laptop to start up Abigail thought about the past few months and how far she had come with the help of Carlos.

Abigail had always had a beautiful voice and had sung from a young age. For as long as she could remember, she had always dreamt of becoming a singer, but her parents had always tried to convince her to follow a safer career path; refusing to fund any kind of study in music. But Abigail was determined to follow her dream and had written to everybody she could think of in the hope of being offered an audition, sending them copies of her recordings.

After months of trying, Abigail was contacted by the world famous talent scout, Giles Cornell. He was so impressed by her singing ability that he had personally offered to pay for a place for her at the Paris Conservatory of Music. But it meant leaving her home in America and moving to France. She accepted the offer and so two years ago she had left her family in New York and moved to Paris. At long last she would be able to prove to her parents that she was capable of having a career in music; that was until she had met Brian.

When she wasn’t studying, Abigail had a part time job working as waitress in a small bistro. Her parents sent her money, but only a small amount. Her sister also sent money when she could, but most of her money was invested in the new business she was starting up. So when things started to change between her and Brian she had no way of leaving.

She believed she had the perfect relationship with Brian. She had met him through Josie, a friend at work. It was Josie’s birthday and she had invited some friends from the office and some friends from outside work to a local bar for a birthday drink. That’s when she first met him. He had offered to buy her a drink and they had spent most of the evening chatting to each other.

The following day Josie had asked her if she could give her phone number to Brian as he wanted to see if she’d like to go out for a meal sometime. They had dated for a few months, before he had asked her to move in with him. Everything was fine to start with but then things started going down hill. Arguments would start over the smallest things and it always seemed to be her fault. Abigail hated the arguing and kept quiet, hoping that would be the end of it. But Brian would always find something to fight about. It was almost as if he enjoyed belittling her.

All relationships have their ups and downs, but Abigail stupidly assumed her and Brian were just going through a rough patch. Looking back, it was obvious what Brian was. Why hadn’t she left him the moment he first hit her. At first it was mental abuse. The usual things that an abusive man would say; you’re useless, you’re putting on weight, you can’t look after yourself you need me. Which was true. She was close to losing both her job and her place at the college after the physical abuse had started; as she was taking too much time off work and not attending enough classes. This was mainly due to the fact that she had bruises which were visible and Brian had refused to let her out of the house. But in the end Brian had forced her to quit her job and tell the Conservatory she was leaving. She then had no income and had to rely on Brian completely. Brian gave her a weekly allowance which she was to spend on food and bills for the house and made her produce receipts for everything.

In the end she was forced to selling a few of her personal belongings. Then it was little things that she had found in the attic when tidying up; books, old ornaments, clothes, anything that she knew Brian wouldn’t miss. But with the little money she saved she spent an hour each week at a small internet café. She wanted to see what help was available to women in her position. That was when she had met ‘Mr_Spain’ in the chat room. She had never intended to talk in a chat room before, but she had somehow managed to inadvertently click on an advert which redirected her to the website. She registered with the site and had started chatting. She found it exciting to be able to talk to people again. For the past year she had been confined to the house, except to do shopping; she had no outside contact and only limited contact with her family.

Her sister had suspected that something was wrong but Abigail had made her promise her not to mention anything to their parents and that she would deal with it. She didn’t want to leave Brian, because a small part of her did still feel something for him and hoped that he would change back to the man she once knew. But the main reason she stayed was out of fear. She couldn’t see any way of leaving him and Brian knew it. She remembers vividly the look on his face when he made his threats and shuddered just thinking about it.

“If you tell anyone what goes on in this house, you’ll regret it. And do you really think anyone will believe you? You’re lucky to have me. And don’t even think about leaving me, because you could never cope without me. And if you’re ever stupid enough to leave I’ll find you. I’ll track you down and find you even if it takes years, and then I’ll kill you. You’ll never be able to live in peace, never knowing when it will happen.”

Mr_Spain had started up a conversation with Abigail the first time she had signed in to the chat room. She later found out that his real name was Carlos, he was Spanish and the fact that he was almost ten years older than her didn’t bother her. She had grown to trust him, even though she had never met him and technically was still a stranger to her.

Their chats soon went to and fro between private messages and before she knew it she had told him everything about Brian and how she was stuck in the relationship with no way of escaping. Carlos was a lifeline to her and had been understanding and supportive through the last few months. She had slowly built up her confidence again and didn’t believe all the insults that Brian threw at her. But she still had to deal with his violent side. Over the months Carlos and Abigail had built up a strong relationship, and Brian had never suspected a thing.

But then that morning, unknown to Abigail, Brian had followed her into town. She had to do the shopping first, keeping all the receipts as usual. She then collected one of Brian’s suits from the dry cleaners before making her way to the small internet café in the centre of town. She had only been signed in to the chat room for a few minutes when Brian sat down next to her. Panic flooded her mind as she turned to see him sitting beside her.

“It looks like someone has been keeping secrets from me, doesn’t it?” he said, sneering at her. “I think you and I should go home and have a talk. You know how much I hate being made to look a fool.”

Abigail nervously got up from her seat and picked up her bags as Brian took a hold of her arm, gripping it tightly as he led her out of the café. As they stepped out on to the street Brian held her arm even tighter, keeping her close to him as they made their way through the hoards of shoppers. Abigail was struggling to keep up with him when a boy on a bicycle went racing past her, knocking the bags out of her hand.

“You stupid woman, can’t you do something as simple as holding some bags,“ he spat as he watched Abigail struggling to pick the bags up with one hand, while he still gripped her other arm. After watching her drop them again, he bent down and grabbed the bags and headed off down the street, pulling her along behind him. Abigail could feel her arm starting to go numb from where Brian was squeezing it, almost cutting off the circulation.

She had to get away from him but how? She knew if she got back to the house he would use his fists on her. But while she was out in public, in a crowded area she still had a chance to get away. Brian decided to take a short cut through one of the stores which would bring them out in to the rear of the store and in to a less busier part of town.

As they made their way through the store, Abigail noticed a security at the other end of the store, standing by the doorway. Without giving it a second thought she grabbed a CD from one of the shelves and quickly dropped it in to one of the bags that Brian was carrying before anyone noticed. Abigail could feel her pulse racing as they got closer to the exit. As soon as they walked through the barriers the alarms went off and the nearby security guard ran over to them, placing a hand on Brian’s shoulder; asking him “Sir, have you bought anything from this store?”

Brian had spun round at the security guard, and Abigail was convinced he was going to hit him. But then another security guard a had joined them, asking Brian to come to the office so the could check his bags. Abigail had struggled to get free of Brian’s grip but he turned and dropped the bags trying to hold on to her. Security had thought Brian was trying to leave the store, so both of them grabbed him and dragged him back in to the store. He was so busy hurling abuse at the security guards that he had completely forgotten about Abigail.

At first Abigail didn’t know what to do, where could she go? She had no money and she couldn’t go back to the house, Brian had her bag which had her keys in. She ran out of the store and somehow ended up back at the internet café. Libby, a young woman who worked at the internet café, had asked if she was ok after noticing she left suddenly. Abigail didn’t explain what had happened, only that she needed to get online but didn’t have any money with her. It wasn’t a problem, as Libby knew that she’d only been there for a few minutes before leaving so told her to go ahead use the computers.

Abigail had signed back in to the chat room, hoping that Carlos was still online. Luckily for her, he was. Abigail didn’t waste any time in sending him a message briefly explaining everything that had happened. Carlos had replied immediately, telling her to go to the Hotel Bastille, which he knew was nearby. He would call ahead and book her a room there, and she was to stay there until he contacted her.

Sure enough, Carlos was true to his word. She had walked to the hotel, constantly looking around her in case Brian had somehow managed to talk his way out of the stolen CD and had come looking for her. She gave her name at the front desk and was immediately shown up to her room. It was a large luxurious bright and airy room with a window over looking the private garden to the hotel. She had a double bed, a shower and a TV and Carlos had requested a laptop be installed in her room, all paid for by him. Abigail didn’t know how much all of this was costing Carlos, and she would be eternally grateful to him; yet she had no idea how she could ever repay him.

But that’s how she came to be at the hotel. She had stayed in her room all day, waiting to hear from Carlos. She finally decided to have a look around the hotel as she assumed it would be too late for Carlos to contact her now. That’s when she had found the large music room and the piano. She couldn’t resist the temptation to play it and the barman didn’t have any objections when she asked him if it was alright. Music was like therapy to Abigail and it had managed to make her forget all the events of the day for a short while; and then the handsome Frenchman, Sebastien, had interrupted her. Abigail picked up the envelope the receptionist had given her a few minutes ago. As she opened it something fell out on to the floor; it was a key. She read the note, it was from Carlos. In the note he explained that the key was for a luggage locker in a train station where a friend had left some money for her. She was to use it to get settled until he could come to Paris and meet her. He apologised for not being able to come straight away, as he had to travel due to work commitments that were impossible to get out of. Abigail couldn’t believe how lucky she had been in finding Carlos. She signed in to the chat room and waited for Carlos to come online so she could thank him for all he had done. She was finally safe and free from Brian. But in the back of her mind, she couldn’t help but worry about the Frenchman who had been asking her so many questions.

***** CHAPTER 4 *****

Urs eased his foot off the accelerator as he pulled the car up alongside the kerb and braked, switching the ignition off. He was on his way to pick up Stephanie before heading off to the airport; but there was one more stop he had to make before leaving for America. Urs had got up early so that he could make this last visit before he had to leave Paris again. Whenever he had to leave the country Urs made sure he said goodbye to her, to tell her how much he loved her, how much he missed her, and that he’d back home soon.

Urs glanced at the bouquet of flowers laying on the passenger seat. He knew that flowers wouldn’t change what had happened, but it was all he could do, the only way he knew how to show that he still loved her and he was sorry. He reluctantly picked them up and stepped out of the car. It was still early and the sun was starting to come up, creating a haze through the grey clouds that were starting to form. The scenery was beautiful around Montmartre, with the old buildings and the small cobbled streets lined with trees. But Urs didn’t notice any of it as he walked through the large black cast iron gates of Montmartre Cemetery; his eyes to the ground as he made his way to her grave. Urs didn’t even have to think about where he was going, he knew it by heart; he had made so many visits to her grave over the last year.

Did she even know he was there? That he laid flowers on her grave and that he visited her every chance he had? That she was in his every thought, that he would do anything to bring her back? He doubted it, but he had to believe that she did. He had to believe that she knew how sorry he was for what he had done. Urs looked up in to the sky as it started to rain, he didn’t have an umbrella with him but that was the least of his worries. He pulled his collar up around his neck before kneeling down at her graveside. He gently brushed the leaves off her grave and laid the bouquet of her favourite flowers down on the ground; violets. She had always told him that every flower had a meaning and that so many men gave flowers without thinking what they really meant. Urs had asked what her favourite flower was but she refused to tell him. Instead she told him to find out the meanings to some of the flowers and choose one, and then whatever he decided on would be her favourite because it would be from him, from the heart.

Urs had spent a whole week trying to find out the names and meaning of flowers. Finally he found one that he knew would express how he felt about her, to let her know she was the only one for him. A faint smile crept across his face as he remembered how he had come home one evening, with a huge bouquet of blue violets. He didn't need to tell her the meaning behind them, she already knew; I'll always be true. He closed his eyes, remembering her gentle touch and her warm breath on his cheek as she wrapped her arms around his neck, whispering in his ear; "I'll always be true to you too."

She might be gone but she would always be his, and he would always be true to her. Urs couldn’t see himself ever loving another woman. He couldn’t go through the pain of loving someone else only to lose them.

Urs sat down on the small wooden bench nearby as his mind started to drift back to the night of the accident. They had been on their way back from an evening out with friends. It had been snowing all day but the driving conditions weren’t all that bad. The snow hadn’t even settled and there wasn’t any ice on the roads. Yet somehow they had crashed, most of it was still a blur to Urs. But every night he was woken with flashbacks of the accident. He remembered the sounds of screeching tyres, metal clashing against metal, and the sound of breaking glass as something smashed in to the side of them, sending them spinning across the road and into a ditch. He had tried to move but a searing pain in his side had prevented him. He looked across to where she was sitting, she wasn’t moving but could see a trickle of blood coming from her mouth. He called out her name, but she still didn’t move. He reach out for her hand, to try and feel for a pulse but the pain in his side had become unbearable and he blacked out. When he had finally woken up he was in hospital. The nurse had explained to him that the pain in his side was from several broken ribs, but no serious injuries. Then he had asked about her, he wanted to see her. The nurse had insisted he get some rest but Urs had refused to do anything or go anywhere until he had seen her. Eventually they had agreed to let him see her.

Urs’ heart was pounding as one of the nurses helped him to the elevator and had shown him to Intensive Care. Urs looked through the window to her room, his eyes filling with tears as he saw her body connected to monitors and machines that were helping to keep her alive. She had a bandage across her forehead and a few scratches and bruises and she looked as if she was just sleeping. Urs didn’t know why she was in ICU. The doctor had told him she had taken a serious blow to the head and that she was in a drug induced coma to relieve pressure on her brain. He had assured Urs that they were doing everything they could for her, yet during the night she had suffered a massive brain haemorrhage and died while Urs was sleeping.

Urs had been inconsolable in the weeks and months following her death. He blamed himself for the accident, as he was the one driving. But the police had informed him it was a drunk driver who had smashed into the side of them and it wasn’t his fault at all. But Urs still believed that he could have somehow avoided the speeding car.

Since she had died, his life had changed considerably, pushing friends and family away; insisting that he was fine. Throwing himself in to his work and becoming a recluse. He was burdened by guilt and overwhelming sorrow. The nights were the worst. Urs would sit in silence in the apartment they once shared together; staring at the door believing she would walk through it at any moment. But she never did. He hoped and prayed that it was all a bad dream. But it was real. He felt empty and numb without her. He had problems sleeping, no appetite, he found it hard to concentrate on anything for long, and suffered with bad mood swings, yelling and shouting at friends. But no one said anything, they knew it wasn‘t the real Urs and it was obvious he still wasn’t over her death. Sometimes Urs had wondered why it hadn’t been him that had died. Why had he survived and why had she died? She was so young. If only they hadn’t gone out that evening, if only they had stayed at home. He tried to remember the last thing he had said to her, what was the last thing she had said to him? He couldn’t remember, he tried and tried, but he couldn’t remember and it was tearing him apart. After Urs was released from hospital he had visited the site of the accident, hoping he would remember more about it, to try and get it straight in his head. But it didn’t happen, it was all still a blur.

Urs had been sitting near her graveside for an hour, lost in his thoughts when his mobile started to ring. He looked at the display; it was Stephanie. Urs let the phone carry on ringing as he put it back in his pocket and stood up. He reached down and touched the headstone as he whispered “I’ll be back soon, Aimee. I love you.”

Urs walked out of the cemetery and headed back to his car. He was in no hurry to leave Paris, but he and Stephanie had to leave for the airport. Stephanie had been nominated for an award at the famous annual Tony Awards which was being in held in New York the following night. Urs had avoided contact with most of his friends but he had grown close to Stephanie. She was a singer like himself, and he had worked with her on several projects. She knew about the accident but had never questioned him about it and didn’t treat him any differently. Other friends at work had avoided him, he suddenly became invisible when they didn’t know what to say to him. As Urs reached his car he looked back at the cemetery gates, a single tear running down his cheek. He hated leaving her, but he knew no harm could come to her now. He opened the car door and got in, leaning his head back on the headrest as more tears ran down his face. Urs wiped them away with the back of his hand before starting the ignition and driving away to collect Stephanie. The feeling of emptiness started to wash over him again as he glanced in the rear view mirror, the cemetery fading in to the distance.

***** CHAPTER 5 *****

“David are you nearly ready?” Kristina asked, banging on the bathroom door. “The taxi’s waiting and if you’re not out here in five minutes I’m leaving without you. I don’t want to be late.”

“Have you ever known me to be late?” David asked from the other side of the door. “We always get there on time.”

“No, you‘ve never been late.” Kristina replied. “And yes, you’re always on time, but one of these days something’s going to happen and then we will be late. For once I’d like to get there early.”

“Damn it, why we do have to wear these stupid things?” David mumbled to himself. “Why can’t we just wear a straight forward tie like a normal person?”

Kristina laughed to herself when she heard David struggling with his bow tie and opened the bathroom door.

“Here let me do it.” Kristina said, as she stood in front of David and fixed his tie for him.

“Wow, you look stunning.” David said, as he looked at Kristina’s reflection in the large mirror on the wall. “Has anyone told you that you have a great body?” he asked, running his hands over her hips and pulling her closer to him.

“Yes, you! All the time.” Kristina said, smiling up at him. “But stand still or I’ll have to start this all over again.”

David ran his hands down her bare back, making goose bumps appear on her skin. “Why don’t we forget about tonight? We can make some apology about how I’m sick and can’t get out of bed. Obviously you’d have to keep me company.” he added, winking at her.

“David Miller, is sex all you think about?” Kristina asked, straightening his tie up. “There’s no way we’re cancelling, this is a big night. You could meet some really important people here that could help you with your career, I don‘t want you to miss out on this. It‘s only one night, David. Then tomorrow we can do whatever you want.”

“I know.” David sighed. “But this is the first time in ages that we’ve had any time together. I just can’t believe that we have to go out on my first weekend back home.”

“But at least we ‘are’ together.” Kristina said, as she stepped back from David, to check his tie. “There, all done.”

Half an hour later and Kristina and David were still sitting in the taxi, stuck in traffic. “See I told you one day we’d be late.” Kristina said, checking her watch. “We haven’t moved in five minutes and we’ve still got a mile to go.”

“We’ll be fine.” David said, also checking his watch. “And even if we are late, it’s not the end of the world.”

“No, but it doesn’t exactly create the right impression does it?” Kristina replied, looking at the traffic ahead of them. “At this rate it would be quicker to walk.”

“Well come on then,” David said, as he grabbed Kristina’s hand. “Let’s walk.”

“What? But I’m in heels,” Kristina said, stepping out of the car. “I’m not running all the way there.”

“We don’t have to run.” David said, as he paid the taxi driver. “We’ll just walk fast.”

“Easier said than done,” Kristina mumbled. “Your legs are twice as long as mine, how am I supposed to keep up with you?“

“Maybe I should just carry you over my shoulder.” David said, grinning as he took her hand and started walking towards the venue.

Kristina looked at David saying “Don’t you even think about it. I’d die of embarrassment.”

**************************

Almost ten minutes later, after trying to walk fast in heels, wearing a long evening dress, keeping up with David and pushing through the crowds, Kristina and David finally arrived at the venue.

“I need to go the ladies.” Kristina said, looking around the lobby.

“You should’ve gone before we left.” David said, taking Kristina’s coat and handing it to the woman in the cloak room.
“I did, but then I had to wait ages for you,” Kristina said, lightly smacking him on the bum. “I just need to tidy up a bit. I must look a mess after rushing about like that.”

“You look absolutely fine darling, but look they’re over there.” David said, pointing across the room. “I’ll wait here for you.”

Kristina made her way across the crowded lobby to the ladies. She found a space in front of one of the mirrors and checked her hair. Her long blonde wavy hair was pinned up in a loose bun with a few strands hanging down to frame her face. Her cheeks were flushed from being out side in the cold but her make up looked fine. She applied a little more lipstick and perfume before checking her watch. She quickly put her things back in her purse and picked up her lipstick as she opened the door and rushed out in to the lobby. She was so busy looking at her purse as she put her lipstick away that she walked straight into someone, knocking his glasses out of his hands and dropping her purse.

“Oh my God, I’m so sorry.” Kristina said, as she bent down and picked up the glasses.

The man knelt opposite her and started to pick up Kristina’s belongings, placing them back in her purse, while Kristina looked at the gentleman’s glasses. “I think they’re okay.” she said, checking them one last time before holding them out to him. “If they’re not, then obviously I’ll pay to get them repaired…” Kristina‘s voice trailed off as the man looked up at her.

Kristina caught her breath as she looked in to the most honest looking, almond shaped hazel eyes she had ever seen. Kristina was speechless. All she could do was look into his eyes, it was almost as if she were hypnotised and couldn’t look away.

“I’m sorry.” she said again, in a faint whisper. “I wasn’t looking where I was going.”

“Don’t worry, they look fine.” the man replied, standing up as he put his glasses back on. “See, no harm done.”

Kristina sighed softly as she heard the mans warm gentle voice. She didn’t recognise the accent but it sounded European, maybe German. She felt weak at the knees, she couldn’t believe the affect this man was having on her. She’d never felt like this before, not even when she first met David. Kristina felt a huge wave of guilt wash over her for feeling like this about a complete stranger. But she couldn’t take her eyes off him, he was stunning. The hazel eyes, the thick dark brown shoulder length curls, the perfect lips, his chiselled features, the strong jaw. And the smile, he had the most amazing smile that made his eyes sparkle and little dimples appear at the corners of his mouth.

“Are you okay?” he asked, frowning slightly as he held out his hand to help her up.

“I… I’m fine.” she managed to say, as she accepted his offer of help and stood up. But in that one moment, it felt like her heart had stopped, as their hands touched for the first time. For a moment, both were silent, their eyes were firmly focused on one another, neither letting go of the other one's hand.

“I… I’m really sorry. I…” Kristina couldn’t think straight, all she could think about was how attractive this man was.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” he asked again, as they finally let go of one another‘s hand.

PostSubject: Part 2   ~ LOVE IS BLIND ~  EmptyWed Aug 12, 2009 5:07 pm

“Has anyone ever told you that you have beautiful eyes?” Kristina said, before putting her hand over her mouth. Did she really just say that out loud? She must sound like a complete idiot, either that or he would think she was trying to make a move on him.

The man started to blush and looked down at the floor.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to embarrass you.” Kristina said, also blushing. “I think I embarrassed myself more than you.”

He looked up at her. “It’s alright. You’re not the first to say it.” he said, quietly.

Kristina noticed a look of sadness take hold of his face as he said it. She couldn’t help wonder why he looked so sad. Kristina was still staring at the man, unable to look away from him.

“Did you want to sit down for a minute?” he asked, as he lightly touched her on the arm.

Kristina felt her heart pounding as he stepped closer to her, her skin tingling from where he’d touched her.

“No thank you, I’m alright honestly.” Kristina said, trying to sound in control as she straightened out her dress. “By the way, my name’s Kristina.” she said, holding out her hand. “And you are?”

“Krissy there you are! What took you so long?” David asked, as he grabbed Kristina‘s out stretched hand. “Excuse me, but we’re running a little late.” David said, as he acknowledged the man and started walking towards the hall.

“David do you have to be so rude? I was talking to someone.” she said, as she looked back at the man. He was still watching her.

“I thought you were in a hurry.” David said, slipping an arm around her waist, as they approached the doorway to the hall. “You don‘t have time to talk to strange men in the lobby.”

“He was not a strange man.” Kristina said defensively. “And I was apologising to him for walking in to him

“Okay, I was only joking.” David said, as he pulled her closer to his side. “I know the only strange man you talk to is me.”

Kristina looked up at David and saw him looking back at her with that big boyish grin on his face. “Well you said it, not me.” she replied grinning back at him.

“You’re not supposed to agree.” David said, pouting at her. “You’re supposed to say ‘Davey, you’re not in the least bit strange. You’re one of the most sensible down to earth men I’ve ever met‘.”

“My mum always told me to tell the truth.” Kristina said, casually. “And if I said that, it would be a lie. You’re not sensible, you always have your head in the clouds and you‘re definitely not a man. You‘re just a big kid.”

A smartly dressed gentleman then arrived at the door and gestured for them to follow him. David bent down and whispered into Kristina’s ear before following him. “We’ll continue this conversation when we get home.”

Kristina smiled as she looked up at David, knowing exactly what was going through his mind.

“Then I’ll show you that I might be big but I’m definitely not a kid. I‘m all man.” David added as he ran his hand down her back and gently squeezed her ass. Kristina couldn’t help giggling as she took David’s hand and let him lead the way in to the hall.

The man watched as Kristina walked away from him, hand in hand with the tall American; occasionally glancing back at him. He had to admit that Kristina, or Krissy as the American had called her, was breath-taking. He hadn’t looked at another woman since the night of the accident. Yet he couldn’t help but notice Kristina; despite the fact that she had bumped in to him and he couldn’t exactly miss her.

He hadn’t always been a shy person, but over the last year he had withdrawn from socialising and sometimes found it difficult to talk to women, especially one as beautiful as Kristina. So he surprised himself when he managed to actually keep his cool and string a sentence together. He smiled to himself when he remembered the words she had said to him; ‘has anyone ever told you that you have beautiful eyes’. He was honest with Kristina when he’d said that someone had mentioned his eyes. But only one person; his beloved Aimee. She had said that was one of his best features, among other things. He chuckled to himself as he remembered when she had shown him what she meant. But then the look of sadness returned to his face, he longed to hold her again.

Most people didn’t show much interest in him, which didn’t bother him in the slightest. He was quite content to blend in to the background, not drawing much attention to himself. The fact that he wore clothes which didn’t reflect his age, he wore glasses and his hair was a mass of curls that was out of control, probably had something to do with the fact that he wasn’t the first person you would notice in a room full of people.

“Urs, I think it’s time we went and took our seats now.” said a woman’s voice from behind him.

Urs turned around to see Stephanie. She was slim, in her early 40’s and had shoulder length curly brown hair. She looked amazing for her age. Urs held out his arm to Stephanie as they walked in the same direction as David and Kristina.

Kristina and David were busy talking to some of the other guests at their table when two more people joined them. To Kristina’s surprise it was the man she had just bumped into. She smiled at him when she noticed him look in her direction. He glanced at her briefly and returned the smile before pulling a chair out for the woman next to him. The woman looked a little older than him, maybe even in her forties but Kristina couldn’t deny the fact that she looked beautiful. She thought she recognised her from somewhere but couldn’t think where. Kristina felt a twinge of jealousy hit her as she wondered if the woman he was with was in fact his girlfriend. Who ever the woman was she was lucky to be in his company for the evening.

“Krissy? Red or white?”

Kristina turned to David, “Huh? Sorry David, what did you say?”

“I said I’m going to get us both some wine, do you want red or white?” David asked as he got up from his seat.

“Oh. Can I have white, please.” Kristina replied, before looking back to look at the man she had bumped into.

David bent down to Kristina and whispered in her ear; “What’s wrong with you? You didn’t hear a word I said.” David glanced in the direction to where Kristina was looking. “It’s rude to stare, so stop looking at that man.”

Kristina blushed as soon as she realised what David had said, and looked away. “I’m sorry babe, but he just looked so sad earlier. I can’t help but wonder why.”

“He looks fine to me,” David said, as he quickly glanced over at the man sitting opposite them. “For a moment there I thought you’d gone off me.”

“I could never go off you,” Kristina whispered as she put a hand up to his face, caressing his cheek. “You know I only have eyes for you.”

David kissed her softly on the lips before heading to the bar.

It was true, Kristina was curious as to why the man looked so sad. But what she didn’t tell David was that she also fascinated by him, his looks, his smile, the way he held himself, his voice, his eyes. She’d never given much thought to the expression ‘The eyes are the window to the soul.’ But right now, as he looked across the table at her and she looked directly in to his hazel eyes she felt complete and utter sadness overcome her. He was smiling but his eyes told a different story. She wondered if she’d ever find out what it was.

The evening went well, Stephanie had won an award and everyone at the table had congratulated her. It was only when Stephanie had been given her award that Kristina realised who she was; Stephanie van Hoff. A well known Dutch singer who had performed in numerous theatre productions in America, as well as opera.

“Do you mind if I ask Stephanie to dance?” David asked, as he leant towards Kristina. “There’s a couple of new shows that she’s involved in and seeing as she’s well known in the industry, well she might be able to put in a good word for me.”

“Of course I don’t mind, David.” Kristina replied, patting his knee. “This is what tonight is all about. Go ahead, ask her.”

“Thanks Krissy.” David said, as he stood up and kissed the top of her head. “You’re a star.”

Kristina watched as David walked round to where Stephanie was sitting and heard him ask her if she’d like to dance with him. Stephanie then stood up and the two of them made their way to the dance floor. Kristina had been watching David and Stephanie dance for only a few minutes when she heard a voice behind her.

“Do you mind if I sit here?”

It was the man she had bumped into earlier.

“I just thought it was about time I introduced myself.” he said, holding his hand out. “My name is Urs.”

“Please, take a seat.” Kristina replied as she took his hand. Kristina couldn‘t help noticing how warm and soft his skin felt as they held hands again, a firm but gentle grip.

“Urs? That’s an unusual name, where are you from if you don‘t mind me asking?” Kristina said, breaking the silence and doing her utmost to keep calm.

“Switzerland.” he replied, as they finally let go of each others hand. “Willisau to be exact.”

Kristina was trying hard to concentrate on what he was saying. His eyes still had a hold over her. “I’ve heard that’s a beautiful place. I’d love to visit there someday but work keeps me so busy.”

“Well if you do decide to visit, I’ll be glad to show you some of the local sights.” Urs said, getting to his feet. “I’m a little out of practice, but would you like to dance?” Urs asked holding out his hand to her.

“I’d love to.” Kristina replied, getting up from her seat and taking his hand as Urs led her to the dance floor.

Kristina listened intently to Urs as he told all about his singing career. How he had attended the Academy for School and Church music, then sung in a boys choir before joining a rock band when he was 17. Kristina couldn’t help giggling when he told her.

“What’s so funny?” Urs asked, looking puzzled.

“I’m sorry, but I just can’t picture you in a rock band.” Kristina replied. “But I guess the hair fit’s the rock image.” she added as she ran a finger through his curls.

“Well it used to be longer than this.” Urs said, as he fiddled with his glasses. “A lot longer.”

“What made you decide to cut it?” Kristina asked.

“I decided to study classical music and was lucky enough to study with Gosta Winberg and Christian Papis.“ Urs replied. “Somehow I don’t think they would have taken me seriously looking like something out of ‘Planet of the Apes’ so I had it cut.”

Kristina couldn’t help giggling at the image she had in her head. She continued listening to Urs as he finished telling her how he had studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory under Udo Reinemann and had sung with the Salzburg and Amsterdam Operas.
“So do you live in Holland then?” Kristina asked, anxious to know more about him. “Or do you still live in Switzerland?”

“Actually I live in Paris.” Urs replied. “I moved there to be with my girlfriend.”

“Oh, you mean Stephanie,” Kristina asked, inquisitively.

“No, someone else.” Urs replied, quietly. “But we don’t see each other anymore.”

Kristina noticed the look on his face again and was longing to know why he looked so sad. But she had only know him for a few hours and didn’t think it was appropriate to ask such a personal question and so let the matter pass.

“So is that your boyfriend?” Urs asked, as he glanced over at David who was still dancing with Stephanie.

“Yes, that’s David.” Kristina replied. “I met him through work. He was looking for a new booking agent and someone gave him my name. We got on brilliantly, and the rest they say is history.”

Urs looked toward Kristina. “You make a charming couple, and he’s a very lucky man.”

“Thank you.” Kristina replied, blushing yet again.

“Now it’s my turn to make you blush.” Urs said, chuckling.

Kristina smiled, as they continued to dance in silence to several more songs, but it was a comfortable silence, neither of them felt the need to speak; both enjoying each others company and the music.

“Do you mind if I steal this lovely lady away from you?” David asked, as he placed an arm around Kristina’s waist.

“Not at all.” Urs replied. “I was just saying you’re a very lucky man. She’s a wonderful woman.”

“Thank you.” David said, with a big smile on his face as he shook Urs’ hand.

“Thank you for the dance.” Kristina said, finding herself somewhat reluctant to leave Urs‘ side. “Considering you’re out of practice I thought you danced perfectly.”

“Well at least I didn’t step on your feet.” Urs said, smiling as he ran his fingers through his hair. “So I guess that’s something.”

Kristina and David stayed on the dance floor while Urs and Stephanie headed back to their table. David spent the next ten minutes telling Kristina about his conversation with Stephanie. She had taken his phone number and had promised to contact him in the next few weeks, and hopefully she’d have some good news for him.

“Well it looks like you won’t need me as your booking agent anymore.” Kristina said jokingly. “It seems you’re doing fine by yourself.”

“I’ll always need you, Krissy.” David whispered in her ear, as he pulled her closer to him. “You know that.”

“I know.” Kristina replied, leaning her head against his chest as they continued to dance. “And I’ll always need you.”

Eventually the guests started to leave and Kristina and David made their way back to their table. David noticed Kristina frown as they sat down.

“What’s wrong babe?” David asked, when he noticed her frown.

“Urs and Stephanie, they’ve gone.” she replied. “I would’ve thought they’d say goodnight.”

“Maybe they were tired and just wanted to go back to their hotel.” David said, finishing his drink. “I know I’m tired. I‘m just going to pop to the Gents and then we’ll leave okay?”

“Ok, I’ll go and get my coat.” Kristina replied, getting up from her seat.

As David walked out to the lobby, Kristina noticed something on the floor where Urs had been sitting. She bent down to pick it up. It was a mans cufflink, with gold initials etched on to a black background. The initials were U.B. and Kristina automatically assumed it belonged to Urs. She quickly picked up her bag and made her way to the front entrance. Maybe Urs and Stephanie had only just left, maybe she could still catch him on his way out. Kristina stepped outside into the chilly New York City air and looked up and down the street for him. But he was nowhere to be seen.

“Hey you forgot your coat.” David said, as he put it round her shoulders. “You’ll catch your death standing there dressed like that in these temperatures.”

Kristina hadn’t even noticed how cold it was, she was so intent on finding Urs. “What have you got there?” David asked, as he noticed something shining in her hand.

“Nothing.” she replied. “Just something I found on the floor.”

“Well, come on then.” David said, taking Kristina’s hand. “Let’s go back inside in the warm and wait for a taxi.”

As Kristina followed David back inside, she looked at the cufflink, wondering if she’d ever get the chance to return it to Urs.

***** CHAPTER 6 *****

Stephanie and Urs had left the Awards not long after returning to their table from dancing. Stephanie had said she was tired and wanted to leave. Urs was going to say goodbye to David and Kristina but he could see they were busy talking and didn’t want to disturb them. When Urs had returned to the hotel he had said goodnight to Stephanie and made his way to his room. It was only when he started to get undressed that he realised he’d lost a cufflink. He’d been frantic when he noticed it missing and had looked all over the floor of his hotel room. He’d even retraced his steps from the hotel entrance back up to this room in the hope of finding it; but no luck. He decided to call the venue the following morning to ask if anyone had found it while tidying up. Urs wouldn’t normally worry about a lost cufflink but this pair had sentimental value. Aimee had given them to him for Christmas. He was furious with himself. If he hadn’t spent so much time looking at Kristina and thinking about her he might have noticed when or where he dropped the cufflink. Urs took it as a sign from Aimee, one beautiful woman pays him a compliment and he’s already starting to forget her. Urs remembered his promise to Aimee and put all thoughts of Kristina out of his head.

Abigail had been in the hotel for 24 hours now. Earlier that morning she had made the short walk to the nearby train station where a friend of Carlos’ had left a bag in a luggage locker for her. She had been sitting in her room for a whole hour trying to work up the courage to go outside. She was convinced that Brian would see her and take her back home. As long she stayed in the hotel she felt safe, Carlos knew where she was but Brian didn’t. And that was the way she wanted things to stay. But Abigail had to go out. The hotel provided the usual complimentary toiletries, but she didn’t have a toothbrush or deodorant and she needed some more clothes. Everything she owned was still back at the house and there was no way she was going back there.

Abigail had finally talked herself in to going to the station. She felt like she was in a movie; the undercover agent sneaking around with a key for a locker to collect a package left by an unknown person. She used to laugh at the old movies, the man trying to blend in to the crowd, but he was always the one that stood out; the hat pulled down over his face, the upturned collar, the dark glasses, hands in pockets looking everywhere. But this was serious and no laughing matter. If Brian or any of his friends saw her, she knew they would follow her back to the hotel. So after she had stopped off at a couple of shops and bought what she needed, she decided to do what she’d seen them do in the old movies. Abigail walked for half an hour around town making sure that no one was following her before making her way back to the hotel. As soon as she’d got back to the hotel she had gone up to the first floor window on the landing which over looked the street, checking to see if anyone was hanging around. It really did seem almost comical now she was in the safety of her hotel room, but now she understood why people did it. She wasn’t expecting to see anyone waiting outside, it was for peace of mind, reassurance that she was still safe from Brian’s abuse.

Abigail sat down on the window seat and looked at the view outside her window. She had a perfect view of the hotels private gardens and although it was now dark outside she could still see small parts of the garden lit up by the moonlight as it found it‘s way through the thick branches of the large oak tree in the centre of the lawn. Abigail decided to take a stroll round the gardens. She’d spent most of the last twenty four hours cooped up in a hotel room and the only fresh air she had was when she went out earlier to collect the bag from the station. Abigail picked up a jacket which she had bought earlier that morning and made her way downstairs to the gardens.

The cold air made her shiver as she stepped outside. She did up her jacket and wrapped her arms around herself as she walked down the small gravel path to a wooden bench. Abigail looked around the gardens. It was beautiful, she had never felt more at peace as she listened to the sound of the water fountain. The moonlight seemed to be everywhere, dancing across the water in the small pond, illuminating the flowers. White impatiens looked like snowy mounds scattered across the garden; tall elegant trumpet lilies towering over them, their centres glowing in the moonlight making them look almost surreal and magical. As Abigail took in the cold night air she noticed the scent from the flowers. The smell in the garden was intoxicating, the heady smell of the trumpet lilies, the sweet Alyssum and the warm scent of vanilla from the Heliotrope.

“Abigail?”

Abigail looked up as soon as she heard a man’s voice. She panicked for an instant thinking it might be Brian. But the accent was wrong.

“Carlos?” she replied, getting up from the bench. She squinted to get a better look at him but the bright lights from the hotel behind him prevented her from seeing him clearly. All she could see was the silhouette of a man several inches taller than herself and short wavy hair.

“At last.” he said, in a soft Spanish accent. “I have been looking everywhere for you.” Carlos started walking towards her.

“I’m sorry, I needed to get some air.” Abigail said quietly, feeling a little nervous at his sudden arrival. “I wasn’t expecting you.”

“I couldn’t wait any longer.” Carlos said, taking her hand. “I don’t have to be back on stage for another couple of days so I thought I would take the opportunity to fly out and visit you.”

Abigail’s body trembled as Carlos took her hand, the feeling of warmth and tenderness from his hand made her tingle all over. Carlos noticed her shiver but misunderstood the reason why.

“I’m sorry querida.” Carlos said softly. “You must be cold, let us go inside.”

Still holding her hand Carlos led Abigail back in to the hotel where they found two arm chairs in the corner of the bar. Abigail took off her jacket her and sat down beside Carlos; their eyes swept over each other, now both able to see clearly in the light.

There was no denying it, he was good looking. He was dressed in black trousers with a black shirt and jacket. He looked how she imagined a typical Spaniard to be. He had several shirt buttons undone, more than needed in this cold weather, black wavy hair with a small kiss curl on one side, tanned skin and brilliant white teeth. But he had something different about him, she felt like she had known him for years. She could feel her cheeks glowing as he smiled at her. Abigail almost melted on the spot as she looked back at him, and noticed his honey brown eyes; they looked friendly and inviting.

“How are you?” he asked quietly.

“I’m fine thanks to you.” Abigail replied smiling at him. “I can’t thank you enough for all you’ve done for me. I don’t know how I’ll ever be able to repay you.”

“Do not worry about it.” Carlos said, placing his hand over hers. “Think of it as a gift from me to you. I don‘t want you to repay me. Just knowing that you are safe from Brian is all that matters to me.”

“How did you know it was me outside in the garden?” Abigail asked, leaning back in her chair. “And how did you know where to look?”

“I asked the receptionist if she could call your room for me.” Carlos replied. “I didn’t want to just show up at your door, especially at this time of night. But the receptionist remembered seeing you come here to the lounge. When I got here I couldn’t find you so I thought I would try the gardens.”

“But you still haven’t told me how you knew it was me?” Abigail asked again.

“I just knew.” Carlos said softly. “The moment I saw you sitting there I just knew.”

The two of them looked at each for what seemed like an eternity before Carlos broke the silence.

“I hope you don’t mind, but I asked for the room next to yours.”

“I don’t mind at all.” Abigail replied. “It’ll be a comfort knowing you’re nearby.”

“Will you join me for breakfast tomorrow?” Carlos asked, as he stood up from his seat. “There’s such a lot for us to talk about.”

“I’d love to.” Abigail replied. “What time?”

“Will 8 o’clock be alright?” Carlos asked.

“Sounds perfect.” Abigail said, picking up her jacket.

Carlos moved closer to Abigail so he was standing in front of her.

“Would it be alright if I gave you a hug?” Carlos asked, sounding a little nervous. “We haven’t said hello properly yet.”

“A hug would be nice.” Abigail replied, smiling up at him.

Carlos moved closer and put his arms around her, pulling her into him, while Abigail slid her arms around his waist and rested her head against his chest. She had never felt safer than she did at that one moment in time. Carlos had done so much for her and asked for nothing in return. She could feel the tears starting to form in her eyes but couldn’t do a thing to stop them as she felt them run down her face.

“Shhh, there’s no need to cry, Abby.” he whispered while gently stroking her hair. “I’ll never let anyone hurt you again as long as I live. You have got me now. I will look after you.”

Abigail wasn’t even sure why she was crying, she wasn’t sad, she was the happiest she had been in months, she had finally gotten away from Brian and had found friendship with Carlos. She only knew that even if she never saw Carlos again after tonight, he had changed her life forever; for the better. But she just hoped that Carlos would become a part of her new life; with out Brian.

***** CHAPTER 7 *****

Abigail rolled over in bed and looked at the clock; 7am. She had been awake for about half an hour, laying there thinking about last night when she had met Carlos for the first time. Abigail had been a little embarrassed about crying in front of Carlos, but he told her not to be. She had been through so much over the last few months that it was understandable. He had then walked her up to her room, before making his way to his own room. Abigail had one of the best nights sleep she’d had in months. Abigail then started thinking about Carlos and was surprised at how attractive she found him. She hadn’t even thought about what Carlos might look like when she was chatting to him online. It was the last thing on her mind, she simply enjoyed talking to him and having someone to talk to about Brian. Abigail couldn’t believe that this was her second day in over a year without Brian. She didn’t have to worry about upsetting him and suffering the consequences. The only person she had to worry about now was herself. Abigail got up out of bed and chose an outfit for the day before getting in the shower.

Unlike Abigail, Carlos had been awake most of the night, tossing and turning. He couldn’t stop thinking about her. He knew they had built up a special relationship over the last few months, but after meeting her last night it only confirmed what he already knew. He had fallen for her. Carlos wondered if she felt the same, but he wasn’t going to ask her to find out. Abigail had only just left Brian. He couldn’t see her leaving an abusive boyfriend only to start up a new relationship with a man she had met less then twenty four hours ago. Carlos was already up and dressed and it was only 7am. He was starting to get nervous about meeting Abigail. He didn’t know why. They had got on so well last night. Maybe it was because he was worried about what would happen between them now. Abigail had left Brian but who’s to say she will want anything more to do with Carlos now that she was safe. There was something he wanted to ask her but he didn’t know if it was too soon. She could say no. He could ruin the friendship they have. Carlos paced around his room, until it was time to meet Abigail, trying to decide what he should do.

Sebastien picked up his room key and headed for the door. At least with it being a Sunday he was able to relax a little now. It also helped knowing that the meeting went well with Danny yesterday. Danny had been pleased with everything Sebastien had written and didn’t see the need to make any changes to the songs; including the final song which had been giving him so much trouble. Sebastien was on his way downstairs to have breakfast; he had just stepped out in to the hall when he heard a familiar voice. It was Katy. But she wasn’t on her own, she was with a man. The two seemed to know each other and she certainly seemed a lot more friendlier with him than she had been with Sebastian a couple of nights ago. He wondered if he was her boyfriend. Sebastien had been hoping that he would get the chance to talk to her again; to find out why she had lied about her name. But he was also attracted to her and wouldn’t mind getting to know her a little better. Any chance of that happening seemed to be slowly disappearing as he saw the man put an arm around her shoulder and step in to the elevator. Sebastien slowed down his pace so that she didn’t see him; he didn’t want to scare her, he remembered how she reacted to him in the bar. As soon as the elevator doors shut, Sebastien walked over to the elevator and waited for the next one to come.

Urs woke up with a thumping headache. He was woken during the night with the usual flashbacks of the accident; but more than usual. He knew it was because of what happened last night. He had cried himself to sleep after losing one of the cufflinks Aimee had given him. He was going to telephone the venue as soon as they opened and see if anyone had found it. He knew it was a long shot, but he hoped that someone was thoughtful enough to hand it in. Urs dragged himself out of bed, pulled on a pair of boxers and went to the bathroom. He felt groggy from lack of sleep and his head was still pounding. He splashed some cold water on his face, trying to wake himself up. He reached for a towel, dried his face and looked up in to the mirror. Urs didn’t recognise the face looking back at him anymore; the uncombed curls were still out of control, but somehow he looked different. He felt like he had aged years over the last few months. His eyes were puffy and red from crying, but the tired look was something that had happened since Aimee had died. He still found it hard to get up in the mornings. Some mornings he would wake up and reach out for her. For a split second he would believe she was still alive and for that one split second he felt pure happiness; only to lose it again as soon as the memories came flooding back. Urs turned around and switched the shower on, he had to get ready to meet Stephanie. They were leaving New York later today and returning to Paris. He couldn’t wait to get back home, to be closer to Aimee.

Carlos and Abigail walked in to the breakfast room and made their way to a table in the corner by the window.

“Did you sleep well?” Carlos asked, after the waiter had left with their order.

“Yes thanks.” Abigail replied. “I can’t remember the last time I slept so soundly. I think I was still too nervous to sleep properly the first night I stayed here. I was convinced Brian would find me. And last night, I think it helped knowing that you were only next door.”

“Well, Brian hasn’t found you yet.” Carlos said, as he laid his hand over hers. “And he’s not going to, if I can help it.”

Abigail frowned slightly, as she looked at Carlos. “It’s nice of you to say that but Brian has a lot of friends. He’s well known in these parts and well respected. If someone see’s me they’ll be sure to tell him.”

“What is it that Brian does?” Carlos asked, sounding a little surprised. “How can a man who hit’s a woman have respect from anyone?”

Abigail started to explain to Carlos a little more about Brian. “His family used to run several business’s in the town which meant jobs for a lot of people. His father was a good man and well respected and he looked after his employees. But then he became ill and had to take early retirement so he handed the business over to Brian. But Brian wasn‘t interested in it.”

The waiter then returned with their breakfast and left them to eat in peace.

“So what did he do?” Carlos asked, when the waiter had gone. “Did he sell it?”

“No, he decided to hire someone to keep running it. He was only interested in any profits that it made. He carried on with his own career, as a reporter. Brian started off working for a small local paper but now he‘s working for a national newspaper and trying to get in to TV. I‘ll admit he‘s good at his job but I think it‘s because of who is father is that he‘s made it this far. Everyone knows he has a temper, but he‘s never been violent towards them; only me.”

“So they are scared of him too.” Carlos said. “They are not real friends. I am sure they would not tell him where you are if they know what he is like.”

“But I can’t take that risk.” Abigail said, before taking a sip of orange juice.

“So what are you going to do?” Carlos asked, worried about what her reply would be.

“I’ll have to leave here.” she replied. “Move far away, somewhere where he will never find me. I’ll start over again.”

Carlos was silent. This seemed like the right time to ask her, but he couldn’t be sure what her answer would be.

“Carlos are you alright?” Abigail asked, taking his hand. “You look, I don’t know… worried?”

“I want to ask you something.” Carlos replied. “But I’m worried it might be too soon.”

Abigail was intrigued to know what Carlos was going to ask her; she couldn’t imagine what it would be.

“There’s only one way of finding out.” Abigail said, smiling. “Ask me.”

Carlos looked deep in thought for a moment, trying to find the right words. “I’m not quite sure how to say this but…” Carlos paused, still not sure how to ask her.

“Carlos, it’s okay.” Abigail said. “You can ask me anything.”

“Anything?” Carlos asked, looking her.

“Yes. Anything.” she replied.

Carlos gently squeezed her hand. “I have to fly back to Spain tomorrow night.”

Abigail tried to hide the look of sadness on her face, she was hoping Carlos would stay longer but she knew he had work commitments and he couldn’t stay here forever.

“I understand.” Abigail replied. “You have to go back for your job. It’s alright I’ll be fine, you’ve already done so much for me.”

“No, you don’t understand.” Carlos said, shaking his head. “I want you to come to Spain. I’m asking you to come with back with me tomorrow.”

Abigail was stunned. She had told him he could ask her anything but that was the last thing she was expecting. Move to Spain? She couldn’t, could she? She didn’t have anything keeping her here. All her family was in New York, she had no job, she had lost contact with all her friends. The only reason she came to Paris was to study music, and that dream was put on hold because of Brian. He was the one reason why she should leave.

Carlos looked at Abigail, trying to read the expression on her face. He couldn’t tell what she was thinking.

“Abigail?”

Abigail looked back at Carlos. She wanted to say yes, the idea of going to Spain sounded like the perfect solution. But she knew she had to think seriously about this.

“Carlos, do you mind if I don’t give you an answer straight away?” Abigail asked.

“Of course.” Carlos replied, smiling. “I understand it’s a big decision. You need time to think about it.”

“I think I’m going to go up to my room if that’s alright.” Abigail said, getting up from her seat. “I need to phone my sister. I still haven’t told her where I am.”

Carlos watched as Abigail left the breakfast room. She hadn’t said no, that was a good thing wasn’t it? She could say no, but she still might say yes. Carlos decided he had done the right thing by asking her. He had to fly back to Spain tomorrow and if he left it any longer she might make other arrangements and he might never see her again.

Abigail left the breakfast room and went straight up to her room. She needed to let her sister know what had happened with Brian, and now Carlos. She would probably think Abigail was insane but she wasn’t going to make any decision just yet. She still had until tomorrow to think about it.

“Ignore it. If it’s important they’ll call back.” David murmured in between kisses as the phone rang.

“But what if it’s work.” Kristina mumbled as David’s mouth moved from her lips down to her neck. “It might be a client.”

“Krissy it’s 3am on a Sunday.” David mumbled again.

“But what if….” Kristina caught her breath as David slowly moved down her body, covering her with kisses. “David.….”

Kristina’s mind started to block out the sound of the ringing phone. It soon stopped, but less than a minute later it started to ring again..

“It’s no good. I’m going to have to answer it.” Kristina said, gently pushing David off her. “It must be important to ring at this time of night.”

“Correction. Morning!” David groaned, as he laid back on the bed.

Kristina gave him one last kiss before picking up the phone.

********************************************************************************
****************************

“He what!” her sister screamed down the phone. “I hope you said no.”

“Kristina, will you calm down!” Abigail said. “I haven’t decided on anything yet.”

“Please tell me you’re not seriously thinking about going.” Kristina asked.

“Yes I am.” Abigail replied, as she sat down on the bed.

“Are you mad? You’ve only just met him.” Kristina said, still shouting. “You’ve just left a man who used you as a punch bag and now you’re going to run off to Spain with a complete stranger?”

“I haven’t said yes yet.” Abigail said, standing up and walking over to the window.

“Yet? So you’re going to say yes then?” Kristina asked. “You’ve already decided haven’t you. You’re not going to listen to a word I say.”

“I’ve got nothing keeping me here.” Abigail replied. “Spain seems a good a place as any to make a new start.”

“But what about here?” Kristina asked. “Why not come back home to the US? It doesn’t have to be New York.”

“I don’t want to.” Abigail replied, looking out the window. She then noticed Carlos walking in the gardens. “I like him. He’s kind, caring, and thoughtful and he makes me feel good about myself.”

“And I’m sure you thought that about Brian when you first met him.” Kristina said, lowering her voice. “And look how that relationship turned out. Are you willing to take that risk again, with a man who you met online? You don‘t know a thing about him.”

“I know enough.” Abigail replied, as she saw Carlos look up at her window. Abigail waved at him and then gestured for him to come up to her room.

“So what do I tell mom and dad when they ask about you and Brian?” Kristina asked. “And ‘if’ you decide to go to Spain, how do I explain that?”

“Tell them the truth.” Abigail replied. “Tell them I left him and that I‘m taking a holiday.”

“You’re going to say yes, aren’t you?” Kristina said, sadly.

“I’m sorry Kristina, but if you met him you’d know why I have to go.” Abigail replied. “Maybe we can come and visit you and David and you can meet him. Or you can come and visit us in Spain.”

“Maybe.” Kristina replied, quietly.

“Everything’s ok with you two, isn’t it?” Abigail asked.

“Things are great with us,” Kristina replied. “Honestly. David met someone last night who might able to put in a good word for him for some big shows that are coming up.”

“That’s great news.” Abigail exclaimed. “But I guess that means he’ll be travelling a lot and busy with rehearsals. Oh I’ve got to go now,” Abigail said, as someone knocked at the door.

“But Abigail…” Kristina started to say.

“Kristina someone’s at the door.” Abigail replied, heading to the door. “I’ll call you later okay? Love you sis, bye.”

Abigail opened the door and came face to face with Carlos.

“You wanted to see me?” Carlos asked, as Abigail stepped aside and let him in to the room.

“Yes,” Abigail replied. “I’ve made my decision and the answer is yes.”

“Yes?” Carlos said, sounding shocked. “You mean yes, you’ll come to Spain with me?”

“Yes!” Abigail said again. “You sound surprised. Did you think I would say no?”

“To be honest, yes.” Carlos replied. “I know we only met for the first time last night, but I feel like I‘ve known you all my life.”

“I know exactly what you mean.” Abigail said, walking over to where Carlos was standing.

The two of them looked at each for several seconds, before Carlos stepped closer to Abigail and cupped her face in his hands, softly brushing his lips against hers. Several seconds later Abigail pushed him away.

“I’m sorry.” Carlos said as he stepped back. “I shouldn’t have done that. I know it was wrong. I wanted to kiss you last night but…”

Carlos was cut off mid-sentence as Abigail took hold of his jacket and pulled him back to her, firmly pressing her lips on his. Carlos slid his arms around her waist, holding her close to him. He couldn’t wait to go back home and take Abigail with him.

***** CHAPTER 8 *****

After Abigail had hung up on her, Kristina put the phone down before climbing back in to bed and snuggling up to David.

“Are you alright?” he asked, as he wrapped his arms around her. “It’s not like you and Abigail to argue.”

“I’m okay.” she replied quietly. “I’m just a little worried about her. She doesn’t know what she’s getting herself in to. This man that she met online, I appreciate all he’s done for her, but asking her to move to Spain with him? She’s mad if she goes with him.”

“It is possible that he genuinely cares for her.” David replied, lightly running his fingers up and down her arm. “Not all men are like Brian, you know.”

“I know.” she said faintly. “But she only met him for the first time yesterday. Who’s to say this one will be any different from Brian.”

“Stop worrying about her.” David said, pulling her closer to him. “She’s a big girl now, I’m sure she can look after herself.”

“Well she couldn’t look after herself with Brian could she.” Kristina replied. “She’s my little sister David. I’m always going to worry about her and look out for her. But I didn’t exactly do a great job when she was with Brian, did I.”

“Hey, you can’t blame yourself for that, Krissy.” David said, kissing her on the forehead. “You tried to help her leave him several times but she refused your help. She wanted to do it her way, in her own time.”

“I know, but then in the end she let him help her.” Kristina said, as tears started to sting her eyes. “She’d rather accept help from a total stranger than her own sister.”

“Krissy, you can’t think that way.” David said softy. “I don’t know the whole story but I’m sure she had her reasons. Just be grateful that Abigail’s no longer with Brian and that she might actually find happiness with this new man.”

“You think so?” Kristina asked, resting her head against David’s chest.

“I’m sure of it.” David whispered. “Now go to sleep. We’ve got to get up soon, we’re going out later.”

“Where?” Kristina asked.

“It’s a surprise.” David replied.

“You know I hate surprises, David.” Kristina said, sleepily.

“You’ll like this one.” David whispered. “Now go to sleep, sweetheart.”

Kristina was thinking about Abigail, hoping she would reconsider moving to Spain; but she soon drifted off to sleep in David’s arms.

*******************************

“Did you phone your sister?” Carlos asked a short time later, as he and Abigail sat down on the couch.

“Kristina?” Abigail said, frowning. “Yes, I phoned her.”

“Did she upset you?” he asked, noticing the expression on her face.

“What makes you say that?” Abigail asked, looking at him.

“The look on your face.” he replied. “You look sad. Did you two argue?”

“Yes. No. Well not really.” Abigail said, sighing. “I told her about Brian and how you had helped me. But then I told her you had asked me to go to Spain with you.”

“And she doesn’t want you to go?” Carlos asked; now worried that maybe Abigail’s sister would talk her out of it.

“She thinks I’m mad, running off to Spain with a complete stranger.” Abigail said, looking at Carlos.

“When you put it like that I guess she has a point.” Carlos said, as he leaned back against the couch.

“But you’re not a stranger.” Abigail said, taking his hand in hers. “We might have only seen each other for the first time yesterday, but we’ve known each other for months. We’re friends aren‘t we?”

Carlos gently squeezed her hand. “Yes we’re friends.” Carlos replied, smiling at her. “And when you’re ready I hope we’ll be more than just friends.”

“Me too.” Abigail said, as she looked him in the eyes.

“So you’re still coming to Spain with me then?” Carlos asked. “Your sister hasn’t convinced you to go back to New York?”

“Yes, I‘m still going to Spain with you.” Abigail replied. “But I’ve just thought of something. Brian has my passport. He hid it months ago, just in case I ever decided to leave Paris.”

“That man is unbelievable.” Carlos said, scowling. “He literally controlled every your every move.”

Abigail shifted in seat, feeling uneasy. She knew she had let Brian have total control of what she did and didn’t do. But she was unable to do anything about it at the time.

“I’m sorry Abby.” Carlos said quickly, when he noticed she looked upset. “I didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable. It‘s just that I‘ve never come across a man like Brian.”

“It’s alright, Carlos.” Abigail said, getting up from the couch. “But what are we going to do about my passport? I can’t ask Brian for it. Somehow I can’t see him handing it over to me and wishing me good luck.”

“Will he be home now?” Carlos asked, standing up and walking over to Abigail. “I mean on a Sunday.”

“Probably.” Abigail replied. “He usually goes out drinking all of Saturday night so he’s probably still in bed sleeping it off.”

“What about tomorrow?” Carlos asked. “Will he be at work?”

“Yes.” Abigail replied. “Why? What are you thinking?”

“Have you still got your house keys?” Carlos said.

“No, they were in my bag and Brian had them when he got stopped by the security guards.” Abigail said, wondering what Carlos was planning. “What’s with all the questions? What are you going to do?”

“I’m going to break in to your house and find your passport for you.” Carlos replied, grinning at her. “That’s what I’m going to do.”

***************************************

Urs and Stephanie had left New York earlier that morning. They had arrived in Paris a short time ago and Urs was now driving Stephanie back to her apartment.

“Thank you for coming with me this weekend, Urs.” Stephanie said, as she turned to look at him. “I hate going to those sort of functions on my own. You‘re always expected to have a partner.”

“That’s alright Stephanie.” Urs replied, concentrating on the road ahead. “Anything for a friend.”

Stephanie continued to stare at Urs for a minute or two.

“Is that what I am, Urs? A friend?” Stephanie said, quietly.

Urs slowed the car down as he pulled up outside Stephanie’s apartment block.

“Of course you’re my friend.” Urs replied, now turning to look at her. “What sort of a question is that?”

“Maybe I should rephrase that” Stephanie said, looking away from him. “Am I just a friend to you and nothing more?”

Urs was silent for a moment before answering.

“Stephanie, you’ll always be my friend.” Urs said, putting a hand on her shoulder. “But anything more than that? I honestly don’t know. You know how I feel about Aimee. I can’t forget her and I’m not ready for another relationship. Not yet.”

“Urs it’s been over a year.” Stephanie said, putting her hand over Urs’. “I’m not asking you to forget Aimee. But maybe you should start thinking about yourself for a change. You don’t want to be alone for the rest of your life do you?”

“I don’t know what I want at the moment, Stephanie.” Urs replied. “I can’t even think about looking at another woman, not when I still love Aimee.”

“What about that woman last night?” Stephanie asked, sternly. “You couldn’t take your eyes off her.”

“What woman?” Urs asked, sounding surprised. “Who are you talking about?”

“The blonde one.” Stephanie replied. “David’s girlfriend.”

“Kristina?” Urs asked. “But I hardly spoke to her. And I only danced with her for a short time.”

“That might be true.” Stephanie said, as she got her keys out of her purse. “But you were watching her all night, and I saw the way you were looking at her during dinner. You’ve never looked at me that way. If you ask me, I think you have feelings for her.”

“That’s not true and I didn‘t ask you.” Urs snapped. “And like you quite rightly said, she has a boyfriend.”

“I know.” Stephanie replied warily. “But just because she‘s seeing someone doesn‘t mean you can‘t feel something for her.”

“How can I feel anything for some woman that I never met until last night and probably won’t ever see again?” Urs retorted. “You‘re imagining things. I‘ll get your bags out of the trunk.”

Urs got out of the car and slammed the door, leaving a shocked Stephanie sitting in the passenger seat. Stephanie had seen Urs when he had his mood swings but this was different. Usually he would yell and shout and pick fault with everything. Yet when she had mentioned Kristina’s name he had become defensive. Urs could deny it, but Stephanie knew he was attracted to Kristina, and she had seen the same look on Kristina’s face when she looked at Urs. She might have a boyfriend but that didn’t mean a thing in this day and age. People cheated on their partners all the time, anything could happen between Urs and Kristina. Stephanie liked David and could see he had talent, but could she risk contacting him with the possibility of Kristina putting in another appearance and meeting Urs again? Stephanie had known Urs a long time and she wasn’t about to let some blonde walk in to Urs’ life and take her away from him. Not without a fight.

Stephanie got out of the car and went to help Urs with her bags.

“I’m sorry, Urs.” Stephanie said, taking her bags from him. “I didn’t mean for it to come out like that. I just meant that… we’ve been friends a long time. I was hoping that maybe one day something would come of it. I guess I’m a little jealous of her.”

“Of Kristina? You’ve got nothing to be jealous about.” Urs replied, closing the trunk of the car. “There’s nothing going on between me and Kristina, or anyone for that matter. Now can we please drop the subject and forget this conversation.”

“Of course.” Stephanie replied, worried that she had upset Urs; but for all the wrong reasons. She wasn’t worried of the fact that he might be upset about loving another woman after Aimee. Stephanie was worried that she might have blown her chance with Urs. At least he knew how Stephanie felt about him so if he was ever ready for another relationship maybe he would turn to her. And she would make sure Kristina was no where in sight.

“I’ll see you tomorrow for the rehearsals.” Urs said, walking back to the drivers side. “I heard they were thinking of making a few changes to some of the songs. So it might be a long day, make sure you get plenty of rest.”

Urs got back in the car with out giving Stephanie a chance to say anything. He didn’t mean to take his anger out on Stephanie, but she had annoyed him. Yes, he would admit to finding Kristina attractive; but having feelings for her? How could he? He had only just met her. He wasn’t likely to ever see her again. But then Stephanie had mentioned she was going to contact David about the possibility of working with her in some new shows. Maybe he would see her again. Stephanie had noticed him looking at Kristina, but what did she mean exactly when she said “I saw the way you were looking at her.” What way? And had he really been watching her all night. Had Kristina noticed? Worse still, had David noticed?

Urs hit the steering wheel with his fist. “Damn it! Why did I ever agree to go to New York?”

***********************************

“Krissy.”

“Mmmm…. What is it?” came the mumbled reply.

“Krissy, it’s time to get up.” David whispered into her ear.

“Oh do I have to?” Kristina asked sleepily, as she rolled over on to her back and saw David’s face hovering above hers.

“Yes you do.” David replied. “We’re going out, remember?”

“Where are we going?” Kristina asked.

“I told you last night.” David said, brushing a stray hair off her face. “It’s a surprise.”

“Awww David, please tell me.” she replied, as she slowly ran her hands over his chest. “You know I hate surprises.”

“No, you’ll have to wait.” David replied, grinning at her. “But I promise you, you’ll love it.”

“Is there nothing I can do to convince you to tell me?” Kristina asked innocently, as her hands went from his chest and moved further down his body.

David moaned quietly, before grabbing her hands and pinning her to the bed with his body. “No, like I said, it’s a surprise so you’ll have to be patient.”

Kristina giggled as David started kissing her neck, the whiskers on his chin tickling her skin.

“I think we’d better get up now.” Kristina said, trying to move out from under David. “What time do we have to be there?”

“We’ve got plenty of time.” David said, as he kissed her shoulder and shifted his body so she couldn’t move.

“So why did you wake me so early then?” Kristina asked.

“Why do you think?” David replied, with a playful grin. “You said if I went to the Tony Awards last night that I could do anything I wanted to today. And guess what I want to do.”

“And what if I don’t want to?” Kristina asked, giggling. “I might have a headache.”

“I know you want to.” David said between kisses. “How can you resist? Just look at me.“

Kristina tried not to laugh. “David, you’re just too modest.”

“Hey I can’t help it. I was born this way.” he replied, before kissing her neck. “And besides, I have the perfect cure for a headache.”

***** CHAPTER 9 *****

“Are you ready?” Carlos asked, looking at Abigail.

“I think so.” Abigail replied, nervously.

“You do not have to come with me.” Carlos said taking her hand as they left the hotel. “You can stay here if you will feel safer.”

“I know, but I’ll be fine as long as Brian isn’t there.” Abigail said, as they walked towards the hire car that Carlos had arranged. “Besides, it will be quicker if there are two of us looking for my passport.”

“Well as long as you are sure.” Carlos replied, as he opened the car door for her.

“I’m sure.” Abigail replied, before getting in to the car.

******************

Fifteen minutes later and Carlos and Abigail were parked up in her street a few yards away from her house. They wanted to make sure Brian had gone to work so they had arrived early. Brian was just backing the car out of the drive when they had pulled up in to the street and Abigail had ducked down out of sight until he had gone.

“So that was the famous Brian.” Carlos said, as he looked over his shoulder and watched Brian’s car disappear round the corner. “You’d never know what he was capable of just by looking at him.”

Abigail cautiously sat up looking back to make sure Brian had gone. “Yes, well I know better now. I’m never going to back to him. Never.”

Carlos took Abigail’s hand and gently squeezed it. “I’m glad to hear it. Now, are you ready to go and look for this passport of yours? We have a plane to catch in a few hours.”

“I’m ready.” Abigail replied. “Let’s get this done as quickly as possible. I don’t want to have to stay here a moment longer than necessary.”

Carlos and Abigail got out of the car and made their way to the house. Abigail unlocked the side gate and they went straight round the back of the house. Abigail figured that if they had to break in to the house then it would safer to do break in through the back way, that way no one would see them.

“How do you want me to do this?” Carlos asked. “Shall I just break the glass?”

“I don’t know.” Abigail replied. “I don’t want you cutting yourself. And what about fingerprints? What if Brian reports this? I don’t want you getting in to trouble.”

“I have some gloves in the car.” Carlos replied. “Do you want me to go and get them?”

Just as Abigail was about to answer she heard a woman’s voice call her name, making her jump.

“Abigail?”

Abigail turned around to see her neighbour, Mrs Lavelle looking over the fence.

“I thought it was you.” she said, leaning her arms on the fence. “I haven’t seen you for a day or two. I was beginning to think something had happened to you.”

“Hello Mrs Lavelle.” Abigail said, smiling at the old woman. “I’m fine, but I'm moving out. I’ve left Brian.” Abigail added, proudly.

“About time too love.” Mrs Lavelle said grinning at her. “I always thought you were too good for him. So what are you doing back now?”

“I came to get some of my things.” Abigail replied. “I’m leaving for Spain this afternoon but I left my passport here and I don’t have my keys.”

“Stay right there.” Mrs Lavelle said, before disappearing out of sight.

“Who’s that woman?” Carlos asked. “Can we trust her? Will she tell Brian you were here?”

“That’s Mrs Lavelle, our neighbour.” Abigail replied. “I know she’s never liked Brian so she won’t tell him I was here. We can trust her.”

Mrs Lavelle face then reappeared over the fence.

“Here, take this love.” Mrs Lavelle said as she held her hand out to Abigail. “It’s a key to your front door.”

“But how did you get this?” Abigail asked, looking shocked.

“Before you moved in with Brian I used to take deliveries for him when he was at work.” Mrs Lavelle replied. “I’m always losing things so I always get copies made, just in case. But then you moved in with Brian and he asked for the key back. But I forgot to tell Brian I had a copy made.”

“Thank you Mrs Lavelle.” Abigail said, taking the key from her. “You’re a life saver.”

“Thank you Mrs Lavelle.” Carlos said holding his hand out to her. “This will make things a lot easier.”

“Ah, you’re Spanish.” Mrs Lavelle said, grinning at Carlos. “Now I know why you want to go to Spain.” she added, as she looked at Abigail and winked.

Abigail blushed as she looked at Mrs Lavelle and then Carlos.

“Yes.” she replied. “And I can’t wait.”

“Well I happen to know that Brian will be at a journalists conference in Rouen today.“ Mrs Lavelle informed them. “And he wouldn’t be finished until late this evening. I over heard him on the phone this morning when I was hanging my washing out. So take your time. And if you can‘t fit everything in that car of yours, just pack it up and leave it with me. I can always send it on to you when you‘re settled.”

Abigail and Carlos thanked Mrs Lavelle again and made their way around the front of the house, but not before Carlos had given Mrs Lavelle his address.

After what Mrs Lavelle had told them, they had decided that while Carlos looked for her passport, Abigail had enough time to pack some of her personal belongings. Abigail had found some old carrier bags in the cupboard under the stairs and packed up all her shoes and some other items. She then remembered that her suitcase was under the bed in the spare bedroom so went took it out from under the bed and started packing up all the clothes she wanted to take with her. She put all her jewellery and some other small items, including perfume and put them in her hand bag. Abigail still had some belongings in the loft but she knew she could do with out them, and most of the other items she had sold so that she could pay to use the internet café. She quickly went around the house, and checked she hadn’t missed anything, before she remembered her photo albums in the draw at the bottom of the bed. Abigail quickly ran up stairs and opened the draw. She took out the albums and sat on the end of the bed, before glancing through the albums.

“What have you got there?” Carlos asked, as he walked in to the bedroom.

“I just remembered my photo albums.” Abigail replied. “I don’t want to leave these behind. I take it you still haven‘t found my passport.”

“No.” Carlos said, as he sat down sat next Abigail and picked up one of the albums. “I can’t find it anywhere downstairs so I was going to start up here next.”

“You don’t think he would’ve destroyed it do you?” Abigail asked, sounding a little worried. “What if he threw it away? What if we don’t find it? That will mean I have to stay here in Paris and apply for a new one.”

“It won’t come to that, I’m sure of it.” Carlos replied. “We’ll find it.”

Carlos flicked through the album, before stopping at a group photograph.

“Who are these people? I am guessing that’s you.” Carlos said, pointing to a woman in the photograph.

“Yes, that’s me with my family.” Abigail replied. “It was taken the day I left New York.”

“Who’s that?” Carlos asked pointing to another woman.

“That’s my sister, Kristina.” Abigail replied.

“You look so alike.” Carlos said, before looking at Abigail. “She’s very pretty. But not as pretty as you.” Carlos added, before putting a finger under her chin and tilting her head towards him.

“You’ll make me blush again if you keep paying me compliments like that.” Abigail said, as she smiled at Carlos.

“Well, you had better get used to it.” Carlos replied, moving his mouth closer to hers. “Because I intend on paying you many more.”

Carlos then gently kissed Abigail, sliding his hand around her waist pulling her closer to him. Abigail put her arm around his neck deepening their kiss. After a few minutes they both pulled away from each other. Abigail had never felt like this before, she never knew that one simple kiss could leave you walking on air.

“I think we had better look for your passport.” Carlos said, with a beaming smile on his face.

Abigail stood up and went to close the draw in the bed but it wouldn’t shut.

“Here, let me try.” Carlos said, as he bent down to close the draw. But even he couldn’t seem to get it to close. Carlos knelt down on the floor and took the draw out completely to try and find out why. “You won’t believe what I’ve found.” Carlos said, as he put his hand inside the opening and pulled out Abigail’s passport.

“You mean I’ve been sleeping on my passport all this time?” Abigail said, taking the passport from Carlos.

“Well at least we can leave now.” Carlos said as he stood up. “That is assuming you have everything you want.”

“I just need to drop these bags off at Mrs Lavelle’s and then we can leave.”

“Alright, let’s go then.” Carlos said, picking up some of the bags. “I’ll meet you downstairs.”

Abigail picked up the photo albums and her bag, and slowly walked through the house looking in every room. She had loved living here when she had first moved in with Brian. But that had soon changed and it never felt like a home to her, it was always his home and she never felt safe. She would be sad to leave it and sad to leave Paris. But she was looking forward to starting a new life in Spain. Abigail met Carlos in the doorway at the foot of the stairs.

“Ready?” Carlos asked, holding out his hand.

“Yes.” Abigail replied. “Let’s go.” Abigail couldn’t help smiling to herself, trying to imagine the look on Brian’s face when he came home and realised that she had left him for good. And that she had found her passport.

Abigail and Carlos locked up the house and took several bags and boxes round to Mrs Lavelle’s house. There was still some room in the car but getting it all one or two suitcases to take on the plane was going to be a problem; so Mrs Lavelle was more than obliging in storing her belongings. They finally made their way back to the hotel where they both went back to their own rooms and started to pack. Their flight was due to leave in a just a few hours, soon they would be leaving for Spain; together.

***** CHAPTER 10 *****

As soon as Urs had got up Sunday morning he had phoned the venue to see if anyone had handed in his cufflink, but no one had. They had promised to look for it and would call him if it showed up. Urs didn’t hold out much hope though. It had probably been swept up and no one had even noticed it. Urs felt awful, losing something so precious and knowing that the likelihood if ever seeing it again was pretty slim.

After dropping Stephanie off at her apartment, Urs had made his way to Montmartre cemetery to be with Aimee. He had sat there for two or three hours, deep in thought, mulling over the events of the last twenty four hours.

Stephanie had told him she was hoping more would come of their friendship. It didn’t come as much of a shock to Urs. He had known Stephanie for a long time and although she had never actually told him she liked him in that way it slowly became obvious. But neither of them had mentioned it, it was obvious that Urs was still mourning Aimee and Stephanie didn’t want to rush Urs into anything he wasn’t ready for. But now, now things were different. Stephanie had noticed how Urs reacted to Kristina and assumed he must have gotten over losing Aimee and was ready to move on; maybe he was.

But it was now Monday morning, Urs was showering and getting ready to collect Stephanie again and start rehearsals. He hadn’t slept well, tossing and turning, the usual flashbacks of the accident had tormented him throughout the night; but instead of seeing Aimee’s face he kept seeing Kristina’s. Urs couldn’t get Kristina off his mind and the more he tried, the more he thought about her. It was starting to worry Urs as to why he should be thinking about her so much. He had found himself thinking about what a relationship with Kristina might be like. Or was it that he simply missed what David and Kristina have together, that he longed to have some one to love and love him in return? Perhaps Stephanie was right, perhaps he should move on. Maybe that’s why he had snapped at Stephanie yesterday, because he knew she was right but didn‘t want to admit it. Urs would never know for sure unless he started to date again, but having a relationship with Stephanie had never once crossed Urs’ mind. He knew she liked him, she had made that clear to him yesterday. But could he feel the same way about her? There was only one way to find out. Urs had finished getting ready, he picked up his jacket and went to collect Stephanie.

********************************

Kristina was sitting at her desk, staring out the window of her office which was once the spare bedroom. It had a beautiful view overlooking the park but Kristina wasn’t really taking any notice of the view. She was thinking about the time her and David had spent together yesterday. It had been weeks since they had been able to spend time together at the weekends and just enjoy each others company. Usually Kristina had to make phone calls at odd hours of the day or visit clients during the weekend because of all the different time zones and their work schedules. David had a busy schedule too, travelling all over the US and Europe auditioning for shows as well as rehearsing for shows that he already had parts in. Just lately they never seemed to be able to get any free time together. David had been doing audition after audition, looking for that one break that would get his career off the ground; and Kristina would do everything possible to help him. It was her job after all, and that was the reason he was so busy, she‘d done a great job in opening some new doors for him. But if she had a choice, she wished he would accept fewer roles, or look for shows closer to home. Kristina knew David couldn’t choose where he wanted to work and that he spent every spare minute he had with her.

Kristina had thoroughly enjoyed yesterday. David had refused to tell her where they were going and kept her guessing right up until the last minute. David had parked the car and they walked for fifteen minutes before David stopped at the kerb and waited to cross the road. Kristina had looked at the big building across the road from them. It was the Javits Convention Centre and this weekend the 18th New York International Motorcycle Show was being held there. Kristina had always had a thing for speed, whether it be cars or bikes and before she had started her business she had gone to more than her fair share of NASCAR and Speedway bike meets. David couldn’t see the fascination with it all. That’s why Kristina was surprised when he led her across the road and they made their way to the Javits entrance.

“You’re not serious!” Kristina exclaimed. “You don’t even like this sort of thing.”

“I know.” David replied, as he paid for their tickets. “But I know how much you love it and it’s only once a year. I knew that if I had suggested coming here you would have said no, that’s why it had to be a surprise.”

“I don’t deserve you.” Kristina had said, she hugged him. “We could’ve done something we both liked, you didn’t have to do this.”

“I wanted to. ” David said, looking down at her. “I want you to be happy.”

Kristina had stopped walking and pulled David to her. “We could’ve been watching paint dry and I’d be happy, David.” Kristina said, putting a hand up to his cheek. “I’m always happy when I’m with you.”

David had given her one of those big smiles and kissed her before saying; “Same here babe, now where do you want to go first?”

Kristina and David had spent the next 5 hours viewing all the exhibitors stands, looking at all the old and new bikes and even watched a performance of bike stunts in the famous Boss Stunt Show. They had then gone home and ordered pizza and watched a movie, just relaxing together. David had to admit it, he had actually enjoyed the show but he knew it was because he was with Kristina. In the eight months they had been seeing each other he’d never been happier. But he couldn’t help wondering if she felt the same.

Kristina had seemed a little distant at times at the Tony Awards the night before, but she had been acting odd for the last couple of weeks. Sometimes she seemed to be in a world of her own and didn’t say a lot. David knew he had been away a lot but Kristina understood, she knew what his career meant to him and that he needed to do this. Kristina’s business seemed to be going well and she was getting new clients all the time, so it couldn’t be work that was bothering her. He wondered if maybe they had rushed their relationship.

They had only been dating for 6 weeks before they moved in together. Kristina had been renting a small apartment when she had met David, but then a water pipe burst in the apartment above her and had seriously damaged her ceiling and water had seeped down through the walls. Kristina had to move out while repairs were made to her home and David had offered her his spare room. It wasn’t long before the repairs were made, but by then David and Kristina’s relationship had developed into something more serious and she no longer slept in the spare room. So Kristina had given notice on the apartment and had moved the rest of her belongings in with David.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sebastien heard laughing in the lobby and looked up to see Katy had returned to the hotel and was with the same man he had seen her with earlier on. He watched as they went to the reception desk and were both handed keys before disappearing in to the elevator. Sebastien smiled to himself as he realised that having a key each meant they were obviously in separate rooms. So maybe he wasn’t her boyfriend, just a friend. Perhaps Sebastien could try starting up a conversation with her again, but he was still a little wary about approaching her again.
Sebastien didn’t need to worry though. A short time later Katy reappeared from the elevator and made her way in to the lounge. She looked over in Sebastien’s direction and smiled. Sebastien politely smiled back and watched her as she went to the bar and bought a drink. She then surprised him by walking straight over to him.
“Do you mind if I sit here?”
“No, of course not.” Sebastien replied, clearing a space on the table and moving all his music notes.
“Thanks.” Katy replied, as she sat down next to Sebastien and placed her drink on the table. “What’s all that? Work?”
“Sort of.” Sebastien replied. “I’m a songwriter, most of the time I write songs for other people. But at the moment I’m writing my own songs.”
“Oh, so you must be pretty good if people pay you to write songs for them!” Katy said, before taking a sip of her drink. “Would I have heard of any of them?”
Sebastian started to name some of the artists that he had written songs for and could see Katy was impressed when she recognised some of the names and had heard some of his songs. Sebastien was surprised at how different Katy was acting toward him compared to the other night. He wasn’t sure why and he didn’t really care, he was just glad she was actually talking to him. He was still curious as to why she had lied about her name to him, but he still didn’t know her well enough to ask such a question and was sure he’d find out in time.
Sebastien and Katy had been chatting for about half an hour when Sebastien noticed her friend enter the Lounge and make his way over to them. Katy had introduced them to each other. His name was Carlos and he was her friend. Sebastien thought the day couldn’t get any better but things were soon short lived.
“Abby we need to leave now.” Carlos had said. “They‘ve just bought our cases downstairs.”
“It was nice talking with you, Sebastien but I have a plane to catch.” Abigail said, as she stood up and shook his hand. “I hope the song writing works out for you and I hope you get the record deal.”
“Thank you.” Sebastien replied, shaking her hand. “Off on your holidays?”
“No.” she replied. “I’m moving to Spain.”
“Oh, right.” was all Sebastien could manage to say, trying not to hide his disappointment. “I wish you the best of luck. Abby.”
She looked at him suddenly realising that Carlos had called her Abby in front of him and she had introduced herself as Katy.
“I’m sorry but I really have to go.”
Sebastien’s heart sank as he watched Abby leave the hotel with Carlos. Another woman who was walking out of his life.
***** CHAPTER 11 *****
Urs and Stephanie had been busy all day, rehearsing for a new concert and going through the changes on several songs just as Urs had predicted. It had been a long day and Urs was looking forward to getting home, but he needed to talk to Stephanie. He had been thinking about how he could ask her out and still wasn’t sure how to go about it.
They were in the car and Urs was driving Stephanie home again. Neither of them had spoken for several minutes, both were tired and they had been singing all day. Urs was the first to break the silence.
“Stephanie, I’ve been thinking about what you said yesterday. I think maybe you’re right.”
“What are you talking about?” Stephanie asked, resting her head back and closing her eyes. “Right about what?”
“It’s time I stopped living like a recluse.” Urs replied. “I need to start dating again.”
Stephanie looked at Urs not quite believing what she had just heard.
“As long as you’re sure.” Stephanie had said, calmly. “I don’t want you to feel as if I’ve badgered you in to this.”
“You haven’t.” Urs said, as he pulled up outside Stephanie’s apartment. “If I wasn’t ready then I wouldn’t have said it. So will you have dinner with me tomorrow night?”
Stephanie was secretly screaming for joy but somehow managed to restrain herself from jumping up and down in her seat.
“I would love to have dinner with you, Urs.” Stephanie replied, smiling at him.
“Okay, well I’ll see you tomorrow and we’ll sort out the details then.” Urs said, kissing Stephanie on the cheek. “Goodnight.”
Stephanie had said goodnight to Urs and watched him drive off in to the night. She couldn’t believe that he had asked her out to dinner. She’d had known him for several years and nothing had ever happened between them. Stephanie had thought it might have been the age gap between them. But then Urs had started seeing Aimee and Stephanie had thought she would never get another chance with Urs. Now things were looking up for her. She made her way inside and had already started to think about what she was going to wear on her first date with Urs.
Urs couldn’t believe he had asked Stephanie out. He had spent all day thinking about asking her but didn’t think he would really do it. He thought he would be nervous but it wasn’t as bad as he thought it would be. But now as he drove home he was starting to worry about what might happen. What if things didn’t work out the way Stephanie had hoped and it affected their friendship? Or what if he found that he and Stephanie got on better than ever? Would that be such a bad thing? Urs was already starting to have regrets. If he was going to ask anyone out for dinner he was hoping that it would’ve been Kristina. But she had a boyfriend. He could only hope that one day he would see her again and maybe next time she would be single. Well at least he knew he was ready to move on, he had a date tomorrow, but not with the one he really wanted. How on earth did he get himself in to this situation?
************************************
Carlos and Abigail’s plane had touched down at Madrid Barajas International Airport and they were waiting for their luggage. Abigail couldn’t stop smiling, she had never felt happier and she didn’t care who knew about it. Abigail could feel her confidence rushing back to her as soon as her feet had touched Spanish soil. There was no more worrying about Brian; he was in Paris and she was in Spain, he would never find her.
Carlos and Abigail collected their luggage and made their way out of the air port and found a taxi. As they sat in the car Carlos looked at Abigail. She hadn’t stopped smiling and he felt his heart melt when he saw how happy she was. She had only been in Spain twenty minutes and already he could see the difference in her. He knew she would be happy here with him.
“I have to buy a few things in town.” Carlos said, looking at Abigail. “Would you like to come with me or did you want to stay at the house and unpack your things?”
“Oh I’d love to come in to town with you.” Abigail replied, still smiling. “I can unpack my things anytime but I want to see where you live and see what the area is like.”
“Well, I need to buy some food for tonight as I have nothing in the house.” Carlos said, taking her hand. “But as soon as we have done that I will take you for a drive and show you some of our local sights.”
“That sounds like fun.” Abigail said, grinning more than ever. “I can see I’m really going to like it here.”
For the remainder of the journey Carlos told her a little about his home town and pointed out several landmarks to her and the stories behind them. Abigail listened intently, hanging on to his every word. She really couldn’t wait to start her new life here.
A short time later the car pulled up outside some large white gates. Carlos leant through the open window and entered a security code and the gates started to open. As the car continued down the gravel driveway Abigail tried to take it all in. It was a huge white villa, with balconies and terraces, greenery everywhere, a rockery garden and water fountains. Abigail was amazed at the size of it. It was bigger than she had expected, a lot bigger.
“You live here?” Abigail said, sounding shocked as she stepped out of the car. “On your own?”
“Yes.” Carlos replied, as he paid the driver. “Do you like it?”
“Like it?” Abigail said, as she picked up her suitcases. “I love it!”
Carlos led the way to the front door and let Abigail go inside first. Abigail was speechless as she put her luggage down and looked around the large entrance hall. It was even bigger than her bedroom back home, with archways leading off in every direction. She looked at Carlos, he nodded in the direction of a doorway and let her explore the house. She slowly made her way through the house, looking in each room, noticing that there were marble floors everywhere. Each room was elegantly decorated in white or pale creams, making it feel cool and airy. Carlos followed her as she made her way outside. Abigail was stunned with everything she saw, the more and more she saw of the house the more she was surprised. It had 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a tennis court, a Jacuzzi, a heated swimming pool, a barbeque, a sauna; the list went on and on.
“What did you say you do again?” Abigail asked, as they stood on one of the terraces looking over the mountains. “You sing?”
“Yes.” Carlos replied. “I’m a professional opera singer.”
“You must have an incredible voice.” Abigail said, turning to face him. “They must pay you a lot if you can afford to live like this!”
Carlos led Abigail back inside the house, where he showed her to her room. While Abigail looked around her room Carlos had gone back to the entrance hall and collected her cases and brought them to her. She had quickly changed into some clean clothes after all the travelling and Carlos and Abigail drove in to town.
PostSubject: Chapter 11 Part 2 & Chapter 12   ~ LOVE IS BLIND ~  EmptyFri Aug 14, 2009 7:43 pm
Kristina was still staring out the window daydreaming, when the phone rang. She picked it up thinking it would be another client.
“Is that Miss Sanders?” came the voice at the end of the phone.
“Yes, speaking.” Kristina replied.
“Miss Sanders, my name’s Eugene Mardell. I’m calling from the Australian Opera Company and I believe you’ve been dealing with one of my colleagues at our Milan office, Joel, about a David Miller.”
As soon as Kristina heard the words ‘Australian Opera Company’ her mind was clear and she was concentrating on every word Eugene was saying.
“Yes… yes alright…. No that’s fine. Yes… I’ll be sure to tell him…. Thank you. Goodbye.”
Kristina put the phone down before jumping up out of her chair and screaming. David had got the part of Tony in West Side Story, she had to tell him the good news. Kristina turned to pick up the phone but all of a sudden she felt a shooting pain in her head and behind her eyes. She put her hands up to her head, the pain bringing tears to her eyes. After a few seconds it passed but then she began to feel dizzy and nauseous. She reached out for the edge of the desk to steady herself and sat back down in her chair. Kristina had been getting bad headaches for a couple of weeks now but the pain behind her eyes and the sick feeling was something new. She knew if she told David he would make her go to the doctors but she didn’t see the point. It was only a headache, she took tablets, sometimes they worked, sometimes they didn’t. But she was a little worried about the pain behind her eyes. Maybe she had just stood up from her chair too quickly. If it happened again Kristina would go to the doctors, but right now she wanted to talk to David..
Kristina picked up the phone and dialled David’s mobile number but there was no reply. She thought about leaving him a message but then decided against it. Maybe she would surprise him when he got home. Kristina started to think about how she could tell him and went to the kitchen to see what food they had in the fridge. She could cook him a nice meal and then tell him but she didn’t have all the ingredients she wanted. Kristina couldn’t really go out shopping and cook some big fancy dinner, she had work to do. But then David had been so thoughtful to her yesterday that she went back in to her office, turned off her laptop and switched the answer phone on. There was nothing that couldn’t wait and this was much more important. Kristina slipped her shoes on, grabbed her purse and jacket and headed for the door.
Kristina was just about to leave when she saw her coat hanging up. The same coat that she had wore to the Tony Awards at the weekend. She really needed to get it cleaned, as she had noticed a slight smell of cigar smoke on it. It must have been from where it was hanging up all night. Kristina quickly picked up the coat and decided to drop it off at the dry cleaners. She checked the pockets to make sure she hadn’t left anything in there and was surprised when she felt something in one of the pockets. Kristina grasped the small object in her hand and took it out of the pocket. It was Urs’ cufflink. She had forgotten all about it. Kristina wondered if she should have phoned the venue to tell them that she had found it, maybe Urs was looking for it. After all, it did have his initials on it and someone had obviously gone to a lot of trouble to have that done for him. Kristina wanted to keep it for herself, she didn’t know why. Don’t be silly, of course she knew why. She wanted to give it to him personally. She wanted an excuse to see him, to speak to him. I wonder what he’s doing now, she thought to herself. It would be Monday evening in Paris. Kristina shook her head, almost as if she was trying to shake all thoughts of him from her mind. She couldn’t deny the feelings she had when she thought about him, but she was with David and she loved him with all her heart. How could the feelings she have for Urs be anything more than a crush? She was acting foolishly. Kristina put the cufflink in her purse and decided to call the venue when she got back from grocery shopping. What did she need another mans cufflink for? How could she even think about another man when she had David?
It was early evening in Madrid and Carlos and Abigail were just sitting down to their first home cooked meal, made by Carlos. They had been out for much of the afternoon, food shopping as planned, and then a drive around the countryside.
“I hope you’re hungry.” Carlos said, as he placed a large pot on the table. “I think I cooked a little too much.”
“I’m starving, I haven’t eaten anything since breakfast.” Abigail replied. “What is it? It smells gorgeous.”
“It‘s Cocido Madrileno. It’s stewed beef, chicken, ham, belly pork, chick peas, cabbage, chorizo and morcilla. It’s very popular.”
Carlos then took two small soup bowls and filled them with some of the stock from the pot.
“Hmmm, this is delicious.” Abigail said, before taking another mouthful. “You’ll have to show me how to make it.”
“It’s an old family recipe.” Carlos whispered. “My mother would kill me if I told anyone.”
“Okay then.” Abigail whispered back. “You’ll just have to do all the cooking.”
Carlos and Abigail joked and laughed throughout the whole evening. They spent the next two hours talking about friends, family, likes, dislikes, their childhood, school, careers, their love for singing, just about anything and everything.
“Have you ever been to an opera before?” Carlos asked, as he stood up and started to clear the plates away.
“Brian was never what you would call a music lover.” Abigail replied, getting up from her chair and following Carlos in to the kitchen. “I’ve always wanted to go and see one but, well, you know what Brian was like.”
“All too well, but enough about him.” Carlos said, taking Abigail’s hand and leading her in the lounge. “Tomorrow you will see your first opera, starring none other than me, the famous Carlos Marin in ‘The Barber of Seville’. How does that sound?”
“I can’t wait.” Abigail said smiling, but then her smile slowly disappeared.
“What’s wrong?” Carlos asked. “You do want to go to the opera, don’t you?”
“Of course I do.” Abigail replied, looking at Carlos. “But opera’s are very special occasions and I don’t have anything to wear to something like that.”
“Fear not. I have already thought of that.” Carlos said, sitting down on the couch. “I have rehearsals in the afternoon, but first thing tomorrow morning we will going shopping and buy you a dress for the opera.”
“Carlos, you have already done so much for me,” Abigail said, sitting down next to him. “I can’t let you keep buying me things like this. You’ve already paid for my stay at the Hotel Bastille, then there was the money in the luggage locker, my plane ticket and now you’re letting me live here until I can find a place of my own. I can’t let you buy me more things when I have no way of paying you back.”
“Firstly, I want to do this for you and I don‘t expect a single penny from you.” Carlos said, gently squeezing her hand. “Secondly, after the way Brian has treated you all these months I think it is about time that you let someone spoil you. And thirdly, you can stay here as long as you like.” Carlos leaned closer to Abigail and caressed her cheek. “If I am completely honest with you, I wish you would stay here with me permanently.”
“I’d like to stay here, but I don’t know if it would be fair on you. You‘re used to living on your own and here I am invading your privacy.” Abigail said, looking away. “Things have been great between us these last couple of days. But living together on a permanent basis, what if we don’t get on? What if we argue?”
“I don’t think we will argue, I‘m sure of it.” Carlos replied. “And I’m more than happy to share my home with you, I would not have invited you here otherwise. Why don’t we just see how things go? If you are really not happy then we will look for another place for you to live. Is it a deal?”
“It’s a deal.” Abigail replied, getting up from the couch. “Do you mind if I go to bed? I’m really tired and if we’re going out tomorrow morning I should get some sleep.”
“Of course, I don’t mind.” Carlos replied, standing up. “Can you remember where your room is?”
Abigail nodded and then thought about it, no she couldn’t remember. The villa was huge and there were so many rooms and hallways, she was bound to get lost.
“Actually I’m not sure.” Abigail said laughing. “Do you think you could show me again?”
“Not a problem.” Carlos replied, leading the way. “It took me a while to find my way around here. Give it a few days and you’ll know this place like the back of your hand.”
Abigail followed Carlos as he led her to the centre of the house, upstairs and along one of the hallways. As she walked behind him she couldn’t help admiring his body; his jet black wavy hair, broad shoulders, slim waist and his toned bum. Abigail was so busy looking at Carlos’ body and not paying attention to where he was going that when he stopped at her door and turned to face her, she bumped in to him.
“Sorry.” she said blushing, hoping that he hadn’t noticed her looking at him. “I didn’t realise this was it.”
“No apology needed.” Carlos said smiling, as he opened her door and stepped aside. He then noticed that Abigail’s cases were still by the wardrobe. “I completely forgot about unpacking our things.” he added. “Do you want to borrow a t-shirt of mine?”
Abigail looked at Carlos a little confused. He noticed the expression on her face.
“I just thought that you could borrow a t-shirt of mine to sleep in.” Carlos said as stepped out in to the hall. “That way you don’t have to unpack everything now.”
“Oh. Yes that would be great.” Abigail said, smiling. “As long as it’s no trouble.”
“No trouble at all.” Carlos said, winking at her. “I’ll just go to my room and get one for you.”
Abigail popped her head out of the doorway and watched Carlos walk to his room. She smiled to herself when she realised that his room was in fact next doors to hers. Abigail couldn’t believe that she had found someone as kind hearted as Carlos. She went back in to her room and started humming to herself as she pulled down the bed covers.
When he returned, Carlos stood at the doorway watching Abigail as she made the bed, humming to herself. She really was the most beautiful woman he had ever met, with her long dark hair, her sparkling green eyes and the most dazzling smile. Carlos hoped that she would change her mind about finding a place of her own. He had bought this huge villa in the hope of finding that special woman to share it with; to marry her, have children and share his life with her. He looked at Abigail, knowing that she was that woman, but wondered if he could ever be her man.
Abigail looked up and saw Carlos standing at the door. “What time tomorrow?” she asked, walking towards him.
“It’s probably best to get there early.” Carlos replied. “You might not see anything you like, so we may need to go elsewhere. How about we leave at 8.30am?”
“Okay that’s fine with me, and thank you for this?” Abigail replied, taking the t-shirt from him.
“Glad to help.” Carlos said, leaning down to her and kissing her on the cheek. “Goodnight Abby.”
“Carlos.” Abigail said, reaching out for his arm.
“Is something wrong?” he asked.
“No.” Abigail replied, moving closer to him. “I wanted to say thank you. Thank you for everything. I know I’ve said it before, but you don’t know how much it means to me.” Abigail slid her arms around his waist and hugged him tightly. “I’ll never forget what you’ve done for me.”
Carlos put his arms around her and gently rested his chin on her head. He didn’t know what to say. He wanted to tell her that he loved her, that he didn’t want her to ever leave, that he wanted her to stay with him but he couldn’t be sure how she felt about him. But for now he would just be grateful that she was here with him.
“You had better get some sleep.” Carlos said, gently pulling away from her and looking down in to her eyes. “It‘s going to be another long day tomorrow.”
Abigail looked up at Carlos. She wanted to kiss him but didn’t know how he would react. She knew she had only just left Brian but their relationship was over a long time before she met Carlos. Carlos had told her he wanted her to stay with him but was it out of affection or pity? Did he just want to play her knight in shining armour or did he feel the same way about her as she did him?
“Goodnight Carlos.”
“Goodnight Abby.”
***********************
Kristina had dropped her coat off at the dry cleaners and had managed to buy all the ingredients she needed to make David’s favourite meal; homemade pizza with all his favourite toppings. She knew that as soon as he saw the meal, he would guess that she was up to something. She smiled to herself as she walked in to the kitchen and started to unpack the groceries. She could just imagine the look in his face when he found out that he was going to be playing Tony in West Side Story.
Kristina couldn’t be happier for him, although she couldn’t help wondering how soon he would have to leave for Milan. Opening night was in July and it was January now. That only gave him 5 or 6 months for rehearsals. She hoped he wouldn’t have to be in Milan all that time, they had never been apart for longer than two weeks. David had travelled to Europe numerous times for auditions but up until now he had only ever been offered parts in American productions. If David was going to be offered more roles abroad, Kristina would have to get used to the fact that she might not see him as often as she’d like. She only hoped that it wouldn’t affect their relationship. She’d seen it happen to too many of her friends in this business. But Kristina had known what she was getting herself into when she started dating David. This was one of the reasons she had made a rule never to date clients.
Kristina put the pizza base in the fridge ready for later on and went back in to the lounge and sat down on the couch. Her head was still thumping. It wasn’t as bad as it was earlier but she was feeling sleepy. Kristina looked at her watch, she still had two or three hours until David would be home. She decided to have a lie down on the couch; she rested her head on one of the cushions and closed her eyes. Just a short nap and then she would get dinner ready.
***** CHAPTER 13 *****
Abigail opened the door and stepped out on to the patio; from here you could see right over the town and see the mountains in the distance, the view was breath taking. She had been standing there for several minutes when she sensed someone was watching her. Abigail turned to see Brian behind her. Sheer terror swept over her, somehow he had found her and she knew that if he got his hands on her the beatings would be worse than before. She cautiously backed away from him, questions buzzing through her mind; how on earth he had found her? Had Mrs Lavelle told him? Had Kristina told him? She didn’t care she just had to get away from him. Where was Carlos? Brian didn’t say a word, he didn’t need to; his eyes said it all. He wasn’t going to let her get away from him again and he would make her pay for leaving him and looking a fool. Abigail quickly turned and ran down the steps leading to the road. But when she reached the bottom she found the gate was locked. She looked back to see Brian at the top of the steps, he wasn’t in any hurry; he knew she couldn’t get away. Abigail quickly glanced around, trying to find an escape route. She could see a small path along the edge of the garden; she didn’t know where it led to but the only other way out was back up the steps to where Brian was. Without giving it another thought Abigail ran down the path, she kept running and running not daring to look back in case she tripped and he caught up with her. As she turned the corner she ran straight in to Brian. Where did he come from? How did he get here, the steps went in the other direction. Brian still didn’t say a word to Abigail, she knew what he was thinking; he had played mind games with her before. He got his pleasure from letting her own mind think up what he was going to do her. Abigail turned to run from him but he grabbed her by her wrists and threw her against the wall. She used all her strength to try and kick or punch him but it was useless, he was too strong for her. She started to scream, hoping that someone would hear her.
Carlos had just started to drift off to sleep when he heard something. He laid there for a second trying to make out what the noise was. Usually the grounds were quiet and he didn’t recognise the noise. Then he heard it again, it was a woman’s voice. Carlos shot up out of bed. Abby, he thought. He quickly put on a pair of boxers and ran into her room and switched on the light. Abigail was still in bed but she was having a nightmare, thrashing around on the bed. Carlos sat on the edge of the bed and tried to grab hold of her arms but she fought against him, thinking it was Brian.
“Brian!” she screamed, punching her fists in the air. “No, let me go.”
“Abby wake up.” Carlos said, still trying to hold on to her arms to prevent her from hitting him. “Abby, listen to me, you’re dreaming. Abby.”
Abigail opened her eyes, gasping for breath. .
“Brian?” she said, looking puzzled, tears running down her face,
“No it’s me, Carlos.” he whispered, as he pulled her into his arms. “You were having a nightmare.”
“Carlos? But… I don’t understand.” Abigail said between sobs. “You mean it was all a bad dream?”
“Yes, it was all a bad dream.” Carlos replied, brushing her wet hair off her face from where she had been crying.
“But it seemed so real.” she said quietly sniffing as she leant her head against his bare chest. “I really thought he was going to kill me this time.”
“He can’t hurt you anymore Abby.” Carlos said, gently running his hand up and down her back. “Not in your dreams and not while you’re with me. I won’t let him lay another finger on you.”
“God forbid if Brian ever finds me, there will be hell to pay.” Abigail said, closing her eyes tightly. “And you won’t always be here to protect me Carlos.”
“Well I’m not planning on going anywhere.” Carlos said, pulling away from her and cupping her face in his hands. “Not without you.”
“Why are you doing all this for me?” Abigail asked, looking at him. “You could have just given me the address for a women’s refuge. No normal person would go to such great lengths and do all this for a stranger.”
“I thought we agreed that we were friends, not strangers.” Carlos replied, trying to avoid the question. He couldn’t tell her why he had done all this, or could he? “Friends help each other out.”
Abigail stared in to his honey brown eyes, she wanted to kiss him so much. If she was going to stay here she had to know if he felt the same way about her. There was no way she was going to be able to sleep under the same roof with him, knowing how she felt about him and not being able to do a thing about it.
“What would you say if I said I wanted us to be more than friends?” Abigail said quietly.
Carlos looked at Abigail and smiled. “I would say you have been reading my mind.”
“Really?” Abigail said, sounding surprised.
“Really.” Carlos replied. “But I didn’t think you would want to start another relationship, not so soon.”
“You couldn’t call what me and Brian had a relationship.“ Abigail said sighing. “We were over a long time ago.”
“So does that mean what I think it means?” Carlos asked.
“I don’t know. Despite what you think, I can’t read minds.” Abigail said, giggling. “You had better just tell me.”
Carlos felt a huge smile appear on his face when Abigail giggled. It was the sweetest sound, to hear her laugh after knowing all she had been through. Carlos thought about how much he cared for her and before he realised what he had done, the words came spilling out. “I love you, Abby.”
Abigail looked at Carlos, with a look of shock on her face. It soon changed to a look of understanding and then warmth.
“I love you too.” she said softly.
Carlos put a hand up to her face and caressed her cheek. “You don’t know how happy you’ve made me, hearing you say that.”
“I think I can guess.” Abigail said, smiling as she put her hand on Carlos’ hand.
Carlos leant closer to Abigail, his mouth hovering over hers. He wanted to kiss her but he wanted to be sure that she was ready. When Abigail didn’t object Carlos gently brushed his lips over hers. He felt her hands on his chest as he pressed his body against her. After a few seconds Carlos gently pulled away.
“I think I should go now.” he said, getting up from the bed. “You need some sleep.”
Abigail watched him get up and turn off the light before leaving the room. He looked just as good in boxers as he did in jeans and a shirt. Abigail laid down and thought about what Carlos had just said to her; he loved her. Spain was getting better and better all the time.
*****************************************
David put the key in the lock and let himself in to the apartment; straight away he knew something was different. Usually he could smell cooking coming from the kitchen or hear the stereo in the background. But he couldn’t smell any food, the apartment was deadly quiet and in complete darkness.
“Krissy? Are you here?” he called out, closing the door.
David switched on the lights and smiled to himself when he saw her; Kristina was fast asleep on the couch. He hung his jacket up and walked over to the couch, crouching down beside her.
“Krissy?” he said softly, as he gently rubbed her shoulder. “Wake up.”
“Huh? David, what are you doing home?” Kristina asked, rubbing her eyes and trying to make out the numbers on the wall clock. “What time is it?”
“It’s a little after seven." he replied, after checking his watch.
“Oh crap!” Kristina said, quickly getting up from the couch. “I was going to cook you your favourite meal but I was so tired, I was only going to have a short nap. I’ve been asleep hours.”
“It doesn’t matter Krissy.” David said, reaching out to steady Kristina as he noticed her start to sway. “Are you feeling alright? You look a bit pale.”
“I’m fine.” Kristina replied. “Like I said, I was tired I just needed a rest. I‘ll go and start on dinner.”
Kristina went to turn towards the kitchen but she felt dizzy again and stumbled back into David.
“Okay, that’s it! You’re going to bed and I’ll do dinner.” David said as he picked her up effortlessly and carried her to the bedroom. “You’re not pregnant are you?” David asked, out of the blue. “I mean I know we’ve been careful, but it would be great if you were.”
“No, I’m not pregnant David.” Kristina replied sleepily. “It’s just the odd headache and they keep me awake sometimes. It will soon pass, they always do.”
“You’ve had them before?” David asked as he sat her down on the edge of the bed and helped her to get undressed.
“A few times.” Kristina replied as she started to undo her blouse. “Honestly David, it’s just a headache. It’s not worth worrying about.”
“How long have you had them?” David asked, slipping the nightshirt over her head. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Only a couple of weeks, and it’s just a headache David.” she replied. “You don’t tell me about every headache you get do you?”
“No, but something’s not right and I’m not going to argue with you Krissy.” David said, pulling the bed sheet up over her. “If you still feel like this is in the morning then I’m driving you to the doctors myself. Now you get some rest. I‘ll give you a shout when dinner is ready.”
David kissed Kristina on the forehead, turned out the light and headed for the kitchen. He was a little worried about the headaches that Kristina had been getting. Maybe that was why she had been acting so strangely the last couple of weeks. He just hoped it was nothing serious.
***** CHAPTER 14 *****
Carlos yawned as he looked at himself in the mirror. He was getting ready to leave for the theatre where he would be performing in the Barber of Seville later that evening. After leaving Abigail’s room last night, Carlos had laid awake for some time thinking about Abigail. Carlos had been wanting to kiss Abigail for a long time. But now each time he kissed her he wanted more, especially now that he knew how she felt about him; she loved him. Carlos knew it was much too soon for anything more to happen between them and he didn’t want her to feel pressured in to anything. He had left his door ajar so that he could hear if Abigail had any more nightmares, but she had slept peacefully for the remainder of the night. Carlos had then woken up early, long before the alarm was due to go off. He had been unable to get back to sleep, knowing that Abigail was asleep in the next room. But Carlos had managed to get a couple of hours sleep between the shopping trip he and Abigail made earlier that morning and the rehearsals that he had to attend later that afternoon. While Carlos had been rehearsing Abigail had been walking around the grounds of the villa, getting used to the area. After having the night mare that Brian had found her, she wanted to know her way around the area, just in case she needed to make an escape. She was probably worrying about nothing, but it was better to be safe than sorry.
“Are you ready Abigail?” Carlos asked, as he knocked lightly on her door.
A few seconds later the door opened and there stood Abigail in a long red flowing dress.
“I’m ready.” Abigail replied, stepping out in to the hallway. “How do I look?”
“Absolutely stunning.” Carlos said, holding out his hand to her. “You’re going to be the most beautiful woman there.”
Abigail blushed, as she took Carlos’ hand and followed him outside to the car that was waiting to take them to the ‘Teatro Real’.
Abigail was thankful that it was a short drive to the Teatro Real, where Carlos would be performing. She had never been to a big social event of this kind and was starting to feel nervous. Carlos noticed her uneasiness, Abigail couldn’t seem to get comfortable and kept playing with the curls in her hair; he gently squeezed her hand reassuringly. Abigail looked at Carlos and saw him smiling at her and soon forgot about being nervous. The car pulled up outside the theatre and Carlos escorted Abigail to her seat in the front row. He wanted her to have the best view possible. He kissed her gently on the lips before quickly making his way to his dressing room to get ready for his performance.
It wasn’t long before the opera began and Abigail was glued to her seat watching every move Carlos made and listening to every note he sang. At every opportunity he had, Carlos had looked at Abigail checking to make sure she was still there and that she was alright. But Abigail was just fine, she was enjoying every moment of it.
The evening soon came to an end and Carlos had asked one of the members of staff to show Abigail to a small room backstage after the performance. Abigail didn’t have to wait long while Carlos removed his make up and changed in to his normal clothes and they were soon sitting in the car on their way back home.
“So what did you think of the performance?” Carlos asked, looking at Abigail.
“I loved it.” Abigail replied. “But if I’m honest there were times I didn’t understand what was going on, I was a little lost. I mean the singing and the voices were amazing but my Spanish is awful.”
“I’m sorry Abby, I wasn’t thinking.” Carlos said, frowning. “I should’ve explained the plot to you, then at least you would have had some idea of what was happening.”
“Maybe I could see it again?” Abigail said, smiling. “Perhaps I could come and see you rehearse next time.”
“Of course you can.” Carlos replied. “You can come and watch me rehearse anytime you want to.”
The car pulled into the drive way and pulled up outside the front of the villa. Carlos helped Abigail out of the car and they made their way inside.
“Would you like to anything to eat or drink?” Carlos asked as he closed the front door.
“No thank you, Carlos.” Abigail replied. “I don’t want to see ungrateful but would you mind if I went to bed? I’m very tired, I think it must be all the fresh air I’ve been getting.”
“You don’t have to ask me.” Carlos said, taking her hand in his. “You live here too now. If you’re tired, go to bed. It’s your home, please treat it as such.”
“Thank you.” Abigail said quietly as she looked up in to his eyes. “And thank you for a wonderful evening. I enjoyed every minute of it.”
“Even though you didn’t understand all of it?” Carlos asked, as he wiggled his eyebrows at her, making Abigail giggle.
“Yes, even though I didn’t understand all of it.” Abigail said, smiling at him. “But I thought you were brilliant. I’d love to hear you sing again.”
“That won’t be a problem.” Carlos said, as he led the way to her room. “You can join me at the rehearsals any time.”
Carlos and Abigail stopped outside her room. “I’m glad you enjoyed this evening.” Carlos said, running a hand down her arm. We’ll have to do it again. Maybe next time we can go to an opera where I’m not performing.”
“That would be brilliant.” Abigail replied, before yawning. “I’m sorry. I didn’t realise I was so tired.”
“Don’t worry.” Carlos said, before he himself yawned. “It‘s been a long day for both of us. I‘ll see you in the morning.” Carlos bent down and softly kissed her goodnight.
Abigail closed her door and sat down on the end of the bed. She took off her shoes and started to get undressed. After several minutes of struggling with the zip on the back of her dress, Abigail realised that she was going to have to ask Carlos for his help. She made her way to Carlos’ room and gently knocked on the door. She had noticed he was tired earlier and just hoped that he hadn’t already fallen asleep otherwise she would have to spend all night literally stuck in this dress. Abigail was just about to knock for a second time when Carlos opened the door, wearing nothing but a pair of boxers. She stood there staring at him for several seconds before Carlos spoke.
“Is everything alright?” Carlos asked.
Abigail suddenly remembered why she was there. “This is a little embarrassing.” she replied. “But I can’t seem to undo the zip on my dress. I was wondering if you could undo it for me.”
“Of course I can.” Carlos replied. “Come in here for a moment, the light will be better.”
Abigail followed Carlos in to his room and turned her back to him. Carlos pulled at the zip several times, trying to work it free. “It looks like there’s some material caught between the teeth on the zip.“ Carlos said, as he pulled on the zip again. “But I think I can get it free.”
Several minutes later and Carlos had managed to free the material and undo the zip.
“There. All done.” Carlos said, standing back. “Now you can finally get some sleep.”
While Carlos had been trying to undo her dress, Abigail had been thinking how she could tell him that she wanted to take things further in their relationship. But she was struggling to find the words. Then she remembered an old saying, actions speak louder than words. With that thought in mind, she turned to face Carlos and let her dress fall to the floor.
“Abigail, what are you doing?” Carlos said quietly, his eyes skimming over her body.
“What does it look like?” she replied, as she stepped out of her dress and placed her hands on his chest. “Are you still tired?”
Carlos slowly shook his head as Abigail guided him back towards the bed.
“Abby.” Carlos said, lightly gripping her arms stopping her from going any further. “Are you sure?”
“I’m sure.” she whispered as she kissed his neck, leaving a trail a of kisses, slowly moving down to his chest.
“I love you.” he whispered in her ear, as he wrapped his arms around her waist. “And I want to show you just how much I love you. If you’ll let me.”
“I love you too.” Abigail replied, as she caressed his cheek. “And the answer’s yes.”
Carlos picked her up in his arms and gently laid her down on the bed.
“Are you sure this is what you want?” he asked, looking down in to her sparking green eyes,
“Yes, I’m sure, Carlos.“ she said, looking up at him.
That night, Carlos made love to Abigail.
***** CHAPTER 15 *****
David opened the fridge to see what they had to eat; then he saw the pizza base on the shelf. He smiled to himself when he saw it. Kristina had told him she wanted to cook him his favourite meal but he never found out why. But knowing Kristina there must have been a good reason as to why she was cooking it, there always was. As he put all the toppings on the pizza and put it in the oven he thought about what the good news could be; he hoped it meant that he had got another role in a show. His thoughts soon drifted from the good news back to Kristina. The headaches she had been getting must be bad if they were keeping her awake. Maybe that’s why she had been acting strangely these last couple of weeks, she did look tired and kept losing her concentration.
As soon as the pizza was ready, David served dinner and took a plate in to Kristina. He put the plate down on the bedside table and sat down on the edge of the bed. Kristina was asleep, but even as she slept she still looked as if the headaches were causing her pain; she had a tensed look on her face. David wasn’t sure if he should wake her especially since she was so tired. But she had to eat and he didn’t want to make things worse by making her miss meals. David gently brushed a stray hair from her face, and with that slightest touch Kristina started to stir.
“David?” Kristina mumbled sleepily, as she looked up him.
“Hey beautiful.” he whispered. “Are you hungry? I’ve cooked pizza.”
“You found it then.” she said, smiling.
“You know me, I can always sniff out good food.” he said, caressing her cheek. “I guess you have something to tell me.”
“I do?” she said, looking puzzled.
“You always cook my favourite meal when you have something to tell me.” he said, winking at her. “So come on, eat up and tell me what’s happened.”
Kristina sat up in bed and David placed the tray of food on her lap.
“I had a call from a guy called Eugene Mardell earlier today.” she said, before taking a bite of pizza. “It was about one of the roles you auditioned for.”
“Eugene Mardell?” David said, “I don’t recognise the name. Who does he work for?”
“I’ve never spoken to him before.” Kristina said leaning back against the pillow. “I usually deal with Joel, but apparently Eugene works at the Australian Opera House office here in New York.”
“Australian Opera House!” David exclaimed, jumping up from the bed. “Does that mean I got the part? Am I the next Tony in West Side Story?”
“Yes, you got the part.” Kristina replied, grinning from ear to ear, at seeing David so happy. “They loved you, they said they knew you had the part as soon as they heard you, seeing the other entrants was just a formality. You did it babe.”
David sat down on the bed and hugged Kristina.
“Careful, you’re going to get pizza everywhere at this rate.” Kristina said, giggling as the pizza slid off the plate and on to the bed.
“Who cares about pizza when I’m the new Tony.” David said, picking up the plate and the remains of the pizza and placing them on the bedside table. “You know what this means, don’t you!”
Kristina knew all too well what it meant. It would mean that David’s career would finally take off and as he accepted more and more roles, she would begin to see him less and less. She tried not to show her disappointment as she smiled at him.
“I know what it means, Davey. And I know how long you’ve waited for this.” Kristina said, hugging him back, tears stinging her eyes. “I’m so proud of you.”
As they pulled away, David put his hand under her chin and lifted her face up to him.
“Are you crying?” he asked, noticing her watery eyes.
Kristina shook her head. “No, I’m just happy for you.”
“You know how much I love you, don’t you.” he said, before kissing her on the forehead. “I know this means I’ll be busier than ever and that I’ll have to travel a lot. But just remember I love you. And if we love each other, we will find a way to be together. We’ll be fine. Don’t worry okay?”
Kristina nodded as David laid on the bed next to her and wrapped his arms around her.
“I’ll always love you Krissy.” David whispered in to her ear. “No matter what happens, I’ll always love you.”
Those were the last words Kristina heard before she drifted off to sleep.
************************************
It was Tuesday morning and Stephanie was getting ready to leave for the concert hall. She had overslept; it was unlike her but she had been tossing and turning all night. She could only put it down to nerves about her first date with Urs. After all, she had wanted Urs for several years but had never gotten this close to having him. She didn’t think she would feel like this, it was all she had ever dreamt of since she first met Urs. So why was she so worried? Perhaps she was worried things wouldn’t turn out the way she wanted or that he wasn’t ready for a relationship and when things went wrong between them he would blame her for rushing him and he would never consider loving anyone again. Stephanie had to stop thinking like that. She had got her date with Urs and that’s all she should be thinking about now. If thing something happened she would deal with that when the time came.
Thoughts of Urs weren’t the only thing that had been keeping Stephanie awake. She had also been thinking about David, she wasn’t sure what to do about him. She had to admit he was very talented. Stephanie had been to see him in perform in several productions and was surprised that he hadn’t been offered more roles in major plays. He certainly deserved a chance to prove himself and Stephanie knew that she could do a lot for his career. Yet she was still worried about Kristina. She didn’t want to encourage anything between Urs and Kristina, but seeing as she had a date with Urs tonight, maybe she was over reacting. If everything went well on their date perhaps she would contact David.
***********************************
Urs was sitting outside Stephanie’s apartment block. He had already called up for her and she told him she was running late, and that she would be a few more minutes. While Urs was sitting waiting for her he was thinking about how he had gotten himself in to this situation. Urs had spent most of yesterday thinking about how he could ask Stephanie out, so it wasn’t done on impulse. Maybe he was trying to prove something to himself, that he could ask another woman out and not feel guilty about it; that he could be with another woman after Aimee. Urs wasn’t going to back out of the date, that wouldn’t be fair on Stephanie, but maybe afterwards he could just tell her that he had made a mistake, that it was too soon. Urs knew he would be lying to Stephanie if he told her that, but he couldn‘t tell her the real reason. That there was only one woman who had made him feel alive, made him start to feel human again, a woman who was beautiful both inside and out, a woman who made his pulse race and could make him feel like he was the only man in the room with just one look. Urs knew he was ready to love again but there was only one woman that he could ever imagine loving; and it wasn’t Stephanie.
“Okay, let’s go.” Stephanie said, as she got in the car and put her seat belt on. “Sorry about that but I didn’t get much sleep last night. That’s why I overslept.”
“That’s okay.” Urs replied as he pulled away from the kerb. “The traffic doesn’t look too bad so we should get there on time. How come you couldn‘t sleep? Is something bothering you?”
“If I’m completely honest with you I’m a little nervous about our date tonight.” Stephanie replied as she looked out the car window.
“Nervous?” Urs said, sounding surprised. “Why on earth would you be nervous? It’s not as if we don’t know each other. Just think of it as dinner with a friend and if anything happens we‘ll take it from there.”
Stephanie continued to look out the window. If she thought, he had said ‘if’ anything happens. She wanted it to happen but by the sounds of it Urs wasn’t so sure he did. And he certainly didn’t sounds nervous about the date. Or maybe he was looking forward to the date, that’s why he didn’t seem bothered about tonight. Stephanie kept that thought in her head as they made their way to the concert hall. She wasn’t going to worry about what might or might not happen tonight. As Urs said, if anything happens, they would take it from there. But Stephanie was going to try her hardest to make sure something did happen.
*************************************
Kristina had woken up early that morning with another painful headache. This time she had woken David and he had insisted she call the doctors. She tried to make out it was nothing, but David wouldn’t listen. He had said that if she didn’t ring the surgery then he would do it himself. Kristina had given in and phoned the doctors.
She got out of the car and looked up at the tall imposing building. She was nervous, she’d never liked doctors. But then who did? Kristina looked at David as he walked round from the drivers side of the car and took her hand.
“Come on it will be fine.” he said, gently squeezing it. “I’m right here with you. And you know Doctor Slater is a good man.”
Doctor Slater had been David’s family doctor for years, before he was born. When Kristina had moved to the area David had suggested she register with him. Kristina had never needed to see Doctor Slater before but she had met him several times at family dinners when her and David had visited his parents. She like Doctor Slater but that still didn’t change the fact that she hated doctors and that she felt as if she was about to be sick at any moment. David led her inside the building and they made their way to the waiting room.
***** CHAPTER 16 *****
“I asked you a question.” Kristina said, getting impatient when David didn‘t answer. “Who told you?”
“Lyndee.” David replied.
Lyndee was Kristina’s best friend, they had known each other since grade school. She had been there for her when everything had gone wrong with her and Harvey. Kristina, Harvey and Lyndee had all known each other at school. Kristina had started dating Harvey when they were just 17 years old. Everyone thought they were the perfect couple and that one day they would eventually marry. But neither of them were in a hurry and were happy to just stay as they were. Which was just as well.
Harvey had always wanted a career in music and all throughout school he had taken part in plays and musicals and had taken music lessons. He started up a band in school with three other friends, he sang lead vocals and played guitar. Kristina had to admit they were pretty good. When they had left school Harvey and Kristina had moved in together. It was a small rented apartment, nothing special, but they made it their own. They had both got full time jobs, but for extra money Harvey would travel around to the local bars and clubs bringing in extra money and at the same time trying to get some local record companies to listen to their work. No one was interested in their music so Harvey decided that they needed to move and try their luck else where. The other band members were all for it, but Kristina had given up a job and friends she loved so that she could be with Harvey.
So Kristina moved 300 miles to another area and started again. Kristina found it hard to make new friends and she didn’t enjoy the job as much as her old one. She didn’t go out much as Harvey was always busy rehearsing. The only time she went out was to see Harvey perform but sometimes she was too tired. She had been doing lots of overtime to help pay the bills. The cost of living was more expensive here and the money Harvey was making was going towards new equipment for the band. They were convinced that’s why people weren’t taking them seriously. It might have been a coincidence but a few weeks after they bought their new equipment they were approached by a record company. But there was a catch, they were only interested in Harvey, they didn’t want the other band members. Kristina had tried to talk Harvey in to staying with the band and waiting for another deal as the other members were his friends and they had been loyal to him. But Harvey was more interested in making money and having his music career. He had signed the record deal alone, and told her he had to go away for a couple of months to record an album. He was given an advance salary and told Kristina he would send her some money to help with bills and so they could move to a better apartment. But no money ever came and Kristina never heard from him again; the last time she saw him was on TV, accepting an award for his third album which had just gone Gold. Kristina had fallen behind on the rent, and no amount of overtime would pay off the bills. Kristina had called Lyndee as she didn’t want her family to know what had happened. Lyndee had paid off her debts and Kristina had moved back to New York and moved in with Lyndee until she had sorted out a new job and paid back everything she owed her.
David hadn’t meant to tell Kristina that he knew about Harvey. He was sure that Kristina would eventually tell him but until then he wasn’t going to mention it. Yet he had let it slip and now he would have to tell her.
“Lyndee!” Kristina exclaimed.
“Don’t be angry with her.” David said, looking worried. He hadn’t meant for Lyndee to get in trouble. “She was only looking out for you.”
“And how do you work that out?” Kristina replied. “You wait until I see her. That woman never could stop talking.”
“I ran in to her when I was in town one day.” David said, putting his seat belt on. “It was about a week or two after we’d started seeing each other. She tried ward me off, saying that you’d already been badly hurt by someone in my line of work. She told me what happened with Harvey. Lyndee didn’t want to see you go through it all again, so she basically told me that if I hurt you, she’d hurt me. ”
Kristina couldn’t help but laugh. That was exactly the type of thing Lyndee would say.
“Does that mean I’m forgiven?” David asked, when he saw her smile.
“There’s nothing to forgive.” Kristina replied. “I’m sorry for snapping at you but that’s a part of my life I’d rather forget about. The less people that know about it the better.”
“I won’t mention it again.” David said, putting his hand on her knee. “I promise.”
David and Kristina drove back to their apartment in silence. Kristina was trying to forget about Harvey and hoped that things with her and David wouldn’t turn out the same way. David was secretly hoping that Kristina was pregnant. He wanted nothing more than to be a father to her children.
*******************************
It was early evening in Paris and Urs and Stephanie had just arrived at ’St.Jacques’. Urs had phoned and reserved a table earlier that day. He thought he might have been too late as it was a popular restaurant, but luckily someone had just cancelled.
Urs and Stephanie were shown to their table and each given a menu. Urs had to admit, Stephanie did look attractive, wearing a long black dress with thin shoulder straps and a plunging V neck. Stephanie couldn’t take her eyes off Urs. He almost looked like a model when he wore a suit with his hair tied back in a ponytail; Urs was wearing a black suit, with a white shirt and black tie.
“You look nice.” Urs said, as he adjusted his tie.
“Thank you.” Stephanie replied. “So do you.”
Both of them felt a little awkward, trying to think of something to talk about. But it wasn’t long before their meals were served and they started to relax and found it easier to talk. That and the fact that Urs and Stephanie were already on their second bottle of wine.
“Did you realise that your cufflinks don’t match?” Stephanie asked, as she pointed to his wrist.
“Yes,” Urs replied, looking at his wrists. “I somehow managed to lose one of the cufflinks that Aimee bought me. But I wanted to wear the one I have so I had to wear an odd one.”
“Oh.” was all Stephanie could say. He still wanted to wear the cufflinks of his dead girlfriend. Was there any hope for her?
“Did you want some more wine?” Urs asked, as he topped up Stephanie‘s wine glass.
“Okay.” Stephanie replied, as Urs gestured to the waiter for another bottle of wine.
Urs was feeling a little tense, not quite sure what Stephanie was expecting from him. He didn’t want to spoil the evening and was desperately trying to relax. He hadn’t been worried about the date until now. He thought it would be fine, dinner with a friend. That’s how Urs has seen it. But now he had seen the way Stephanie was looking at him; the same way that he had probably been looking at Kristina over the dinner table.
The wine had helped them relax and enjoy the evening, talking about work, their careers, and family. Stephanie felt as if Urs was warming to her; but occasionally he would sit staring into space. They had soon finished their meal and Urs paid the bill and they left.
As they stepped outside Urs took hold of Stephanie’s hand and they crossed the road, to a taxi that was already waiting for them. Stephanie looked at their hands, wondering if Urs would stay with her tonight or if she was hoping for too much too soon. Little did she know that Urs wanted another woman on his arm; and the woman he wanted on his arm was the same woman he wanted in his bed. Her name was Kristina.
As Urs walked Stephanie into her apartment, he couldn’t stop thinking of Kristina. Urs helped Stephanie take off her coat and hung it up, still thinking of Kristina. Her blue eyes, her smile, the way her dress clung to her body. He wanted her; mind, body and soul.
“Did you want me to make some coffee?” Stephanie asked, turning to face Urs.
Urs looked at Stephanie. He didn’t speak as he put an arm around her waist and pulled her to him, kissing her forcefully. Stephanie was so taken aback that it was several seconds before she realised what was happening. She kissed him back hungrily, sliding her arms around his neck and pulling him closer.
A few seconds later, Urs unzipped her dress. It fell to the floor and she stepped out of it.
“Where’s the bedroom?” Urs asked.
“This way.” she replied, taking Urs by the hand and leading the way.
That night Urs made love to a woman he did not love and did not want; because his heart belonged to another. He loved her. He loved Kristina.
***** CHAPTER 17 *****
When Urs woke the next morning his head was pounding. He wasn’t much of a drinker so he couldn’t understand why he had drunk so much last night. Surely it wouldn’t have been that hard to stay sober and have an enjoyable evening with Stephanie. As his eyes adjusted to the sunlight shining through the gap in the curtains he looked at the woman sleeping beside him. What was he thinking of last night when he had taken her to bed? Stephanie was a friend. He should’ve gone straight home but when she had asked him if he wanted to come in, he had said yes without hesitation.
Urs carefully got out of bed, trying not to disturb Stephanie, and quietly made his way to the bathroom. Perhaps a shower would clear his head but it wouldn’t change what had happened between him and Stephanie. Urs wasn’t even sure he knew what he wanted to happen between them. They had a good relationship but there was a big difference between being friends and lovers. Yet they had now crossed that line and there was no going back. Urs stepped in to the shower, closed his eyes and pressed his palms against the wall, the warm water trickling down over his back. Again his thoughts turned to Kristina. It would still be night in New York, she would probably be fast asleep. But she would be with David, in his bed. Urs sighed to himself. Why was he falling for a woman who he had only ever seen once? He might never see her again but she was on his mind all the time. After being alone for so long he had found someone who he wanted to be with but she was with someone else. And to make things more complicated for himself he had started something with another woman. Urs didn’t know what was happening to him, his whole character was changing and he wasn’t sure he liked what he saw.
“Do you fancy sharing?” said a woman’s voice.
Urs turned to see Stephanie standing there with the shower door open. He had been deep in thought and hadn’t even heard her come in to the bathroom.
“It’s all yours.” Urs said as stepped out of the shower and grabbed a towel. “I really should get back to my place. I have a few things to sort out.”
“Oh, is it anything important or can it wait?” Stephanie asked, watching Urs as he dried himself off. “It’s just that we have a couple of days off and I thought we could some thing together.”
Urs wrapped the towel around his waist, he picked up a smaller towel and started to dry his hair.
“No, I really need to sort out some paperwork today.” Urs replied. “How about we do something tomorrow?”
“Okay.” Stephanie said, trying not to sound disappointed. She had just spent the night with the man she loved, she wasn’t going to start making demands for his attention.
“I’ll let you have your shower and I’ll say goodbye now.” Urs said as he quickly kissed Stephanie on the cheek. “I’m going to get dressed and go straight home. I need to make a start on things. I‘ll call you later, okay?”
Stephanie watched as Urs turned and left before stepping in to the shower. She started to think about the night she had just spent with Urs. If she was honest with herself she wasn’t expecting it to turn out the way it had. She had been hoping and praying that something would happen, and it did. But she just hoped that it wasn’t a one off, that it did actually mean something to Urs.
***********************************
As soon as Urs had left Stephanie’s apartment he got in to his car and took out his mobile. He flipped it open and started to dial.
“Hello?”
“Marius, it’s Urs.”
“Urs? What time is it?” Marius asked, sleepily.
Urs looked at his watch. “It’s just gone 7am.”
“7am? I didn’t know there was such a thing.” Marius mumbled. “I’ve only ever seen 7pm.”
Urs chuckled to himself. Marius was one of his best friends and had known him since childhood.
“Don’t you believe in ever having a lie in?” Marius asked.
“It’s a waste.” Urs replied. “You spend half your life in bed, you should get up early once in a while.”
“There’s early and then there’s ‘Urs early‘.“ Marius said. “You should try having a lie in, you might enjoy it. But come on, I know you never call this early unless something’s on your mind. So what‘s up?”
“I need to talk.” Urs said, running his fingers through his still damp hair. “Are you free later?”
“Sounds serious.” Marius replied. “But yeah I’m free. Want to meet up for lunch?”
“Sure.” Urs replied. “Do you think you can find your way out of bed for 1 o’clock?”
“I’ll give it a go.” Marius said, laughing. “I’ll see you at Tartine’s.”
******************************************************
Urs was sitting at a table outside Tartine’s, reading a newspaper. Tartine’s was a small café by the river which Marius had discovered when looking for some new scenery to paint; he was an artist. Ever since he had found it Urs and Marius came here regularly to eat. It was well hidden in the back streets of Paris and although it wasn’t that well known or easy to find they were always busy.
Urs looked up when someone tapped him on the shoulder. It was Marius.
“You made it then!” Urs said, as he glanced at his watch. “And you’re only five minutes late.”
“Hi, how are you? Yeah I’m fine thanks, good to see you too.” Marius said as he sat down.
“Sorry.” Urs said, folding up the newspaper, with a serious look on his face. “I ordered your usual for you.” Urs added, nodding at the pint of beer on the table.
“Geez you look like you’ve got the weight of the world on your shoulders.” Marius said, noticing the look on his face. “So are you going to tell me what’s wrong?”
“I think I’ve messed up big time.” Urs said, looking at Marius.
“Oh, come on then, spill.” Marius said, leaning back in his chair. He had no idea what Urs could have done that could be so bad, Urs wasn’t the type to make trouble. “It can’t be that bad can it?” Marius added, when Urs didn’t answer.
“I slept with Stephanie.” Urs said, as he took a sip of his beer, avoiding eye contact with Marius.
“You what?” Marius said, almost choking on his beer.
“You heard me?” Urs said, looking at Marius.
“I know what I thought I heard.” Marius said, putting his drink down. “But I can’t believe I heard right. You had sex with her?”
“There’s no need to act so surprised.” Urs said. “I am capable of getting a girlfriend, you know.”
“It’s not the fact that you have a girlfriend, if that’s what she is.” Marius said, shaking his head. “I just can’t believe you slept with her.”
“I know you have never liked her.” Urs said, defensively. “So just say it. Say what you really think.”
“I can’t explain it. There’s just something about her that I don’t like.” Marius replied. “I mean, she’s always acted polite and pleasant towards me but there’s just something fake about her. And heck, she must be at least 10 years older than you. Why don‘t you find yourself a nice young woman? You could do a lot better.”
Urs was silent. He had found himself a nice young woman, but she had found herself a nice young man, and it wasn’t him.
“What aren’t you telling me?” Marius asked, curiously seeing Urs deep in thought.
Urs sighed, as he leant back in his seat and ran his hands through his hair, clasping his hands together behind his head.
“I met someone at the weekend.” Urs replied. “A woman.”
“Who is she?” Marius asked. “Do I know her?”
“No, I don’t think so.” Urs replied. “Her name is Kristina Sanders. She’s in the music industry, some kind of agent.”
“So what’s she got to do with you and Stephanie?” Marius asked. “Don’t tell me you slept with her as well?” he added, laughing.
But Urs wasn’t laughing.
“You did, didn’t you!” Marius said, suddenly noticing the look on Urs’ face.
“No, of course not. What kind of person do you think I am?” Urs said, sharply. “I don’t go around sleeping with women just for the sake of it.”
“I’m sorry Urs.” Marius said apologetically. “But come on, it’s been a year since Aimee and now in the space of a few days you’ve met a woman and slept with Stephanie. It’s a bit sudden isn’t it?”
“Last night wasn’t exactly planned.” Urs said, looking out across the river. “I told Stephanie that I was ready to start dating again and we went out for dinner, but I wasn’t planning on sleeping with her. I came pretty close to cancelling the date all together.”
“So what on earth were you thinking?” Marius asked, leaning his elbows on the table. “If you were having second thoughts about the date, why go to bed with her?”
“I don’t know.” Urs replied, looking down at the floor. “I’m still trying to work that out.”
“Hang on a moment.” Marius said, looking puzzled. “What about this woman you mentioned. Kristina? Where does she come into it? What’s happened with her?”
“Nothing.” Urs said quietly.
“Urs? You said you needed to talk, so talk.” Marius said, resting his hand on Urs arm. “You know you can tell me anything. We’re friends, right?”
Urs nodded and gave a weak smile, before taking a deep breath.
“It was at the Tony Awards on Saturday in New York.” Urs started to say. “I had just taken my glasses off when someone bumped in to me and knocked them out of my hand.”
“Kristina?” Marius interrupted.
Urs nodded. “I wasn’t really paying attention to her, I was just looking to see where my glasses had landed. But then she picked up my glasses and handed them to me and that‘s when I saw her face.”
Urs smiled to himself as he thought of her, the way he had felt when she had looked up at him, the comment she had made about his eyes. She had seen right in to the very heart of him.
Marius saw the smile on Urs’ face. “And?”
“And I fell in love.” Urs murmured.
Marius looked at Urs with raised eyebrows.
“You fell in love?” Marius said, stunned. “Just like that, one look and you fell in love.”
Urs looked at Marius and nodded. “You should see her Marius. She’s beautiful; long blonde hair, stunning blue eyes and the most amazing smile. I found it so easy to talk to her. The way she made me feel, I‘ve never felt like that about anyone.”
“Not even Aimee?” Marius asked.
Urs didn’t answer. Marius didn’t ask again.
“So when are you seeing her next?” Marius asked.
“I don’t know.” Urs said. “She lives in New York.”
“So it would be a long distance relationship then?” Marius said.
“She has a boyfriend.” Urs replied.
“Oh great.” Marius said. “You sure make life interesting for yourself, don’t you!”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Urs snapped.
“You fall in love with a woman who has a boyfriend and she doesn’t even live in the same country and you sleep with your best friend.” Marius replied. “Come on Urs. You’ve got to sort yourself out. You can’t be in love with a woman that you’ve only just met! You’re confused, you don’t know what you want.”
“I’m not confused.” Urs said, getting annoyed. “I know what I want. I want Krissy. I love her. But I just don’t know what to do about it or how I’m even going to tell her.”
“You don’t say or do anything, Urs.” Marius said, firmly. “Even if you did see her again you can’t go around telling complete strangers you love them. Besides, she has a boyfriend. Do you really think she’s going to leave him for you?”
Urs got up from his seat. “I have to go.”
“Urs, you said you wanted to talk.” Marius said, getting to his feet. “I want to help you. We have to sort this out.”
“I’ve got things to do.” Urs replied.
“Urs, what are you going to do about Stephanie?” Marius asked. “If you think you’re in love with this other woman you can’t play around with Stephanie’s feelings.”
“I know.” Urs replied, putting his jacket on. “I’ll talk to her.”
“When?” Marius asked.
“Look I’ll tell her okay.” Urs snapped again. “I’ll call you.”
Marius sat back down in his seat and watched Urs walk away. He wished he could help his friend out of this mess, but only Urs could decide how he felt about Stephanie and Kristina and what to do next.
Urs left Marius sitting alone at the table. He felt guilty leaving him like that, but he didn’t want to listen to anymore of what he had to say. Urs knew he loved Kristina and he knew that he had to tell Stephanie last night was a mistake. Yet he had no idea of how to tell her and he had no idea of how to find Kristina. He had to tell her how he felt about her.
***** CHAPTER 18 *****
“Do you think we should get up?” Abigail asked, as she laid her head on Carlos’ chest. “It’s almost lunch time.”
Carlos looked across at the clock. “Let’s stay here for a little longer, then I’ll go and make us something to eat. Is there anything you wanted to do today?”
“I fancy trying out that pool.” Abigail replied. “I can’t remember the last time I went swimming.”
“Have you got a bathing suit?” Carlos asked.
“I don’t know.” she replied. “I just put everything I had in to a suitcase, I can‘t remember what I packed. But if not then I guess I could always improvise.”
“Or you could wear nothing at all.” Carlos said, wiggling his eyebrows.
Abigail didn’t say anything as she looked at Carlos, blushing.
“What?” Carlos asked innocently. “There’s nothing I have not seen before.”
“That may be true, but what if someone see’s me?” Abigail asked, not entirely convinced it was a good idea.
“There’s no one around here for miles.” Carlos replied. “That’s why I chose it. It’s nice and peaceful. I think secluded is the word the real estate agent used.”
“How about you go and make us some lunch and I’ll see if I have a bathing suit.” Abigail said getting out of bed. “Then I’ll think about what I’m going to wear, if anything.” she added, winking at him. Carlos got up and put a robe on, thinking to himself; please tell me she didn’t pack a bathing suit.
********************************
“Who was that on the phone?” David asked, as he walked in to the kitchen.
“It was Dr Slater’s surgery.” Kristina replied, looking toward David. “He’s got my test results back and wants to see me.”
“That was quick.” David said, sitting next to her. “When’s your appointment?”
“Four o’clock this afternoon.” she replied. “Why can’t he tell me over the phone? Why do I have to go there?”
“Because Dr Slater does things by the book, he probably wants to see you again, just make sure everything’s alright.” David said, kneeling in front of her. “He probably rushed the tests through so you wouldn’t be worrying.”
Kristina smiled weakly, but no matter how hard David tried to reassure her that everything was fine, she was still worrying.
“Come on.” David said, standing up and taking her hand. “Let’s go for a walk and get some fresh air.”
“But I have work to do.” Kristina replied. “I’m already running behind because of the Doctors yesterday and then there’s the appointment this afternoon.”
“Krissy, work can wait.” David said, leading her in to the hallway and handing her coat to her. “Half an hour won’t hurt.”
Kristina reluctantly put on her coat, and her and David left the apartment.
****************************************
Stephanie was sitting in her apartment, surfing through the TV channels but not really paying much attention to it. She had been thinking about what to say to Urs. She wanted to talk about what had happened last night but was scared what he might say. Perhaps he would blame the drink, or feel that the had rushed things and that it couldn’t happen again. She had been waiting for Urs to call her and so she had stayed in all day. But he hadn’t phoned and Stephanie didn’t want to start pestering him with phone calls so she had sat patiently and waited.
*****************************************
Kristina couldn’t believe it. She hadn’t been to the doctors in months, and now in the space of two days she had been there twice. She could feel her breathing getting faster and was starting to feel hot and flushed. Kristina really did hate the doctors and now she was starting to panic, worrying about what Doctor Slater would say. David could see Kristina was getting uncomfortable and tried to reassure her, but he knew that she wouldn’t be happy until she was outside.
Luckily for Kristina she didn’t have to wait long for Dr Slater to call her name.
“Do you want me to come with you this time?” David asked, getting up from his seat.
Kristina nodded and smiled. “Please. I’m scared.”
“Come on.” David said, taking her hand. “It’ll be fine, you’re worrying about nothing.”
****************************
Half an hour later David and Kristina said goodbye to Dr Slater and made their way out of the building.
“Are you ok?” David asked, quietly as he put an arm around her. “You haven’t said much.”
Kristina shook her head. “I think I need to sit down again.”
David took her hand and walked over to low wall outside the building. “It‘s probably shock, that‘s all.”
“Are you serious? I’m pregnant, David.” Kristina exclaimed. “How did that happen?”
“Well I could show you.” David said, smirking. “But we’d have to go somewhere more private.”
Kristina slapped him on the arm. “I think you’ve already shown me.” Kristina said, a faint smile appearing on her face. “That’s why we’re here now.”
“So are you happy?” he asked, putting his arm around her. “I realise it wasn’t planned, but you do want this baby, don’t you?”
Kristina looked up at David with a huge smile on her face. “I want this baby more than anything.”
*************************************
It was 9 o’clock in the evening in Paris and Urs was sitting down listening to music. He found it always helped him relax or get things straight in his head when something was on his mind. And Urs certainly had a lot on his mind at the moment.
He still hadn’t spoken to Stephanie since he had left her apartment earlier that morning. He didn’t know what to say to her.
Urs’ thoughts were interrupted when the doorbell went. Urs wasn’t going to bother answering as he wasn’t in the mood for company. But who ever it was, they were persistent and kept ringing the bell. Urs dragged himself up out of his seat and went to answer the door. As soon as he opened it Marius pushed his way past Urs, his arms loaded with pizza, drink and DVD’s.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Urs asked, closing the door behind him.
“Don’t you ever say hello to anyone these days?” Marius asked, unloading everything on to the table. “A hello, or how are you, might be nice once in awhile.”
“Hello, how are you?” Urs said. “Now tell me, what do you think you’re doing? What’s all this in aid of?”
Marius went to a cupboard and took out two glasses. “What does it look like? If the women can do it I don’t see why we can’t.”
“Do what?” Urs asked, totally confused by what Marius had just said. “And what women?”
“I’m talking about women in general, Urs.” Marius replied. “They have a girls night in, so we’re having a boys night in.”
“And why do we need a boys night in?” Urs asked, as he opened one of the pizza boxes.
Marius opened another of the pizza boxes and took a slice.
“Because you need it. You need to sort things out with Kristina and Stephanie once and for all. You can‘t sit here on your own trying to decide what to do. You need a voice of reason and we didn‘t get to finish our chat earlier.”
Urs sat down at the kitchen table. “I’m sorry about lunch but you were starting to annoy me.”
“That’s okay.” Marius said, sitting opposite him. “No one likes being told what to do or how they should feel. So have you thought anymore about what I said?”
“Which bit?” Urs asked, before biting in to a slice of pizza.
“The bit about not saying anything to Kristina.” Marius replied. “You can’t tell her how you feel and potentially ruin a perfectly good relationship between her and her boyfriend. If she has any feelings for you, which is highly unlikely, then she would finish with him. But until then just leave it alone.”
“Hang on, why is it ‘highly unlikely’ that she will have any feelings for me?” Urs asked, already not liking where this conversation was going. “I know I’m not exactly God’s gift to women, unlike you, but is it so inconceivable to think a woman might actually be interested in me?"
“I didn’t mean it like that and you know it.” Marius said, picking up the DVD’s. “You say you fell in love with her after just one look. But how long did it take you to realise that?”
Urs thought about it for a few minutes, while Marius has disappeared in to the front room with the DVD’s. Urs couldn’t pin point the moment when he knew he loved her, he just did. When he first saw her he couldn’t deny the fact that he was attracted to her. But he wouldn’t let himself feel anything else because he wanted to keep his promise to Aimee, to always be true. But as Urs found himself thinking about her more and more he couldn’t help but feel something for her.
“You’re still thinking then?” Marius asked, as he walked back in to the kitchen. “If it’s taking you this long to think about it, I would hardly call it love at first sight.”
“I don’t know when it was.” Urs replied. “I think I fell in love with her as soon as I saw her, but I just tried to deny it because of Aimee.”
“Can I ask you something?” Marius said, sitting down again. “Tell me if I’m overstepping the mark here.”
“Go on.” Urs said, leaning back in his chair.
“Why did you sleep with Stephanie? What I mean is…” Marius thought for a few seconds, getting the words straight in his head. “I mean, you say you like Stephanie, but you love Kristina. So was it for the sex? I know it‘s been a while. Or was it just out of loneliness? What?”
“You want the honest answer?” Urs said, looking down.
“Ever heard the saying honesty is the best policy.” Marius replied. “If not with me, then at least with yourself.”
“I’d been thinking about Kristina the whole time I was out with Stephanie.” Urs said in a low voice. “I know I can’t blame the drink for what I did. I knew exactly what I was doing.”
“And what was that?” Marius asked.
“I let my feelings for Kristina take over and that’s why I made love to Stephanie.” Urs replied. “I know it was wrong and believe me I feel terrible about it. But I couldn’t stop myself.”
“Have you spoken to Stephanie yet?” Marius asked. Urs shook his head. “What are you going to say to her?”
“I’ve absolutely no idea.” Urs replied, shrugging his shoulders. “What do I say to her? Sorry about last night, but it wasn’t really you I was making love to, I was thinking about another woman the whole time? Do you think we can try it again?”
“I’m not saying you tell her that.” Marius said, getting up from his seat. “But you do need to be honest with her. Come on, let's go watch these movies, I only rented them for the one night."
Urs picked up the pizza's and followed Marius in to the front room.
***********************
“Next time I‘m choosing the movies.” Urs said, as he picked up the remote control and switched the TV off. “Couldn‘t you get anything better than chick flicks?”
“I chose those films for a reason, Urs!” Marius replied, leaning forward in the chair. “But obviously it was a waste of time.”
“What are you talking about?” Urs asked, looking puzzled.
“The chick flicks, Sleepless in Seattle, You‘ve Got Mail, While You Were Sleeping.” Marius replied. “Don’t you get it? The whole love at first sight and happy endings is a myth. You don’t get that in real life. You only ever get a happy ending in chick flicks and fairytales. I don’t think you love Kristina, Urs. I think it’s just some kind of fascination that you have with her. You spent a few hours with her, you hardly know her. How can you call it love?”
Urs sat staring at the blank TV screen, thinking about what Marius had just said. He was sure it was love, but knew Marius would call him a fool. Urs was going to prove it to him, show him that it was love and that he and Kristina were meant to be.
***** CHAPTER 19 *****
Stephanie was in a good mood; she had just had a phone call from Urs. He wanted to come over and see her and then maybe go for lunch. Stephanie was sure that things would be fine between her and Urs. Admittedly they had rushed things but surely he wouldn’t have moved so fast if he didn’t feel something for her. Stephanie had decided to risk it and call David; even if it meant Urs and Kristina crossing paths again. She needed to let David know that she had managed to get him an audition for a part in one of the shows she was in. Stephanie had been on the phone the previous day to Luke, the producer who was a good friend of hers; he was willing to see David. Stephanie sat down at her desk and opened her diary, looking for David’s telephone number.
“Hello?”
“David, it’s Stephanie.”
“Hi Stephanie. How are you? How was the flight back to Paris?”
“I’m fine thanks, David.” Stephanie replied. “And the flight wasn’t too bad. I was just calling to let you know that if you’re still interested, you’ve got yourself an audition in the new show.”
“If I’m still interested?” David said, excitedly. “Absolutely! Just tell me when and where and I’ll be there!”
“Well I haven’t got all the details yet.” Stephanie replied. “I have to call Luke again and I’ll let you know.”
“Well let me give you Krissy’s work number, it’s probably easier to contact her.” David said. “And she’s more organised than me.”
“Okay, sure.” Stephanie replied, reluctantly. She hardly knew the woman but didn’t particularly want to speak to Kristina. She couldn’t help feeling some animosity towards her. Stephanie knew that Urs had found Kristina attractive but here was a tiny voice inside her head, also telling her that Kristina was attracted to Urs. She couldn’t explain it, but she felt there was some kind of connection between them when they had looked at each other.
“How is Kristina?” Stephanie asked, trying to make conversation.
“She’s fine, in fact, she’s more than fine.” David said, his huge smile evident down the phone. “I probably shouldn’t say anything just yet but yesterday we found out that Krissy’s pregnant.”
Any worries that Stephanie had about Urs and Kristina instantly disappeared as soon as she realised what David had just said. “That’s brilliant news, David. Congratulations, I’m really happy for you both. Give my best wishes to Kristina for me.”
“Thanks Stephanie.” David replied. “I’ll be sure to tell her.”
“Okay, well I should be going.” Stephanie said, checking her watch. Urs was due to arrive at any minute. “I’ll call as soon as I have more details.”
Stephanie and David said goodbye and no sooner had Stephanie put the phone down than there was a knock at the door. It was Urs.
“I’ve just been speaking to David.” Stephanie said, closing the door after him.
“David?” Urs asked.
“From the Tony Awards at the weekend.” Stephanie replied. “Remember I was going to see about getting him an audition for the show?”
“Oh yes.” Urs replied. “I know who you mean. So, did you?”
“Yes.” Stephanie said as she put her coat on. “He sounded pretty excited. That’s the second piece of good news he’s had this week.”
“Oh? What was the first?” Urs asked, trying to sound interested. As much as he liked David, he really wasn’t interested in what was happening in his life.
“He found out yesterday that he’s going to be a dad.” Stephanie replied, casually glancing at Urs to see his reaction. “Kristina is pregnant.”
There was no reaction from Urs, his face expressionless.
“I just need to get my mobile.” Stephanie said, after searching through her bag. “I think I’ve left it in my room.”
As Stephanie disappeared in to her room, Urs walked over to the window; hands in his pockets and his eyes glazed over. This was last thing he had expected to hear, Kristina being pregnant. How could he ever tell her loved her? He couldn‘t. David and Kristina might not be married, but a baby put a whole different light on the situation. There was no way he could tell her how he felt about her, not now.
“Are you okay?”
Urs turned to see Stephanie. He nodded. “I’m fine.”
Stephanie wasn’t convinced. “Are you having regrets about the other night?” she asked, warily.
Urs walked away from the window and sat down. This was the moment he had been dreading. Urs knew he had to talk to Stephanie about the night they spent together. He didn’t want to ruin their friendship but he had to get things straight between them.
“No regrets.” Urs lied. “But maybe I took things a little too fast. I know it was all my doing so please, don‘t think it‘s your fault.”
Stephanie sat down next to Urs. “So what does that mean? For us I mean.”
Urs hesitated. He didn’t know what to tell her or say to her without hurting her.
“I don’t think it can happen again, Stephanie.” Urs replied, looking at her. “I’m sorry.”
“But it was only one date, Urs.” Stephanie said, quietly. “We can take things as slow as you like. I’m not going to rush you.”
He could lie and carry on from where they left off the other night, but Urs would only be doing it to stop from hurting her now. Urs would only be making things worse; he shook his head.
“I’m sorry, Stephanie.” Urs said, taking her hand in his. “I’m just not ready.”
Stephanie smiled, but Urs noticed tears in her eyes. He didn’t know what to say. He doubted if things would ever be the same between them again.
“Do you mind if we cancel lunch?” Stephanie asked, discreetly wiping her eyes.
“Of course not.” Urs replied. “I’m really sorry Stephanie.”
“Don’t worry about it.” Stephanie said, standing up. “Thank you for being honest with me.”
Urs kissed Stephanie goodbye and headed back to his apartment. He felt awful. He could only guess at how she might be feeling right now, although he had some idea. They were both in love with someone who was never likely to feel the same way in return.
******************************************************
Kristina was still getting used to the fact that she was pregnant. She was going to be a mother and David was going to be a father. It just didn’t seem possible. She was convinced she wasn’t pregnant so when they had seen Doctor Slater yesterday and he had confirmed she was pregnant, she was stunned. Kristina had asked him if he was sure as she was still having regular periods. But Doctor Slater had told it her although it was rare for that to happen while pregnant, it wasn’t unheard of.
Earlier that morning David had insisted they go straight to the shopping mall and buy things for the baby. But Kristina had thought maybe it was too soon; she didn’t want to tempt fate. Yet David had got his way and they now had baby grows in all sizes, in all colours and a huge 6ft bear that David had made a bee-line for as soon as they entered the store.
Kristina had just sat down at her desk when the phone rang.
“Are you going to get that or shall I?” David shouted from the other room.
“I will.” Kristina replied, just before picking up the phone.
Several minutes later, David walked in to the office just as Kristina was putting the phone down. “Who was it?” he asked.
“Dr Slater.” she replied quietly. “He’s asked if we can go back and see him.”
“When?” David asked, walking towards her. “And what for?”
“He didn’t say.” Kristina said, looking at David. “But he said he needs to speak with us as soon as possible, so as soon as we‘re ready just drop by and he‘ll see us. Something‘s wrong with the baby, isn‘t it.”
“Krissy, why do you always assume the worst?” David asked, kneeling in front of her.
“What else could it be?” she asked.
David thought about it for a moment; Kristina was right. If it was good news surely it could wait until tomorrow. But if it was bad news, maybe that’s why he needed to see them so urgently. David tried to sound optimistic, not wanting to worry Kristina more than she already was.
“Don’t think like that, Krissy.” David said, resting his hands on her knees. “Look what happened last time you thought it was bad news. You found out you were 10 weeks pregnant! Who knows, maybe he’s going to tell us we’re having twins.”
“You mean I would have to put up with three kids in the house?” Kristina said jokingly, feeling happier as she thought about the baby. “Besides, I think it‘s a bit soon to tell if it’s twins or not, David.”
“Just a thought.” David said, standing up. “So did you want you want to go and see him now? Find out what he has to say.”
Kristina nodded. “Let’s go and get this over and done with.”
Kristina and David made their way downstairs to the car in silence. Both of them were worried about what Doctor Slater needed to see them about. David was aware of Kristina’s concerns, but Kristina wasn’t aware that David was also worried, more than he let on.
Doctor Slater was true to his word. As soon David and Kristina had arrived, the receptionist had told him they were waiting and were shown into his office straight away.
“Kristina, David, I’m sorry to have to ask you here again so soon.” Doctor Slater said, shaking their hands. “Please, take a seat.”
An anxious Kristina and David sat down; neither of them prepared for the news that awaited them.
***** CHAPTER 20 *****
“This isn’t real.” Kristina quietly cried, shaking her head. “This can’t be happening.”
David quickly got up from his seat, and put his arms around Kristina. “Shhhh, it will be okay. We’ll get through this, you’ll see.”
“How? Tell me how.” Kristina asked, as David tried to comfort her.
David looked at Dr Slater, tears in his eyes; unsure of what to say to Kristina.
“Kristina, David’s right.” Dr Slater said, getting up from his seat and kneeling beside her. “I know this is a lot to take in right now, but there are things that can be done.”
“But why me?” she asked, looking at Dr Slater, tears running down her face.
Dr Slater took her hand in his. “I know it might seem unfair Kristina, but we don’t always know why. There could be a number of reasons. Until we do more tests we won’t know for sure.”
Kristina couldn’t take it all in. Three days ago it was just her and David. Two days ago it was her, David and a baby. But today, today was the worst day of her life and things were only going to get worse.
Kristina looked at David. “I want to go home.”
David then looked at Dr Slater again; he nodded. “We need to talk about your options, but it can wait until tomorrow. I‘ll call you.”
David stood up and helped Kristina to her feet. “Come on Krissy.” he whispered. “I’m not going anywhere. I’m going to be here every step of the way.”
Dr Slater watched as the young couple left his office. He hoped that David meant every word he said, because the next few months were going to be some of the toughest they had ever known.
************
“Krissy?”
“Huh? What?” Kristina asked, looking up from her desk. She had been trying to keep busy but she was finding it hard to concentrate.
“I said you should rest.” David said, kneeling down beside her. “You know what Dr Slater said.”
“I can’t, not yet.” Kristina said, looking back down at her desk. “I’ve got to get this paperwork completed. It needs to be in the post today and then I’ve got to pack.”
“Pack?” David said, sounding shocked. “What for?”
“I have to go to Paris, remember?” Kristina replied. “I’ve got to meet a new client.”
“But I thought you were going to cancel all your meetings.” David said, standing up. “You’re not going to be able to work soon. Do you think it’s wise to take on more clients?”
“Until we know what we’re dealing with I can’t let this stop me David.” Kristina replied, shaking her head.
“We know what we‘re dealing with Krissy.” David said quietly. “You can’t ignore it.”
“I’m not ignoring it.” Kristina snapped. “I just don’t see what good it will do talking about it. It won’t make me better!”
“I want you to call Dr Slater before you go.” David said, sitting down opposite her. “He might tell you it’s not a good idea.”
“Please don’t do this David.” Kristina said quietly. “I‘m dealing with this my way, okay?”
“But I’m going to be worried about you.” David said, putting his hand out to Kristina. “Please don‘t go.”
Kristina took his hand. “You’re worrying about nothing, David. I‘ll be fine.”
*****************************************************
Kristina had phoned Dr Slater, after David had insisted that she call him before going to Paris. He didn’t want her to go to, but once Kristina had set her mind on something there was no changing it. Dr Slater had asked them both to come and see him again before she left; they hadn’t long been back from seeing Dr Slater. He wasn’t too happy her with her travelling but he couldn’t talk her out of it. He had made another appointment for her to have more tests in two days time.
Kristina had been sitting looking at the phone for the last twenty minutes. She had to phone her sister and tell her, but she didn’t know where to start.
“Do you want me to do it?” David asked, when he noticed Kristina had been staring at the phone.
Kristina shook her head. “No. I’ll do it.” she said quietly, as she picked up the phone and dialled Abigail’s number.
When Abigail had answered the phone Kristina was surprised at the change in her sisters voice. She had only been in Spain a few days but it was obvious she was happy with Carlos; and now Kristina had to tell her the news.
“What’s up sis?” Abigail said, in a cheerful voice.
“Abigail, I have something to tell you.” Kristina replied.
“Oh my God you’re pregnant aren’t you!” Abigail said excitedly.
“What makes you think that?” Kristina asked, stunned that her sister would think that.
“I don’t know.” Abigail replied. “I guess it just seemed like the obvious thing. So you’re not pregnant then?”
“No.” Kristina said quietly. “No, I thought I was but… but I’m not pregnant. I didn’t tell you but I went to the doctors about some bad headaches. Somehow the lab got my test results mixed up. So they told me I was pregnant but then yesterday…” Kristina paused as she took a deep breath, forcing herself not to cry.
“Kristina?” Abigail said, anxiously. “What’s wrong? You’re starting to worry me.”
“I’m ill, Abigail.” Kristina replied.
There was several seconds of silence before Abigail asked “How ill?”
“I have something wrong with my kidneys.” Kristina replied, her voice starting to waver. “I’ve got to go for more tests in a couple of days.”
Abigail was beginning to wish she had gone back to New York; she needed to be there for her sister.
“This is serious isn’t it?” Abigail said in a low voice.
“Yes.” Kristina replied, catching her breath. “I can go on dialysis but it depends on how far the disease is gone. If Dr Slater is right, I’ll need to go on a waiting list for a transplant and just hope that I can find a donor in time. That’s why I need to ask you something, Abigail.”
“You can ask me anything.” Abigail replied.
“Will you come to New York and be tested to see if you can be a match for a kidney donor?” Kristina said quickly.
Abigail didn’t hesitate in answering. “You’re my sister, Kristina. Do you really need to ask me? Of course I’ll come. When do you need me there?”
“Friday.” Kristina replied. “Will that be a problem?”
“Don’t you worry about that, I’ll be there.” Abigail said tearfully.
The two sisters said goodbye. Carlos put his arms around Abigail as she put the phone down.
“What’s wrong Abby?” he asked as she turned around to face him. “You’re crying.” he said, taking a handkerchief out of his pocket and carefully wiping her tears away.
“It’s Kristina.” Abigail replied. “She’s sick. I need to go to New York. We have to be there on Friday.”
“What’s wrong with her?” Carlos asked, distressed at seeing Abigail so upset.
“Something to do with her kidneys, I don’t know all the details.” Abigail replied. “But I need to see if I can be a donor for her.”
Carlos wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close to him. “I’ll call the airport and make all the arrangements. Are you sure you want to do this?”
“Of course, she’s my sister.” Abigail said looking up at Carlos. “I know she would do it for me.”
Abigail rested her head against his chest, and closed her eyes. She wished she could leave for New York right now, Friday seemed so far away.
***** CHAPTER 21 *****
Kristina was finishing the last of her paperwork before she left for Paris that afternoon. David had tried to talk her out of it, but she had refused to listen. The doctors appointment wasn‘t for another two days so she was going to carry on as normal. David had said she was trying to ignore it, deny there was anything wrong. Kristina explained that she‘d gone on this long not knowing what was wrong with her so why would a couple more days make any difference. David had given up trying to talk sense in to her and gone out for a walk.
Kristina was looking for Stephanie’s phone number, she wanted to get all the details of the new show and sort everything out for David. She did want him having to worry about any thing. She smiled to herself, knowing how disorganised he was. She didn’t mean to worry him but she had to go to Paris, maybe a change of scenery would help her get things straight in her head. To be honest she was looking forward to some time to herself. Kristina found Stephanie’s number and started to dial.
***************************************************
Urs was in Stephanie’s apartment. Things were a little odd between them but they had still managed to work together and remain friends after yesterdays conversation. Stephanie had invited Urs back for lunch and Urs felt obliged to accept. Stephanie then realised she had hardly anything in the fridge and so she had quickly gone to a small store at the end of the road. She had only been gone ten minutes when a mobile started to ring. Urs had been sitting down reading a newspaper at the time. He looked at his mobile thinking it was his, but he soon realised it was Stephanie’s. He could see it flashing on the desk but didn’t know if he should answer it. Urs got up and walked across to the desk, he looked at the caller id on the screen; Kristina Sanders.
Urs’ heart skipped a beat the moment he saw her name. Before he realised what he had done he had picked up the phone and answered it.
“Hello.”
“Oh, I’m sorry I think I’ve got the wrong number.” Kristina said, hearing a man’s voice.
“Did you want Stephanie?” asked the man.
“Yes.” Kristina replied. “Is she there?”
“She’s just popped out for a moment. Can I take a message?” he asked.
“It’s about work, I’m calling about an audition that she’s arranged for a David Miller.”
“Okay, who shall I say called?” asked the male voice.
“Kristina.” she replied. “Kristina Sanders.”
“Krissy?” the mans’ voice said, curiously. Urs tried to sound surprised. Obviously he knew it was her all along, but he didn’t want Kristina to know.
“I’m sorry?” Kristina said. “Do I know you?” Kristina was a little wary as to who this man was. The only person that called her Krissy was David.
“You’ve forgotten me already?” he replied. “It’s Urs.”
Kristina felt butterflies in her tummy. How could she not recognise his voice, it was so obvious that it was him.
“Urs! How are you?” Kristina asked.
“I’m doing very well thank you.” Urs replied. “I’m sorry we didn’t get to say goodbye on Saturday but Stephanie was tired and I wanted to go back to the hotel. It was all a bit sudden.
“That’s alright, Urs you don’t have to apologise. But I think I have something of yours.” Kristina said, sounding a little embarrassed. “Have you lost a cufflink? I found it on the floor close to where you were sitting on Saturday night. I was going to phone the venue and tell them but I’ve been so busy.”
“You have? You don’t know how relieved I am to hear you say that.” Urs said, ecstatically. “I thought I’d lost it for good. It was a present from my girlfriend.”
“Did you want me to post it you?” Kristina asked.
“No, no don’t do that.” Urs said quickly. “Would it be alright if you held on to it for the moment? Now that I‘ve found it I don’t really want to lose it in the post.”
“Well actually, I’m flying to Paris this afternoon to meet a client.” Kristina said. “So I could always meet you somewhere.”
Urs couldn’t believe his ears, Kristina was going to be in Paris; today. He could see her again in just a few hours, but what was he thinking, she was pregnant. Everything had changed since yesterday. He didn’t care, he needed to see her again.
“Urs? Are you still there?”
“I’m sorry Krissy.” Urs said. “I was just thinking. If you’re flying out this afternoon, you won’t arrive until this evening so I assume your meeting is sometime tomorrow?”
“Yes it is." Kristina replied.
“Well how about I meet you at the airport?” Urs asked. “I could always drop you off at your hotel. Or even better why don’t you come and stay with me?”
“Thank you Urs, but I couldn’t do that.” Kristina replied. “I wouldn‘t want to impose on you.” Kristina felt a little nervous at the thought of staying over night with Urs. It wasn‘t that she didn‘t know him very well, or didn‘t trust him; strangely enough she trusted him completely. But after the effect he had on her at the weekend she didn‘t want to get in to that embarrassing situation again.
“Don’t be silly.” Urs said. “I wouldn’t have offered if I didn’t mean it. So how about it? Let me know your flight number and I‘ll meet you at the airport. You can stay overnight, it seems pointless in you having to pay for a hotel. And I can‘t let a pregnant woman traipse all around Paris. By the way, congratulations!”
Kristina was jolted back to reality as soon as Urs mentioned her now non-existent pregnancy. In those few minutes she had forgotten about the test results and her illness.
“Krissy?”
“Sorry Urs.” Kristina replied. “I was miles away. But how did you know I was pregnant?”
“Stephanie called David about the audition and he told her.” Urs replied. “So, is it all arranged? I’ll collect you from the airport, you’ll stay with me tonight and you can cancel your hotel reservation.”
“As long as you’re sure.” Kristina replied.
“Absolutely.” Urs said with a smile on his face. “It will be great to see you again.”
“And you too.” Kristina replied. It was true, for some reason she was looking forward to seeing him again.
As soon as Urs had got Kristina’s flight details they said goodbye. Urs then put Stephanie’s mobile back on the table and took out his own mobile.
“Marius.”
“Urs.”
“What are you doing later on?” Urs asked.
“Nothing, why?” Marius replied.
“She’s coming here, she’s coming to Paris. I’m picking her up at the airport later on, her flight gets in at 6 o’clock. You’ve got to come with me, I want you to meet her.”
“Urs slow down.” Marius interrupted. “Who are you talking about?”
“Krissy. She’s coming to Paris.” Urs said, excitedly. “She’ll be here in a few hours. I want you to meet her.”
“Why’s she coming to Paris?” Marius asked. “And how did you find her?”
“She called Stephanie’s mobile about some audition for a show and I answered it. And she has my lost cufflink that I told you about.” Urs replied. “But that’s not important, will you come with me to the airport?”
“Is she coming alone or will she be with her boyfriend?” Marius asked, worried about what Urs was getting himself into.
Urs hadn’t even thought about that, but when he had asked Kristina to stay she hadn’t mentioned David. “Alone. I think.” Urs replied. “But don’t worry I‘m not going to do anything stupid. She and David are expecting a baby, I wouldn’t dream of messing things up.”
“I’m glad to hear it.” Marius said, sighing. “But are you sure this is a good idea?”
“What do you mean?” Urs asked.
“Urs, I don’t see how meeting her again is going to help things.” Marius replied.
“Just say you’ll come to the airport with me.” Urs said. “Then you‘ll see.”
“See what?” Marius asked, sounding puzzled.
“You’ll see what I see and why I feel the way I do.” Urs replied.
“Urs, we talked about this the other night.” Marius said, who was beginning to sound annoyed with his friend. “You don’t love her. You just think you do.”
“I know what I’m doing Marius.” Urs said firmly. “Will you come with me or not?”
Marius still wasn‘t convinced this was a good idea, but if Urs insisted on seeing Kristina again, he wanted to be there to make sure Urs didn‘t make a fool of himself.
“Okay, what time?”
***** CHAPTER 22 *****
Just as Urs put his mobile away, Stephanie opened the door and walked back in to the apartment.
“Sorry I took so long.” Stephanie said as she closed the door. “But I got talking to someone.”
“That’s alright.” Urs said, following Stephanie in to the kitchen. “I hope it was okay but your mobile was ringing and I answered it.”
“Who was it?” Stephanie said, as she started to unpack the shopping.
“Kristina.” Urs said casually.
Stephanie stopped what she was doing for a second. “How is she? How‘s the pregnancy treating her?”
“She seems fine.” Urs replied, smiling. “She was asking about some details for an audition for David.”
Stephanie continued to unpack. Stephanie couldn’t help but ask about the pregnancy. Urs had told her he wasn’t ready for a relationship but she knew Urs liked Kristina; it was the only way she knew of getting back at him. But it didn’t seem to bother him.
“I’ll give her a call back after we’ve eaten.” Stephanie replied. “Do you think you could set the table for me? Lunch won’t be long.”
Stephanie watched as Urs left the kitchen. Stephanie’s feeling of jealousy and animosity towards Kristina was starting to show itself again. Stephanie knew she was jealous of Kristina, she wasn’t denying it, but at the moment she was more angry with Urs for answering her mobile. There was no reason for him to answer it, he could have just let it ring. But she guessed Urs had seen Kristina’s name on the display and that’s why he had answered it. Stephanie tried to forget about it as she started on lunch.
*******************************************************
Kristina’s plane had landed safely at Charles de Gaulle Airport and she had just passed through customs. As she walked through the double doors, her eyes scanned the crowd looking for Urs. Kristina had been looking forward to seeing him again. She couldn’t explain how she felt about him, there was just something about his presence that made her feel alive. Kristina surprised herself when she had suggested meeting Urs; she was even more surprised when she had agreed to stay with him. Kristina had told David about Urs’ offer and he seemed fine with the idea, happy that she would be with someone should anything happen.
Urs couldn’t wait to see Kristina. He knew she was still with David but he was just looking forward to seeing her again; seeing her smile, hearing her voice, her laugh and just to be near her. He checked his watch once again and looked up at the arrivals board. Kristina’s plane had landed on time. Marius and Urs made their way to the arrivals lounge. Urs kept checking his watch, time seemed to pass so slowly. Urs stood waiting for what seemed like an eternity, his eyes darting back and forth over the people passing him by. He didn’t want to miss her, but the passengers seemed to be getting less and less. Urs was beginning to think she wasn’t coming, but then he saw her. She looked just how he remembered; beautiful.
Kristina spotted Urs in the crowd. He put his hand up to acknowledge her and smiled. He gestured for her to make her way to the end of the aisle. Both of them unknowingly started to walk a little faster, eager to see each other. As the two of them got to the end of the aisle and the crowd thinned out, they finally came face to face.
As Kristina looked in to Urs’ eyes, she felt that deep connection again; she knew he felt it too and it was unnerving. She could feel the butterflies in her stomach and was beginning to think that maybe meeting Urs wasn’t one of her best ideas.
Urs stood looking at Kristina and he couldn’t take his eyes off her. It was just like the night they first met, her eyes seeing right in to the heart of him. He was sure she could feel it, there was something between them.
Marius could see why Urs was attracted to Kristina. She was tall, slim, and had deep blue eyes and long blonde hair which was pulled back in a ponytail, with a few loose strands framing her face. Marius had to agree with Urs, she did look amazing but he couldn’t understand why Urs was so intent on being with her when he hardly knew her. Marius had stood in silence watching Kristina and Urs. They still hadn’t spoken a single word to each other. They simply stood there, smiling at one another. Marius had been waiting for Urs to introduce him but the two seemed oblivious to him.
“Are you going to introduce us?” Marius asked, placing a hand on Urs’ shoulder.
“I’m sorry.” Urs said, turning to face him, suddenly remembering Marius was there. “Krissy I’d like you to meet a great friend of mine, Marius Ackerman. Marius, this is Krissy Sanders.” Urs said, as he turned back to face Kristina, smiling at her.
“It’s nice to meet you Marius.” Kristina said, holding her hand out to him. Urs stood watching Kristina. He felt happy, almost proud to be seen with her, to know her.
“It’s nice to meet you too.” Marius replied, taking her hand and leaning in to kiss her on the cheek. “I guess you must be tired from travelling.” he said, looking at Urs who was still watching Kristina.
“A little bit.” Kristina replied. “But nothing a goods nights sleep won’t cure.”
“It really is good to see you again.” Urs said, as he too leaned in and kissed Kristina on the cheek. “And I mean that.” he added with a whisper.
Kristina could feel herself blushing. “It’s good to see you too, Urs.”
“Here let me take those.” Urs said, taking her bag and suitcase from her. “You shouldn’t be carrying them in your condition. David must be pleased about being a father.”
“Yes, yes he is.” Kristina said frowning, as she followed Urs out to the car park. Urs didn’t notice the look on Kristina’s face, but Marius did.
“So what hotel are you staying at?” Marius asked, as they walked to the car. “Is it nearby?”
Kristina looked at Urs, uncertain of what to say. She was sure that if Marius was such a great friend that he would have mentioned she was staying with him.
Urs turned around and looked at Kristina, noticing the look on her face, he answered for her. “I suggested that Kristina stay with me, given her condition.”
Marius opened the car door for Kristina and waited for her to get in before he went to the back of the car where Urs was putting Kristina’s belongings in the boot.
“Are you out of your mind?” Marius hissed at him. “What were you thinking of, inviting her to stay with you?”
Urs stopped what he was doing and looked at Marius. “I’ve told you before, I know what I’m doing.”
“Just like you knew what you were doing with Stephanie.” Marius asked angrily. “You didn’t even love her but that didn’t stop you from sleeping with her. You think this is going to be any different?”
“Nothing is going to happen.” Urs replied through gritted teeth. “She’s with David, she’s pregnant, she’s staying for one night and that’s it. Tomorrow she goes home.”
“And then what?” Marius asked. “She goes back to New York and you’ll never see her again. You‘ll be quite happy with that?”
Urs didn’t answer, he put Kristina’s bag in to the boot before closing it.
“I take it you haven’t told Stephanie that Kristina is staying with you tonight.” Marius asked.
“No, it doesn’t concern her.” Urs replied. “There’s no reason why I should mention it, besides I didn’t want to make things even worse between us.”
“That’s because you know what you’re doing is wrong, Urs.” Marius said.
“Explain how letting her stay over for one night is wrong?” Urs asked, now getting annoyed at having to justify his actions. “She’s just a friend.”
“A friend maybe, but I know you want more than that from her Urs and you’re making trouble for yourself.” Marius said, grabbing hold of Urs‘ arm. “You don’t need any more complications in your life right now, you’ve only just sorted out the whole mess with Stephanie. I don‘t want you doing anything stupid.”
“I love her, Marius.” Urs said quietly. “I’m not going to do anything to ruin what she has with David. But if I find out she feels same the way, you can’t stop me.”
“You’re not listening again.” Marius said, still hanging on to Urs’ arm as he turned to walk to the front of the car. “You can’t tell her you love her. If she has any feelings for you whatsoever don’t you think you would know by now?”
“You saw it.” Urs said, looking at Marius as he shook his arm loose from his grip. “You didn’t say anything but I know you saw it.”
“Saw what?” Marius asked, stepping back from Urs.
“The way she looked at me.” Urs replied. “Go on deny it. You might not think it’s love but there was definitely something there in her eyes.”
Marius stared at Urs. He had seen the way Kristina reacted to Urs but he wasn’t going to tell him; he didn’t want to encourage him.
“Let’s go.” Marius said turning away and ignoring Urs’ comment.
Urs walked round to the drivers side, smiling to himself. Urs was right, Marius couldn't deny that there was something happening between him and Kristina.
